NCCU goes for third straight victory

Mike Potter · 13 Feb 2010, 12:01 AM · Comment

nccuglas1N.C. Central has a real two-game winning streak against Division I opposition in men’s basketball, and LeVelle Moton’s Eagles will try to keep it alive tonight.

NCCU (6-20) will host independent Longwood (9-16) at 7 p.m. at McDougald-McLendon Gym.

The Eagles, who have beaten visiting Savannah State and Maryland-Eastern Shore over the past week, will try to beat Longwood for the second straight time.

The teams collected a home-court blowout victories against each other last season.

Eagles announce 10-game gridiron schedule with six home dates

Mike Potter · 11 Feb 2010, 2:19 PM · Comment

nccrison1N.C. Central has announced its 10-game football schedule for 2010, with six home dates including the Eagles’ two biggest historic rivals.

NCCU has had back-to-back four-win seasons in the transition process from Division II to Division I, but should have an excellent change to surpass the .500 mark this time in the fourth season under coach Mose Rison (pictured).

Coming to O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium on Sept. 25 is former CIAA rival and both former and new MEAC rival North Carolina A&T, which will be visiting Durham for the first time since 1992.

Also visiting, on Sept. 11, will be long-time former CIAA rival Winston-Salem State.

The Eagles’ schedule opens on a Thursday night, with the Sept. 2 home game against former CIAA rival Johnson C. Smith.

The Eagles will host Edward Waters for their annual homecoming game on Oct. 30, the final game of the home schedule.

NCCU, which will be a member of the MEAC in the fall but not eligible for conference championships until the next season, will also host MEAC members Hampton on Oct. 9 and Bethune-Cookman on Oct. 23.

The four road games include a return trip to Appalachian State on Sept. 18, a game against Georgia State in the Georgia Dome on Oct. 16, a visit to MEAC member Delaware State on Nov. 6 and the season finale at Savannah State on Nov. 13.

The only first meeting is with Georgia State, which will be fielding varsity football for the first time. NCCU leads the all-time series with six opponents, the exceptions being ASU, A&T and Hampton. Continue reading »

Kastanek, White lead the way as Wolfpack ends three-game slide

Mike Potter · 7 Feb 2010, 7:28 PM · Comment

ncsukastREYNOLDS COLISEUM/RALEIGH N.C. State returns home for a Super Bowl Sunday matchup, this time against a team that seems to be at its same level in the ACC.

The Wolfpack (12-10, 2-5 ACC) is taking on Virginia Tech (12-10, 2-6), looking to snap a three-game losing streak one week after a 13-point loss at last-place Clemson. The Hokies, whose big claim to fame this season was a home-court shocker over UNC, have never beaten N.C. State in women’s basketball.

Both head coaches - the Wolfpack’s first-year mentor Kellie Harper and the Hokies’ Beth Dunkenberger - are former head coaches at Western Carolina.

Regional cable TV cameras are in the house. And the Wolfpack eventually responds with a pretty good show in a 70-57 victory. Continue reading »

Subs come off the bench for big plays as NCCU gets Moton a Division I win

Mike Potter · 6 Feb 2010, 6:14 PM · 1 Comment

nccudaviMcDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central tries once again to get LeVelle Moton his first win over a Division I team as head coach, and this would seem to be a good opportunity.

The opponent is Savannah State, the only other Historically Black College in the country that is playing as an independent this season. NCCU is the only Division I HBCU the Tigers are playing this season.

SSU has won three straight in the series over the last two seasons, including a 46-44 overtime win in Savannah on Jan. 20.

The game is being played at 3 p.m., the time rescheduled a couple of days ago from 7 p.m. because of concerns about nasty winter weather.

NCCU is 4-20 with all four victories over small colleges, and a win today would give the Eagles their highest win total since joining Division I as a transitional member two seasons ago. They get it, outscoring the visitors 7-2 after the final TV timeout to win 65-60.

NCCU scoring leader C.J. Wilkerson gets two fouls in the first 1:38 and plays only seven minutes in the first half. But the first half turns out to be a wash as the teams head into the locker room tied at 30-30. Savannah State is out-shooting the home team 48 percent to 37.9 at the break.

Neither team ever threatens to break the game open.

The Eagles suffer a blow with 3:59 left when Wilkerson fouls out with the score tied, but Patrick Hardy makes just one of two free throws.

Vincent Davis (pictured), Wilkerson’s replacement, gives NCCU the lead for the last time on a 3-pointer with 2:10 left. Continue reading »

Eagles play early today, still looking to top Division I foe

Mike Potter · 6 Feb 2010, 12:01 AM · Comment

nccuglasMaybe the time change will give N.C. Central some good luck.

