KENAN MEMORIAL STADIUM/CHAPEL HILL — It was a great day with great weather for possibly the greatest rivalry in all of college sports — Duke versus UNC, and the Heels remained in possession of the beloved Victory Bell after UNC’s 19-6 victory over Duke. Here is Tar Heel Football beat writer Jacob Swiger’s post-game article or Blue Devil Football beat writer Mike Potter’s post-game article; for the story in photos, follow the page break.

The 2008-2009 college basketball season began with the national pundits crowning the North Carolina Tar Heels national champions, awarding them the first-ever unanimous No. 1 ranking in the preseason Associated Press poll. The Tar Heels were the head of the class, better than the middling field of competitors who could only hope to jockey for national runner-up.
On Monday evening, the Tar Heels brought Chapel Hill its fifth NCAA Championship. The manner in which they did left little doubt that they were the best team in the field. Continue reading »

By this point, North Carolina’s four factor profile is pretty well known. The Tar Heels are an offensive machine, yet to score below one point per possession in any game this year. The offense works because of an even balance across all four factors: offensive rebounding, taking care of the basketball, shooting percentage, and free throw attempts.
Unfortunately for Michigan State, the Spartan defense only seems capable of taking away one of the four factors from the Tar Heel offense: rebounding. Continue reading »

A week of anticipation has been building up to Saturday’s Final Four match-up between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Villanova Wildcats. The contest has be analyzed from all angles, as is often the case when there are only only three college basketball games remaining in the season.
In the last five days there have been stories written about Tyler Hansbrough’s last hurrah, Villanova’s height issues, Danny Green’s father and Scottie Reynolds’ decision making. However, the statistics and the four factors tell their own story.
The known commodity going into the game is UNC’s offense. Continue reading »

North Carolina Guard Wayne Ellington shoots over UNC-Asheville.
The North Carolina Tar Heels advanced to the Elite Eight for the third consecutive year Friday by beating the Gonzaga Bulldogs 98-77. In the Elite Eight the Tar Heels draw a very different team than the Bulldogs, the Oklahoma Sooners. While Gonzaga was a balanced team Oklahoma plays much more like North Carolina; efficient offense first and defense as needed. In fact the Oklahoma Sooners have the lowest raw and adjusted defensive efficiencies (points allowed per possession) of any of the remaining eight teams.
The Sooners are as unbalanced across the four factors as they are between offense and defense. Continue reading »

Yesterday I previewed a game that displayed two balanced teams. Duke and Villanova were similar in both personnel and in the Four Factors. The ACC’s second Sweet Sixteen contest has matching skin-deep similarities. Both Gonzaga and North Carolina have skilled big men, silky smooth shooters and lightening quick point guards.
However, looking past the lineup similarities, the Gonzaga Bulldogs go about winning games in different ways than the Tar Heels do. Continue reading »

The ACC POY, seen earlier this season in a game against Kentucky (photo by Jeremy M. Lange)
You don’t have to watch a North Carolina basketball game on television long to hear an announcer opine that Tywon Lawson is “the straw that stirs the drink,” “the gas pedal” or some other descriptive metaphor for the role that Lawson plays in the speedy, efficient Tar Heel offense.
However, Ty Lawson is much more than that. Continue reading »

Locks
Since the last update not too much has changed on the ACC bubble. For starters the teams that were locks are obviously still locks. Along with those four teams (UNC, Duke, Wake and Clemson) Florida State has since become a lock to make the NCAA Tournament.
The teams’ seeds in the tournament are roughly unchanged as well. UNC has essentially locked up a No. 1 seed, Duke is still looking like a No. 2 seed and Wake Forest has solidified their position as a No. 3 seed. Continue reading »

With the ACC Tournament coming up, it seems appropriate to take a look at each team’s statistical odds of taking home the tournament title. To do so, it is best to use each team’s Pythagorean win percentage which is determined roughly by the difference between their points scored and points allowed. Ken Pomeroy keeps these numbers, along with much other useful information, on his site. Along with simply tabulating the information, Pomeroy makes adjustments based on schedule strength and his work has proven highly predictive.
The following table shows the chances each team has at reaching each stage of the tournament. As is evident from the odds below, a team’s seed line isn’t always proportionate to their odds of winning. Similarly, having the No. 1 seed doesn’t always mean having the easiest path to the championship.

The table seems to pass a quick eye test. Continue reading »

With only two weekends and three games remaining in the regular season, it’s time to begin looking at which teams have already done enough to punch a dance card for March, which still have some work left to do and which need a miracle four-game run in the ACC tournament to continue their dancing beyond this year’s ACC tournament site, Atlanta.
Locks
North Carolina (24-3, 10-3 ACC, RPI: 3, SOS: 19) The Tar Heels practically came into the season with their ticket punched — if that is even possible. The Heels are currently slated to be a No. 1 seed with only a surprising collapse keeping them from it. Since they are North Carolina’s best team, look for them to get a short trip to Greensboro in the first round.
Duke (22-5, 9-4 ACC, RPI: 4, SOS: 8) The Blue Devils are also a certified lock to be in the tournament, although their seeding is up for some debate. Currently they’re the second best team in the ACC, which should have them earning at least a three seed and likely a two seed. Their play has strengthened considerably since their 2-4 swoon, winning against Wake Forest and on the road against an improved Maryland squad. If the Devils’ continue their strong play look for them to solidify a No. 2 seed and an assured trip to Greensboro.
Wake Forest (22-5, 8-5 ACC, RPI: 18, SOS: 71) The Demon Deacons are in the same position as Duke, except they lost the more recent match-up between the two teams. Continue reading »
