N.C. Central made another good run at an established Division I team, but the Eagles eventually fell 68-58 at East Carolina.
The Eagles (2-12), who had lost on their two previous trips to Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum by an average of 19 points, trailed just 56-54 on a Nick Chasten (pictured) jumper with 4:59 to go before the Pirates (6-8) scored the next six points to get some breathing room.
All five ECU starters were in double figures. Darrius Morrow led the way with 17 points while Chad Wynn had a double-double of 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Jontae Sherrod added 13 points for the Pirates, followed by Brock Young and Jamar Abrams with 12 points each.
C.J. Wilkerson led NCCU with 18 points, followed by T.J. Granger with 16 and Michael Glasker with 10 points and nine assists.
The Eagles’ next game is on Wednesday night at Colgate.

McLENDON-McDOUGALD GYM/DURHAM It’s a much bigger game for N.C. Central tonight than the fans seem to think.
The Eagles are taking on another set of Eagles from Florida Gulf Coast University, which is also in a transition status into full membership in NCAA Division I. If NCCU can win tonight, it’s the first win over a Division I team for first-year head coach LeVelle Moton.
FGCU (2-6) is coming off a big victory, having won 86-82 at Atlantic Sun foe South Carolina-Upstate on Monday night to break a road losing streak of 24 games.
NCCU (2-7) also won its last game, taking out visiting Carver Bible College 82-63 11 days ago before the exam break.
The teams have met once before, with FGCU winning 66-58 on its home court last season.
This time the visitors prevail 76-67 on the strength of 21 steals.
The Eagles are tied at 39 at halftime.
NCCU, playing without second-leading scorer Vincent Davis who is temporarily away from the team for personal reasons, leads by as much as 13-4 after scoring 13 straight points. The visitors respond with a 27-7 run to go up 31-20, but NCCU comes back for the halftime tie.
NCCU leads 58-53 on a Dami Sapara free throw with 11:35 left, but the visitors take control down the stretch. The Eagles trail 61-60 when point guard Michael Glasker fouls out at the 5:58 mark. It’s still only 66-65 with 2:43 left, but NCCU can’t score again.
The visitors get 14 points from Reed Baker and a double-double of 12 points and 11 assists from Reggie Chambers. Derrick O’Neil adds 11 points and Eddie Murray 11 off the bench for FGCU.
C.J. Wilkerson (pictured) paces NCCU with a season-high 26 points, followed by 12 from Nick Chasten and 10 from T.J. Granger. Continue reading »

McLENDON-McDOUGALD GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central returns for a rare early-season home game in men’s basketball.
And it’s one of those guarantee games against a lower-division foe, spending some of the money the Eagles (1-7) have made by playing on the road against teams from the ACC and the Big Ten.
The opponent is Carver Bible College (0-12), an historically black Christian school from Atlanta which has yet to win a game this season.
Tonight is part of Trailblazers Weekend, in which the university is honoring some of its athletic pioneers as part of its Centennial Celebration, and there may be a four-digit crowd in the house.
The Cougars have one local player in sophomore guard Cory Evans, who played at Durham’s Northern High. It takes quite a while for the Eagles to get comfortable, but they finally make a big run down the stretch and win 82-63.
NCCU is up 42-40 at halftime, but that lead comes anything but easily as the Eagles shoot just 34.9 percent in the first half to the visitors’ 50.
Carver leads by as many as 15 points, at 29-14 on an Evans 3-pointer at 10:24, before the Eagles go on a run to take the lead at the break.
The Eagles’ largest lead is 21 points, at 78-57 on a pair of Dami Sapara free throws with 4:20 to go.
NCCU places six players in double figures, led by Nick Chasten (pictured) with 15 points and 13 rebounds and Sapara with 11 and 11 off the bench. Michael Glasker also has 15 points on five 3-pointers, while Vincent Davis adds 14, C.J. Wilkerson 12 and T.J. Granger 11. Continue reading »

LeVelle Moton and Isiah Thomas each got his first win as a college basketball coach earlier this week.
After tonight, one of them is going to be on a two-game winning streak.
Moton’s N.C. Central club (1-2) will play its second game in Miami so far this season tonight at 7, when the Eagles visit Thomas’ Florida International club (1-3).
It’s a part of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, in which both teams already had a loss at UNC.
The Eagles will play two more games after tonight in the round-robin event on the Golden Panthers’ floor, taking on Murray State on Sunday at 8 p.m. and James Madison on Monday at 4.
NCCU will probably continue to be without forward Lamar Pittman, who remains day-to-day as he recovers from knee surgery of last fall. Continue reading »

