Lawson, Roche to face off in 4th District Republican primary

Lisa Sorg · 11 Feb 2010, 11:11 AM · 7 Comments

lawson-colorB.J. Lawson, who, in 2008 ran a spirited, but unsuccessful campaign against Democratic incumbent David Price for the 4th congressional district, has announced he will again try to win the seat. Lawson lost to Price by a 2-1 margin in that election.
But first, Lawson, a doctor and software developer, will face former international banker Frank Roche of Apex in the Republican primary.
Lawson combines progressive stances with Libertarianism. On one hand, his principles echo the free-market right: the elimination of federal income tax and “onerous” regulations, and the establishment of health care savings accounts instead of universal health insurance. He does not support Roe v. Wade.
Yet, at times, Lawson sounds like a progressive, opposing the war in Iraq—and the war on drugs—the death penalty and a constitutional amendment on same-sex marriage.
The Indy covered the Price-Lawson race in 2008.

Roche’s issue statements come out of the left field of the far right. He is skeptical about human impacts on global warming. On illegal immigration, he promises to eliminate it as much as possible, and would “push aside advocates of multiculturalism, identity politics, and political correctness.”
On hate crimes legislation, he says, “I do not support efforts to establish laws based on thoughts. America has more than enough laws to protect us all and to bring justice to those who do harm us.”
You get the picture.

B.J. Lawson won’t challenge Price in 2010

Lisa Sorg · 6 Aug 2009, 9:30 AM · Comment

Republican B.J. Lawson, who challenged incumbent Democrat David Price in the 2008 election for the Fourth congressional district, has announced he will not run again for the seat in 2010. Lawson lost by a margin of 63 percent to 36 percent. The district includes Durham and Orange counties and parts of Chatham and Wake, including Cary.

Lawson, who lives in Cary, said he would focus on supporting other Republicans nationwide and on electing “ more principled Republicans to state legislature in 2010 so our next redistricting can empower voters to choose their politicians, instead of vice versa. We must also eliminate our state’s tyrannical involuntary municipal annexation laws, and stop our Californicating state budget… ”

UPDATE MARCH 26: Wednesday evening, the Bulls announced that Price has been assigned to Durham

The rumblings are getting louder, and Adam Sobsey has been listening over at Triangle Offense.

And there’s bad news for Fernando Perez, last year’s super-fast center fielder who ended the season on the Tampa Bay World Series roster and also was seen down there co-hosting a rally for presidential candidate Barack Obama.

The latest campaign finance reports from Lawson, Price

U.S. Rep. David Price raised more than $192,000 from July through September, according to federal campaign finance reports filed Oct. 15. His total campaign contributions for this election cycle tip $856,000 for the period ending Sept. 30; he has spent $651,000. Read the full report (pdf-Adobe Reader required): price-3rdquarter

Republican challenger B.J. Lawson garnered more than $69,000 for the same period, bring his contribution total to $215,000 for the cycle. That amount does not include a $230,000 windfall he received after Texas Republican U.S. Rep. Ron Paul endorsed him earlier in October. Lawson has spent $180,000 since the campaign began. The next federal filing date is Oct. 23, which covers contributions received from Oct. 1-20.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, top industries contributing to Price’s campaign are pharmaceuticals, defense contractors and lawyers. Nearly 70 percent—about $170,000—of his contributions came from within N.C.’s Fourth Congressional District. He received more than $50,000 from donors in the Washington, D.C. area.

As for Lawson, a former doctor who started his own software company, his top industries are securities and investment, health professionals and computers. Fifty-four percent of his contributions were in-state, including $41,500 from the district. He received $5,300 from his hometown of Lakeland, Fla.

Tampa Bay Rays (and ex-Bulls) campaign with Obama

David Fellerath · 20 Oct 2008, 7:27 PM · Comment

In a fortuitous bit of timing, Barack Obama arrived in Florida the day after the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Boston Red Sox for the American League pennant.

In a rally at George Steinbrenner Field, Obama was introduced by the savior of Game 7, rookie pitching phenom David Price.

Among the half-dozen players joining Obama were at least two other members of the 2008 Durham Bulls: the Howard Zinn-reading lightning bolt Fernando Perez and the fence-busting slugger Jonny Gomes.

The Boston Globe has the report—a rueful one, given the fate of their Sox. (That’s Perez on the left in the photo, and the player shaking Obama’s hand bears a strong resemblance to Gomes.) Reporter Scott Helman notes that the ever-cautious Obama took care not to endorse the Rays in their looming World Series confrontation with the Philadelphia Phillies.

He was careful, though, not to necessarily endorse the Rays in their World Series match-up against the Phillies. It’s easy to understand why: The Phillies, too, hail from an important swing state up north, a little battleground called Pennsylvania.

Lawson-Price forum postponed

Lisa Sorg · 2 Oct 2008, 7:45 AM · 2 Comments

The congressional candidates’ forum between Republican BJ Lawson and Democrat David Price scheduled for this evening at Carolina Meadows has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m.

Lawson is running against Price, the incumbent, for the Fourth Congressional District seat, which represents Orange, Durham and part of Wake counties.

The postponement should allow people to get good seats for the televised v-p debate. Check out the Indy’s Triangulator post to see who is hosting the public viewings:

Last stand for Bulls tonight?

David Fellerath · 11 Sep 2008, 12:06 PM · Comment

Perhaps it’s because Dan Johnson (and Fernando Perez, Justin Ruggiano et al.) are in Tampa now, but the Bulls have fallen behind two games to none in the best-of-five International League finals against the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre Yankees. In Pennsylvania last night, the Bulls lost 1-0 in a 13-inning pitching duel.

Tonight, the teams take the field at Durham Bulls Athletic Park at 7:05 p.m. In a clash of multimillion-dollar pitching prospects,  Jeff Niemann starts for the Bulls while the Yankees’ dubious $20 million investment, Kei Igawa, starts for the visiting nine.

In news from yesterday, Bulls lefty hurler David Price, the consensus top pitching prospect in the minor leagues, was named by USA Today as the minor league player of the year.
