Plans to add North Carolina’s capital city to the national day of protest of California’s Proposition 8 are still underway.
Organizer Will Elliott said he’s trying to find a downtown location and secure the proper permits. One thing we know so far: The state capitol is out because construction begins there this weekend.
Meanwhile, confirmed speakers include:
Unfortunately, the date coincides with the already scheduled Equality North Carolina Conference, which could hurt attendance. “We wish we could be at two places at once,” Elliott said on the event’s Facebook page, “but feel that taking part in this national day of protest is also important.”
Updates to come. Meanwhile, you can get in touch with Elliott at NCAgainstH8 [at] gmail [dot] com.
Update (11/11 10:20 a.m.): Capitol permits could not be secured, organizer Will Elliott said Tuesday morning. He’s working on finding an alternate downtown Raleigh location. For questions, or to help, email NCAgainstH8 [at] gmail [dot] com.
Across the country, simultaneous protests are being planned against California’s Proposition 8, which amends the state’s constitution to deny gay and lesbian people the right to marry, and against other anti-gay initiatives that passed last Tuesday. (See JointheImpact.com for a full list.)
Triangle organizers are now trying to secure permits to host a rally at the state capitol. All protests will take place at 1:30 EDT / 10:30 PDT. Updates to come.
Wake up call: While an Obama victory signals a new day in America, it’s the same old hate and backlash against the LGBT community as initiatives passed in several states that discriminate against gays and lesbians in devastating ways.
Pam’s House Blend has an excellent analysis of the anti-LGBT initiatives.
Elizabeth Dole’s down in the polls. Quick, what can the Republicans do to distract North Carolinians who are losing their jobs left and right?
The North Carolina Republican State Executive Committee’s answer: Bash the gays!

The group sent out these mailers, linking Democratic challenger Kay Hagan to a “radical homosexual agenda” because she opposes an amendment to the state’s constitution that would deny gay people the right to marry, PageOneQ reports.
Pam Spaulding says the GOP is giving Hagan too much credit: “I laughed at this because as you might recall, I was dissed by the Hagan campaign for simply asking how she’d vote on pending legislation re: LGBT issues.”
Next: Rumors will surface that Fannie and Freddie are gay, and they blew all that money on their San Francisco weddings.
Do Obama-Biden and McCain-Palin really hold the same positions on gay marriage and civil rights?
That ought to throw James Dobson and the rest of the religious right into conniptions, writes Pam Spaulding.
North Carolina law doesn’t allow gays and lesbians to marry, but it will take their money. Largely progressive Orange County is planning a major marketing push to attract gay and lesbian tourists, according to WRAL.com.
Raleigh officials, eyeing gays and lesbians as a way to fill the convention center calendar, are also marketing to the LGBT community, whereas Durham is “taking a more subtle approach”:
“(We) represent Durham as it is, which is a destination that is very accepting, very engaging,” said Shelly Green, chief operating officer of the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Not exactly the Welcome Wagon, progressive Durham. Say it like you mean it.
