N.C. Central wasn’t joking when the Eagles’ 2009 football schedule was announced.
The Eagles are in their third season as a member of Division I’s Football Championship Subdivision after a long run in NCAA Division II, and the schedule reflects a total change in the competition philosophy.
There were lots of “oohs” and “ahhs” when the slate came out including huge new challenges with cross-town rival Duke and in-state FCS superpower Appalachian State. But there was a third game in that category in Liberty - the school founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell (pictured) - and that’s what the Eagles will be facing on the road Saturday night at 7 at Williams Stadium. It’s the teams’ first meeting, as their paths never crossed back when the schools were both in Division II.
If NCCU manages to win it probably won’t be considered the most significant win in school history, but it would probably be the biggest upset.
Danny Rocco’s Flames are the two-time defending champions of the Big South Conference, and finished 10-2 last season. They’re ranked No. 24 in the FCS coaches’ poll after keeping West Virginia interested into the fourth quarter in a 33-20 loss in their season opener. Continue reading »

PEARSON CAFETERIA/DURHAM N.C. Central moved its weekly football rouser to a permanent location this week, its brand spanking new cafeteria where Coach Mose Rison (pictured) is participating in the athletic department’s weekly radio show.
It’s going to be a very positive thing for the Eagles if the move turns out to be good luck.
NCCU began its season on a bit of a disappointing note, falling 31-24 to Hampton as the Pirates prevailed because the Eagles made a few more mistakes.
But both the yardage statistics and Rison’s comments are on the same page. The Eagles didn’t get pushed around at all.
“After watching the film carefully on Sunday after returning from Hampton there were some real disappointments,” Rison said. “We thought we played well enough to win the game.”
The Eagles will have to play much better this week to have a chance to keep the fourth quarter interesting, much less pull off an upset.
They’ll travel on Saturday to Liberty, the two-time defending champions of the Big South Conference. The Flames didn’t win their season opener on the road, either, but the opponent was a little more powerful as they lost 33-20 at West Virginia. Continue reading »

The surging Pack play Rutgers Monday, Dec. 29, in Birmingham, Ala. The school was allotted 10,000 tickets to sell and the N&O reported today that just under 3,000 have been sold.
No doubt it will become a tougher ticket as the date approaches, but why wait: The N.C. State athletic site has all the resources you need to plan your trip. And, if you can’t go, they’re suggesting that you purchase a ticket and donate it to the Big Brothers/ Big Sisters charity in Birmingham.
UNC fans, by the way, can purchase tickets here for the Tar Heels’ Saturday, Dec. 27 showdown with the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte.
