Item No. 1.: No new news from the RailHawks front office on signings, but there is, nonetheless, a fresh tidbit about RailHawk winger Josh Gardner, who is trialling with the Seattle Sounders. In a piece published today in The Seattle Times, we learn that Gardner, by his own assessment and others, has matured since he played with the USL Sounders in 2007 and 2008.
Currently training with the team in Arizona, Gardner has been reunited with Sounders gaffer Sigi Schmid, who coached him with the Los Angeles Galaxy from 2004-06. We also learn that Gardner’s trial with the Sounders is partly a result of a close relationship between Schmid and RailHawks coach Martin Rennie, and that Schmid “respects” the Scotsman’s opinion of players.
According to the dispatch by José Miguel Romero, Gardner is on a two-year contract with the RailHawks and expects to return to North Carolina should he not win a place with the Sounders. With his left foot and pace, he should enjoy a good hard look by the Sounders. For the RailHawks in 2009, Gardner saw action in 20 games and notched three assists.
Item No. 2: A few days ago we noted the retirement of defender Jeremy Tolleson, who decided to pursue Christian mission work in Honduras. This morning, we learned a bit more about his new calling: He will be working with an outfit called The Micah Project to assist boys off the street in Tegucigalpa, the country’s capital and one of the more impoverished cities in the Western hemisphere (readers of soccer writer Grant Wahl will recall that he was mugged in that city at gunpoint in broad daylight last October). In this post on The Micah Project’s blog, Tolleson gets a mention.
UPDATE 1:27 p.m. Make it three items of tidbittery: Ex-RailHawk Santiago Fusilier, who failed to secure a place on Martin Rennie’s team last year, has landed a job with Crystal Palace Baltimore.

Well, there are only four players listed on the RailHawks roster who remain from the 2008 edition—assuming that reports of Steven Curfman’s exit are accurate.
But that doesn’t mean life doesn’t go on for departed players.
Today, the USL-2 powerhouse Charlotte Eagles announced the signings of Chris Lemons and Jacob Coggins. Lemons, a midfielder, appeared in 21 games for the ’Hawks last year, while forward Coggins scored once in 10 league appearances (but only 208 minutes).
Both players are returning to a program where they achieved great success. Coggins was a two-time USL-2 MVP with the Eagles and won the league scoring title three years out of four. Last Friday, March 27, the Eagles began their preseason schedule with a 3:1 victory over the Cleveland City Stars; Coggins opened the scoring in the fifth minute.
In addition to a three-year stint with the Eagles, we notice that Chris Lemons’ career peregrinations include playing in 19 games for Martin Rennie’s Cleveland City Stars in 2007 before signing with the RailHawks in 2008.
The Charlotte Eagles announcement is here.
And, Triangle Offense contacted Santiago Fusilier, who parted ways with the RailHawks last week. He reports that he’s been training these past few days with the Charleston Battery, a team that’s the new home of former RailHawks captain Frankie Sanfilippo.

Midfielder and free-kick specialist Steven Curfman has parted ways with the RailHawks, according to Mike Blake of the N&O’s SWakeSports blog. Although Curfman’s name is still on the roster as of 7 p.m., Blake’s sources assure him that the one-year veteran and Wake Forest grad has been dropped from the squad.
It’s not a surprising development in light of Curfman’s scarcity on the pitch thus far this preseason and the continuing surplus of players still on trial. However, combined with the departure of Santiago Fusilier, the RailHawks have now cut off nearly all of their hometown links. Only Raleigh native and UNC grad Caleb Norkus remains of the Old North State contingent.
Curfman, who had a stellar career at Wake Forest, scored two goals in 30 appearances last year.

Santiago Fusilier, the tough, tenacious Argentine winger who provided more than his share of highlights on last year’s sluggish team, has dropped off the RailHawks roster.
His departure comes in a week when the team announced the signings of two veteran performers, Sierra Leone international Mustapha Sama and Turks and Caicos Island international Gavin Glinton. (Glinton, however, has a green card, which means his presence on the roster doesn’t count against the league limit of seven international players. The RailHawks presently have six internationals. See comment thread here.)
A spokesman for the team declined to comment on Fusilier. Continue reading »

Josh Gardner, in undated picture
The RailHawks announced today the signing of 26-year-old midfielder Josh Gardner, a veteran of three journeyman seasons with the Los Angeles Galaxy and two considerably more productive seasons with the Seattle Sounders. With the latter squad over the last two seasons, Gardner scored 7 goals in 52 appearances, playing on the left side.
We asked the RailHawks if there are any updates on last year’s midfield mainstays of Matt Watson, Martin Nuñez and Santiago Fusilier and were told to “stay tuned.”
Here’s Gardner’s stats, copied from his wikipedia page.

Martin Rennie, with publicist Marco Rosa (left) and owner Brian Wellman
The Carolina RailHawks announced Scotsman Martin Rennie as the team’s new head coach. Rennie comes to the Railhawks from the Cleveland City Stars of the USL’s Second Division. At Cleveland, Rennie compiled an impressive record, taking the Stars to the USL-2 semi-finals in his first year and winning the league in his second year. This is clearly a coach who knows how to develop and implement functional tactical systems. Rennie is also noted for his ability to maximize player potential. A high percentage of his acolytes went directly into the MLS or foreign professional leagues following their stint in Cleveland.
Rennie comes to Cary with Europe’s highest coaching qualification: the UEFA “A” license. This is an unusual accomplishment for someone who has yet to begin plucking grey hairs before press conferences. Rennie also carries the UEFA youth license, which will be a huge asset in identifying and developing local talent to bring through the RailHawks’ fledgling development system. He has significant connections with professional teams in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean and suggested that he will immediately look to add to the international character of the RailHawks’ squad.
During today’s well-attended press conference, RailHawks owner and president Brian Wellman identified the synergy between the RailHawks organization and Rennie saying “we are here to deepen our roots in the community, promote a family-friendly soccer environment, and put a championship team on the field. Martin will bring us consistency, a winning attitude, and a proven track record of success.” Wellman was also very clear that the RailHawks are not content to just compete in USL-1 but will continue to bring in top Mexican and MLS teams, and will target the new CONCACAF Champions League which would bring meaningful (and lucrative) international competition to WakeMed Soccer park. Prior to last Saturday’s home finale, the Carolina RailHawks announced their team awards, citing five players for excellence during a rocky season that nonetheless ended with a 5-2-1 record over its last eight games, good for 16 points.
Probably the biggest surprise was the choice for Most Valuable Player: midfielder Matt Watson. Continue reading »

A light but compact crowd gathered at Bull McCabe’s in Durham on Friday night to watch the USL-1 Carolina RailHawks take on the Charleston Battery. It came as a surprise to some at the bar that such significant emotion could be generated for somthing that they did not heretofore know existed.
Yet, there it was, a handful of grown men screaming with arms raised when Matt Watson pulled the midfield lever that sent Hamed Diallo racing through to goal in the 8th minute. Continue reading »
