NCCU ends season with road loss

Mike Potter · 25 Feb 2010, 9:46 PM · Comment

nccdavisN.C. Central finished its men’s basketball season without a win on the road.

Vincent Davis (pictured) had 25 points and C.J. Wilkerson 22, but the Eagles fell 83-69 at Longwood.

NCCU finished 7-21, including an 0-17 record on the road. The Lancers avenged an 81-78 loss to NCCU 12 days earlier.

Dana Smith led independent Longwood (11-18) with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Antwan Carter added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Lancers, while Kevin Swecker finished with 13 points.

Eagles can’t climb out of a deep hole as Coastal spoils Senior Night

Mike Potter · 15 Feb 2010, 9:46 PM · Comment

nccuchas1McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central is on a winning streak with three straight victories over Division I teams at home.

But if the 7-20 Eagles are going to continue it, they’ll probably have to play their best game of the year tonight.

The opponent is Big South leader Coastal Carolina (22-5), mentored by former Clemson and Auburn coach Cliff Ellis who is currently No. 15 on the active Division I wins list. It’s the schools’ first meeting in basketball, and NCCU will return the game next season.

It’s the Eagles’ final home game and of course Senior Night, with Joshua Worthy and Clee Sherrod II being honored. Worthy already graduated in December.

It’s no surprise as Coastal wins 68-57, getting a huge early lead and then never letting the Eagles any closer than eight back in the second half.

The Eagles get off to an awful start, trailing 17-0 before Dami Sapara finally scores at 11:37.

And they get it going the rest of the half, trailing only 31-20 at the break as Joseph Harris leads the Chanticleers with 11 points. The problem is rebounding, as the visitors dominate the boards 22-9 before the break.

The Eagles never really threaten, but bolstered by a noisy home crowd of 2,421 never give up either.

Mario Edwards leads Coastal with 18 points, followed by Harris with 16 and Kierre Greenwood 13.

Nick Chasten (pictured) paces NCCU with 17 points, followed by C.J. Wilkerson with 16 and Vincent Davis 11. Continue reading »

Eagles chip Longwood to extend winning streak to three games

Mike Potter · 13 Feb 2010, 10:07 PM · Comment

nccuwilk2McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central is in Durham for the fourth of a five-game homestand, and the Eagles have a chance to keep a very good thing going.

LeVelle Moton’s club (6-20) has won two straight games, both against Division I teams. And tonight’s opponent is independent Longwood, a team the Eagles beat here last season to split a home-and home series. The teams will play again on Feb. 25 in Farmville, Va.

Longwood (9-16) is on a five-game winning streak including a pair of non-Division I teams, but it includes a road victory over Fairleigh-Dickinson. But that goes by the boards as four Eagles score at least 15 points each in an 81-78 victory. Continue reading »

Subs come off the bench for big plays as NCCU gets Moton a Division I win

Mike Potter · 6 Feb 2010, 6:14 PM · 1 Comment

nccudaviMcDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central tries once again to get LeVelle Moton his first win over a Division I team as head coach, and this would seem to be a good opportunity.

The opponent is Savannah State, the only other Historically Black College in the country that is playing as an independent this season. NCCU is the only Division I HBCU the Tigers are playing this season.

SSU has won three straight in the series over the last two seasons, including a 46-44 overtime win in Savannah on Jan. 20.

The game is being played at 3 p.m., the time rescheduled a couple of days ago from 7 p.m. because of concerns about nasty winter weather.

NCCU is 4-20 with all four victories over small colleges, and a win today would give the Eagles their highest win total since joining Division I as a transitional member two seasons ago. They get it, outscoring the visitors 7-2 after the final TV timeout to win 65-60.

NCCU scoring leader C.J. Wilkerson gets two fouls in the first 1:38 and plays only seven minutes in the first half. But the first half turns out to be a wash as the teams head into the locker room tied at 30-30. Savannah State is out-shooting the home team 48 percent to 37.9 at the break.

Neither team ever threatens to break the game open.

The Eagles suffer a blow with 3:59 left when Wilkerson fouls out with the score tied, but Patrick Hardy makes just one of two free throws.

Vincent Davis (pictured), Wilkerson’s replacement, gives NCCU the lead for the last time on a 3-pointer with 2:10 left. Continue reading »

McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central goes for its second straight win tonight, taking underdog Newport News Apprentice School in the finale of the BC Powder Classic.

Apprentice, a member of the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association, comes in having played just one game in school history against a Division I opponent. The Builders lost 112-96 at Virginia Military early in the 2007-08 season.

The first game of the second night’s doubleheader goes pretty much as expected, with CIAA member Chowan taking out Tennessee Temple 71-54 to complete an unbeaten weekend.

NCCU wins the nightcap 86-65 to improve to 4-15, tying last season’s win total.

All four wins are against opponents below the Division I level, and that well is now empty for this season. Continue reading »

McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central gets a break from the Division I wars tonight, and it would be a good idea for the Eagles to take advantage of it.

LeVelle Moton’s club will be a strong favorite against Tennessee Temple of the National Christian College Athletic Association in the nightcap of the first night of the BC Powder Classic.

In the first game of the night, CIAA member Chowan blasts Newport News Apprentice 83-58.

In the second, the Eagles take care of business with a 75-50 win over the Crusaders.

Unfortunately, the winners won’t face off Saturday night.