The Eagles will host their men’s basketball game with Savannah State today at 3 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled 7 p.m., to help everyone involved avoid icy roads.

NCCU is still looking for its first win over a Division I opponent under first-year coach LeVelle Moton.

The Eagles almost got it on Jan. 20 in Savannah before the Tigers escaped with a 46-44 overtime win. SSU has won three straight over NCCU over the past two seasons.

Eagles lose double-digit lead, game to visiting Western Illinois

Mike Potter · 2 Feb 2010, 10:29 PM · Comment

nccuchasMcDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central gets to begin testing whether the Wizard of Oz’ Dorothy was right about home tonight.

The Eagles (4-19) have played 17 of their 23 previous men’s basketball games on the road and lost them all, but the next five are in their own nest.

NCCU isn’t in position to get an easy victory very often, and the five-game homestand won’t provide any gift-wrapped results. But no established national powers are coming to East Durham either, so at least every time the Eagles take the court they’ll have a reasonable chance for a mark in the left column.

Tonight’s opponent is Western Illinois, which agreed to come to Durham for the front end of a two-season home-and home contract. It’s definitely an escape, but the Leathernecks shoot 64.7 percent in the second half and win 53-50.

The Eagles seem to take control early. Only 6-10 center James Granstra is doing much for the Leathernecks as NCCU goes up 18-5 on a layup from Nick Chasten (pictured) at the 12:08 mark. NCCU leads 22-13 at the break as the visitors are shooting 20.0 percent. Continue reading »

NCCU wins a women’s game on the road

Mike Potter · 30 Jan 2010, 5:59 PM · Comment

nccumill2N.C. Central got into the win column on the road in women’s basketball, beating Savannah State 54-43 to complete a season sweep of the Tigers.

Joanna Miller (pictured) was the only player in double figures for the Eagles (7-13) with 19 points.

The victory was NCCU’s first on an opponent’s home floor this season.

Crissa Jackson and Courtney Long led SSU with 11 points apiece.

The Eagles’ next game is at Liberty on Thursday night.

Moton takes Eagles into a very tough assignment at N.C. State today

Mike Potter · 30 Jan 2010, 1:24 AM · Comment

nccmoton3LeVelle Moton will be a head coach in a college basketball game in his Raleigh hometown for the first time this afternoon, and knows his N.C. Central team won’t be favored.

The Eagles (4-18) will take on N.C. State (13-8) in a game that is going to be played at the RBC Center despite the snow that has paralyzed much of the state.

NCCU has visited the Wolfpack each of the past two seasons - the only other team the Eagles have played each of the past three seasons is Colgate - and although the team under Henry Dickerson at the time kept things respectable but didn’t keep the games close.

The Wolfpack won 87-59 last season and 54-29 in 2008.

Both NCCU teams are on the road today, as Joli Robinson’s women’s team will be looking for a season sweep at Savannah State.

Moton, said he’s looking forward to at least getting some fan support with a nearby road game. Continue reading »

Eagles’ road woes continue in low-scoring OT loss at Savannah State

Mike Potter · 20 Jan 2010, 10:26 PM · Comment

nccuglas1N.C. Central had an excellent opportunity to end its road losing streak in men’s basketball, but it just didn’t work out in the extra period.

Rashad Hassan had 14 points, leading Savannah State to a 46-44 overtime win over the Eagles.

Point guard Michael Glasker (pictured) led the Eagles (4-17) with 17 points and had 10 turnovers in an odd double-double. Dwayne Sims was the next highest scorer for NCCU with eight points.

Arnold Louis had eight points to go with his game-high 10 turnovers for SSU (7-12).

SSU scored just five points in the first half, but the Eagles had only 13 of their own at the break.

The Eagles will continue their quest for their first road win and first win against a Division I team for first-year coach LeVelle Moton on Jan. 27 at Youngstown State.

Cold Eagles fall hard at Va. Tech

Mike Potter · 18 Jan 2010, 11:59 PM · Comment

nccuchas3N.C. Central found out how cold things can get up in Blacksburg, Va., on Monday night.

The Eagles shot just 26.5 percent for the game, falling 72-30 in a men’s basketball game at Virginia Tech.

Erick Green was the only player in double figures for the winners with 11 points, but the Hokies got scoring from 11 different players.

Nick Chasten (pictured) scored 11 points for NCCU (4-16), which got eight from Dwayne Sims.

The Hokies (14-3) led 30-8 at halftime.

NCCU’s next game is on Wednesday night at Savannah State.