McLENDON-McDOUGALD GYM/DURHAM It’s the home opener for both basketball teams at N.C. Central, and each is still looking for its first victory of the season after two road losses.
For the men’s team under first-year head coach LeVelle Moton, about all that has been established is that the Eagles aren’t ready for the ACC. So far they’ve played a killer schedule. But they’ll be clear favorites tonight when they take the floor against Division III N.C. Wesleyan (0-1).
Forward Lamar Pittman will continue to sit out tonight as he recovers from his ACL injury of last fall. The Eagles are not good early, but shrug off a double-digit deficit to prevail 85-70 behind 25 points from T.J. Granger (pictured). Continue reading »

McLENDON-McDOUGALD GYM/DURHAM LeVelle Moton knew exactly what he was getting into when he took the job as men’s head basketball coach at N.C. Central in the spring following the end of Henry Dickerson’s contract.
After all Moton (pictured), an NCCU Athletics Hall of Famer for his playing career, had already been an assistant with the program for the previous two seasons in the team’s first two as transitional members of NCAA Division I.
He and his Eagles will get plenty of exposure in their very first game Wednesday night, when they travel to defending NCAA champion UNC for a 9 p.m. game at the Smith Center. UNC (1-0) is ranked No. 4, and the game which is part of the 2K Sports Coaches vs. Cancer Classic will be shown on ESPNU. NCCU went 4-27 last season, winning the same number of games as the Eagles had the year before.
Monday was “media day” for both of NCCU’s basketball teams. Veteran coach Joli Robinson’s women’s squad, which had some more regular success last season in a 10-17 campaign, won’t have an easy season opener either. Robinson’s club will visit Maryland on Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
Moton said the opener against the Tar Heels is just the kind of game NCCU will have to play from now on. They have already played at more big-time schools than one can count on two hands including all of the state’s ACC “Big Four,” and two years ago the Eagles visited then-defending NCAA champion Florida.
“I just felt as if (the scheduling) was just meant to happen,” Moton said. “I’ve told the guys, this is something we wanted trying to become D-I and get our program prepared. It’s like trying to get into a party or into a dance, and they finally let you in. You can’t sit against the wall and complain about the music that the D.J. is playing. You’ve just got to go out there and do your best two-step and whatever happens, happens. Our first dance is with Carolina. She’s a pretty good dancer, but we’ve got to try to keep up with her.”
Moton said there’s no way his team can just throw its five players onto the floor against the Tar Heels and expect to play a respectable game. He said he may even start the game with four guards on the floor.
When more reasonable assignments arise, the starters will probably be three returnees - 5-7 junior Michael Glasker (2.8, 1.1 rebs. last season) at the point, 6-2 junior Vincent Davis (11.2, 4.0) on the wing and 6-5 senior Joshua Worthy (1.7, 2.4) at power forward - and newcomer J.C. transfers C.J. Wilkerson at shooting guard and T.J. Granger at the post.
Wilkerson was rated by The Sporting News as the top “newcomer” among Division I Independents, the same designation that went to 6-8 J.C. transfer Lamar Pittman last year. Pittman has yet to play after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the fall of 2008, but has been medically cleared to play and is expected to go in the home opener against N.C. Wesleyan on Nov. 18.
Robinson’s team has already played an exhibition game, winning 63-51 over Johnson C. Smith on Sunday.
The Eagle women’s team will play five ACC opponents this season including UNC and Duke.
“I’ve never been afraid to play against strong competition,” Robinson said. “What you worry about is if this competition will kill your athletes’ confidence. We just don’t have the depth that the big major schools have. I hope we get there. I don’t plan on us playing five ACC schools again after this year. Hopefully being in the MEAC (beginning in 2010-11) we won’t have to do that.”
Robinson’s team will play without senior forward Jori Nwachukwu, who is being redshirted after suffering a leg injury last January.
Sophomore forward Chasidy Williams, who was NCCU’s leading scorer last season, is also injured and will not be available for the first few games of the season.
Robinson said sophomores 5-5 Blaire Houston (9.2, 2.5) and 5-5 Danielle DeBerry (5.2, 2.5) will start in the backcourt, with 5-9 senior Latoya Bennett (4.2, 6.2) and 5-8 junior Shanise Banks (1.8, 1.2) at forward and 6-0 junior Katrice Elliott (1.0, 1.1) at center.
She said 5-7 freshman Joanna Miller, who scored 23 points against JCSU, will be coming off the bench when the season begins.