The Eagles get off to a slow start, falling behind 18-14 before a 10-0 run gives them the lead for good. The run includes old-fashioned three-point plays from C.J. Wilkerson, Dami Sapara and Dijon Manns. Continue reading »

Eagles lose a painful one at home to streaking High Point

Mike Potter · 11 Jan 2010, 10:09 PM · Comment

nccmotonMcDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central finally returns from its six-game road trip in men’s basketball, and the Eagles are sorely in need of a win.

Tonight’s assignment won’t be an easy one.

The opponent is High Point (8-6), which is currently on a four-game winning streak and sold out its last home game on Saturday against Radford.

The Panthers are 3-0 all-time against NCCU, including a 70-58 win at the Millis Center on Dec. 29.  And Eagle coach LeVelle Moton (pictured) is still seeking his first win over a Division I opponent.

High Point is in its first year under coach Scott Cherry, who played for Dean Smith’s 1993 NCAA title team at UNC. One of his assistants is Wes Miller, who played for the Tar Heels’ 2005 NCAA champions.

It’s the Panthers’ second game in the building in as many seasons; High Point is the only in-state Division I opponent to visit the building since 1985.

Tonight will be the first home game as an Eagle for 6-8 junior forward Lamar Pittman. High Point will play without Nick Barbour, sitting out with an ankle injury.

And it turns out to be a good night for the visitors, who survive in a noisy 58-55 decision. Continue reading »

Eagles try for big upset at Indiana

Mike Potter · 18 Dec 2009, 9:30 PM · Comment

nccuwilk3N.C. Central will look for a huge upset Saturday night in men’s basketball.

The Eagles (2-8), will continue to seek their first win against a Division I team for first-year coach LeVelle Moton when they visit Indiana (4-5) at Assembly Hall.

The game will be shown on the Big Ten Network, the Eagles’ second appearance on that channel this season. NCCU lost 73-63 at Iowa on Nov. 28.

C.J. Wilkerson (pictured) is the leading scorer and rebounder for NCCU, which will not have junior wing Vincent Davis for the second straight game because of a personal leave of absence.

Bawa Muniru, a 6-10 freshman out of Durham’s Mt. Zion Christian Academy, is a reserve center for the Hoosiers. Continue reading »

Turnover-prone NCCU loses a tough one to some other Eagles

Mike Potter · 16 Dec 2009, 10:41 PM · Comment

nccuwilk2McLENDON-McDOUGALD GYM/DURHAM It’s a much bigger game for N.C. Central tonight than the fans seem to think.

The Eagles are taking on another set of Eagles from Florida Gulf Coast University, which is also in a transition status into full membership in NCAA Division I. If NCCU can win tonight, it’s the first win over a Division I team for first-year head coach LeVelle Moton.

FGCU (2-6) is coming off a big victory, having won 86-82 at Atlantic Sun foe South Carolina-Upstate on Monday night to break a road losing streak of 24 games.

NCCU (2-7) also won its last game, taking out visiting Carver Bible College 82-63 11 days ago before the exam break.

The teams have met once before, with FGCU winning 66-58 on its home court last season.

This time the visitors prevail 76-67 on the strength of 21 steals.

The Eagles are tied at 39 at halftime.

NCCU, playing without second-leading scorer Vincent Davis who is temporarily away from the team for personal reasons, leads by as much as 13-4 after scoring 13 straight points. The visitors respond with a 27-7 run to go up 31-20, but NCCU comes back for the halftime tie.

NCCU leads 58-53 on a Dami Sapara free throw with 11:35 left, but the visitors take control down the stretch. The Eagles trail 61-60 when point guard Michael Glasker fouls out at the 5:58 mark. It’s still only 66-65 with 2:43 left, but NCCU can’t score again.

The visitors get 14 points from Reed Baker and a double-double of 12 points and 11 assists from Reggie Chambers. Derrick O’Neil adds 11 points and Eddie Murray 11 off the bench for FGCU.

C.J. Wilkerson (pictured) paces NCCU with a season-high 26 points, followed by 12 from Nick Chasten and 10 from T.J. Granger. Continue reading »

Eagles get into deep hole before climbing out to blow past Carver Bible

Mike Potter · 5 Dec 2009, 10:43 PM · Comment

nccuchas

McLENDON-McDOUGALD GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central returns for a rare early-season home game in men’s basketball.

And it’s one of those guarantee games against a lower-division foe, spending some of the money the Eagles (1-7) have made by playing on the road against teams from the ACC and the Big Ten.

The opponent is Carver Bible College (0-12), an historically black Christian school from Atlanta which has yet to win a game this season.

Tonight is part of Trailblazers Weekend, in which the university is honoring some of its athletic pioneers as part of its Centennial Celebration, and there may be a four-digit crowd in the house.

The Cougars have one local player in sophomore guard Cory Evans, who played at Durham’s Northern High. It takes quite a while for the Eagles to get comfortable, but they finally make a big run down the stretch and win 82-63.

NCCU is up 42-40 at halftime, but that lead comes anything but easily as the Eagles shoot just 34.9 percent in the first half to the visitors’ 50.

Carver leads by as many as 15 points, at 29-14 on an Evans 3-pointer at 10:24, before the Eagles go on a run to take the lead at the break.

The Eagles’ largest lead is 21 points, at 78-57 on a pair of Dami Sapara free throws with 4:20 to go.

NCCU places six players in double figures, led by Nick Chasten (pictured) with 15 points and 13 rebounds and Sapara with 11 and 11 off the bench. Michael Glasker also has 15 points on five 3-pointers, while Vincent Davis adds 14, C.J. Wilkerson 12 and T.J. Granger 11. Continue reading »
