North Carolina gave its fans and its head coach stomach ulcers on Monday night, yet the Heels ultimately held off Rutgers at the Smith Center. The Heels and Scarlet Knights seesawed early, before UNC opened a margin of 17 points just shy of the midway point in the second half.
But Rutgers wasn’t quite ready to give up, and the Knights’ aggressive play combined with a series of silly mistakes by the Tar Heels enabled them to close the gap to a two-possession game.
And for the first time this season, freshman guard Dexter Strickland saved the day. Though he made some mistakes himself, Strickland made a couple of key drives and hit one crucial three-pointer from the corner — which Roy Williams later called a bad shot — that put distance between the Heels and their opponent.

PEARSON CAFETERIA/DURHAM Mose Rison said he had no idea how big homecoming is at an Historically Black College until he joined one’s staff as a football coach.
Rison was a highly touted running back during his playing days at Central Michigan, and had stints as an assistant coach at Navy, Rutgers, Stanford and Arizona before a short tenure at Livingstone in 2004 where he got a small taste of it.
Then when he joined Rod Broadway’s N.C. Central staff as N.C. Central’s offensive coordinator in 2006 before becoming head coach the next season, he got the full idea.
“At Central Michigan we had homecoming too, but we didn’t have near the festivities,” said Rison, whose 1-6 team will host 1-7 Central State (Ohio) in the Eagles’ homecoming contest Saturday at 1:30 at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. “I was told early on when I became head football coach that the North Carolina A&T game is big and the Winston-Salem State game is big, but homecoming may mean more than that.
“It’s an opportunity to showcase what we’ve been doing. We want them all to come back here and have a good feeling about what we’re doing with this football program. We want to play hard and come away with that second victory.”
Last season Rison’s team went 4-7, but was able to win that prescribed triumvirate of big games. This time, the Eagles have lost at A&T - 23-17 in overtime on Oct. 3 - and had two other close losses in between more convincing road defeats to superior opposition.
But the Eagles are coming off an open date following a 52-7 rout of Central Methodist, which came to Durham ranked No. 20 in the NAIA. CSU, a member of Division II’s Great Lakes Football Conference, lost 55-35 at NAIA member Ohio Dominican on Saturday. Continue reading »

After a relatively dormant month on the court, the post-Holiday Tar Heels were greeted by an exuberant crowd as they steamrolled Rutgers 97-75 on Sunday night. Nationally top-ranked UNC has won all 12 of its games by at least 15 points, a school record.
Power forward Tyler Hansbrough and point guard Ty Lawson continue to set the pace and arguably are the top two players at their respective positions in college basketball. Though he faces very stiff competition for national player of the year honors, Hansbrough clearly is playing at the All-American level (again). Against Rutgers he added 26 points and 10 rebounds — putting him at 1,000 for his career — while shooting 10-for-15 from the field.

Rutgers didn't do much celebrating
Lawson, meanwhile, remains a paragon of efficiency. He hit 8-for-12 from the field for 19 points, and he added another six assists without a single turnover.
Not for the first time this season, an opposing head coach had high praise for Roy Williams’ club:
“(UNC) is the best team that I’ve seen in my years of coaching,” said Rutgers coach Fred Hill. “Our goal was to play at a certain tempo, but obviously they are great at making you play at their speed.”
But while you can read about the power of this Carolina team just about anywhere, there are three emerging plotlines that need to be monitored closely in the coming weeks:

The surging Pack play Rutgers Monday, Dec. 29, in Birmingham, Ala. The school was allotted 10,000 tickets to sell and the N&O reported today that just under 3,000 have been sold.
No doubt it will become a tougher ticket as the date approaches, but why wait: The N.C. State athletic site has all the resources you need to plan your trip. And, if you can’t go, they’re suggesting that you purchase a ticket and donate it to the Big Brothers/ Big Sisters charity in Birmingham.
UNC fans, by the way, can purchase tickets here for the Tar Heels’ Saturday, Dec. 27 showdown with the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte.

One of the interesting things about sports is the unquantifiable nature of much of it. No matter how much sportswriters and analysts try to fit the entirety of a game into a box score, there are always things that can’t be measured. These things are often very important: They can comprise the “why” of winning and losing.
For instance, when North Carolina’s defense went limp in the second half of an important game against conference rivals Virginia Tech Saturday, there was no easily discernible reason behind it.

- Yowza. Is the Butch Davis plan working, or is Rutgers actually worse than they were before they were good before they were mediocre?
- I didn’t realize UNC only has 11 scholarship seniors…
- This game was even better for UNC than the final 44-12 score would suggest. For instance, Hakeem Nicks had two TDs, but they weren’t even his finest moments of the game. He made a fingertip catch in traffic early in the second that left Rutgers’ coaches barking at their players.
- It’s hard to draw too many conclusions about UNC without knowing whether or not Rutgers sucks quite as badly as they seem to suck.
