Wherein a Greensboro reporter gets his ass kicked by — well, you know. (h/t BlueNC)
Mother Jones features a video of John McCain during a 2008 primary debate criticizing Rudy Giuliani’s shortcomings in foreign policy for being a “mayor for a short period time” and likewise, Mitt Romney for being a governor “for a short period of time.”
Yet months later, he chose Sarah Palin, whose tenure as Alaska guv is a shade under two years, and mayor of Wasilla (pop. 5,489 in 2000), six years. Not exactly a lifetime. But apparently, being Wasilla mayor outranks being the chief of NYC (pop. 8 million) and the top dog in Massachusetts, where Romney served as governor twice as long as Palin has in Alaska.
Indy columnist Steven Petrow has written a poignant and compelling piece today about corresponding with Joe Biden back in ‘72 after Biden’s wife and daughter were killed in an accident. The article also lauds Biden’s character as a contrast to the lies and innuendo spread by the McCain/ Palin campaign:
“So while McCain and Palin do their best to undermine the Democrats’ trustworthiness and character, let us praise the family man from Delaware who could—and should—be our next vice president.”
An op-ed in today’s New York Times delivers a stark assessment of John McCain and Sarah Palin’s strategy of instilling fear of Barack Obama, whom McCain referred to as “that one” (click through for video) during last night’s debate and whom Palin has insisted “palls around with terrorists” and does not “see America as you see it.”
They have gone far beyond the usual fare of quotes taken out of context and distortions of an opponent’s record — into the dark territory of race-baiting and xenophobia. Senator Barack Obama has taken some cheap shots at Mr. McCain, but there is no comparison.
The debate was a failed opportunity for McCain, who at times resorted to snide remarks (click through for video) and often relied on factually incorrect claims. While Obama made a concerted effort to answer questions clearly, the Times notes that McCain “offered no real answers for how he plans to solve the country’s deep economic crisis.”
Does anyone else get the feeling that he was but a breath from saying “smite,” but then thought better of it?
Do Obama-Biden and McCain-Palin really hold the same positions on gay marriage and civil rights?
That ought to throw James Dobson and the rest of the religious right into conniptions, writes Pam Spaulding.
She didn’t stumble, he didn’t big-foot her. Is that about it? My comment when it ended last night is here.
