N.C. State and N.C. Central hit the hardwood in women’s basketball again tonight, and both are hoping to bounce back after losses.
Kellie Harper’s Wolfpack has a tough assignment, heading to No. 21 Virginia in a key ACC test two nights after a hard-fought home-court loss to archrival UNC.
Bonae Holston (pictured) is the leading scorer and rebounder for the Wolfpack, while Monica Wright leads Virginia in every major statistical category.
The Wolfpack’s biggest victory of last season was a 60-54 home-court win over No. 17 Virginia.
NCCU, which beat UMES 69-60 twenty days ago in Durham, had a four-game winning streak snapped in a 64-58 loss at UNC Asheville on Friday night.
The Eagles’ game is the second of a six-game road swing. Continue reading »

Three of the four Division I women’s basketball teams in the Triangle will hit the court tonight, and two of them have televised home games.
N.C. State and Wake Forest have both had some good wins this season and both are fighting to get toward the ACC’s middle to upper echelon, so the 6:30 contest between the old school Wake county rivals - back when the Deacons were actually in Wake Forest - will have a lot to say about that.
Bonae Holston (pictured) is the Wolfpack’s leading scorer and rebounder.
The second half of the TV doubleheader is in Chapel Hill, where No. 14 UNC will be a huge favorite over last-place Clemson.
Traveling tonight is N.C. Central, which has won six of its last eight games and will visit a UNC Asheville team that has lost five straight. It’s a game the Eagles need to win if they’re going to make a run at a .500 finish. Continue reading »

McLENDON-McDOUGALD GYM/DURHAM It’s the home opener for both basketball teams at N.C. Central, and each is still looking for its first victory of the season after two road losses.
For the men’s team under first-year head coach LeVelle Moton, about all that has been established is that the Eagles aren’t ready for the ACC. So far they’ve played a killer schedule. But they’ll be clear favorites tonight when they take the floor against Division III N.C. Wesleyan (0-1).
Forward Lamar Pittman will continue to sit out tonight as he recovers from his ACL injury of last fall. The Eagles are not good early, but shrug off a double-digit deficit to prevail 85-70 behind 25 points from T.J. Granger (pictured). Continue reading »

CAMERON INDOOR STADIUM/DURHAM – With less than two minutes to play in the first half of Duke’s 43-point rout at Cameron Indoor Stadium, UNC Asheville was within striking distance of the No. 6 team in the country. After Asheville’s leading scorer, Reid Augst, hit a pair of free throws to make it 46-35, Duke turned the ball over, then committed a lazy foul. Yet on the ensuing inbounds pass, backup point guard Matt Dickey watched as the ball went through his hands and out of bounds. The Blue Devils responded with a soaring dunk, on their own inbounds pass, by Gerald Henderson. Two plays later, Henderson stole the ball, and passed it up the court to Kyle Singler, who dunked once again, making it 50-35. The Bulldogs never got closer.
The story of Wednesday night’s game was Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s decision to start a group of B-Teamers, led by now-backup point guard Greg Paulus: David McClure, Miles Plumlee, Martynas Pocius and Elliot Williams. The starting nods were mostly nominal, as Duke’s “bench” scored 72 points, including 12 or more points from each of its traditional starters. After the game, Krzyzewski said the move was intended to boost his backup players’–and in particular, Greg Paulus’–confidence. Paulus played well, going 4-8 from three-point range, and finishing with 12 points and 3 assists. But, sophomore point guard Nolan Smith was the star of the night, mimicking Paulus’ stat line and commanding a true presence on the court.

North Carolina’s basketball team didn’t show much mercy to UNC-Asheville, sending the Bulldogs hobbling back to Roy Williams’ hometown after a 116-48 shellacking on Sunday night in Chapel Hill.
Williams may have cultivated his love of Coca-Cola as a boy in Asheville, but the Bulldogs strictly were New Coke on this evening.
Even without superstar Tyler Hansbrough, who sat out for precautionary reasons while he continues to mend from shin and ankle injuries, the Tar Heels simply were too talented for their in-state counterparts. After perhaps two minutes of sloppy play, UNC began to force a frenetic pace and take away virtually anything the Bulldogs wanted to do on the offensive end.
