Mudcats to expand radio coverage; GM Kremer says sales looking up this year

Mike Potter · 4 Dec 2009, 5:12 PM · Comment

catkinasFIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON The Carolina Mudcats are doing a little outsourcing.

Don’t worry. They’re not taking any jobs out of the country.

But the club has sold its broadcast rights to Play-by-Play Sports Properties, LLC, of which veteran play-by-play man Patrick Kinas is president, and will also be picking up another radio station on its network.

Kinas (pictured), joined by company chairman Joe Bourdow and Mudcats general manager Joe Kremer, made the announcement at a press conference in the home clubhouse at the park.

The main aspect that will affect listeners is the addition of WDWG-FM 98.5 out of Rocky Mount as a co-flagship with Raleigh’s WDOX 570.

“As far as I know, this is the only minor-league team in the country that has agreed to license its broadcast,” Kinas said. “The bottom line is we’re all about the success of the Mudcats. What we bring to the table is that we’ll bring the Mudcats back to where they were a few years ago coverage-wise, and the bottom line is getting more people to this great stadium and watching the Reds’ players here.

“We’ve essentially quadrupled our coverage range. You can drive basically an hour and a half on I-95 and not lose our signal. That’s about 2/3 of a game, if you’re going the speed limit. Last year, you couldn’t even hear our games in our ballpark (without tuning in to Kinas’ 0.1-watt in-house FM broadcast.)” Continue reading »

Bell, Jackson return to Mudcats for 2010

Mike Potter · 13 Nov 2009, 7:06 PM · Comment

catsbell1Manager David Bell (left) and hitting coach Ryan Jackson (bottom right) will be back with the Carolina Mudcats next season, the Cincinnati Reds organization has announced.

Tom Brown, who was with Class A Sarasota each of the past three seasons, will be the new pitching coach replacing Rigo Beltran. Jimmy Mattocks will return as athletic trainer.

Bell, 37, took the Mudcats to a 65-74 record and within one win of a first-half title in the Southern League’s North Division in his first year as a skipper.

Jackson, a 37-year-old Duke alumnus who is a former Durham Bull, will be back for his second season with the club.rjackson

Brown, 60, has eight seasons’ experience as a Triple-A pitching coach.

Mattocks, 27, is in his fifth year with the Reds’ organization and third at the Double-A level.

The Mudcats will open on the road April 8 at Birmingham, later hosting the Montgomery Biscuits in the Five County Stadium opener on April 14.

Yonder go the Mudcats, winning their third straight

Mike Potter · 2 Sep 2009, 12:24 AM · Comment

catalonzoDid nobody tell the Carolina Mudcats they were eliminated from the pennant race?

At any rate, they sure aren’t acting like it.

Yonder Alonzo (pictured) had three hits including a double and three RBI, leading the Mudcats to their third straight win as they defeated the homestanding Montgomery Biscuits 6-4 Tuesday night.

The star of the night, though, was Carolina’s starting pitcher Jeremy Horst (1-3), who carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before former Durham Bull Chris Nowak broke it up.

Carolina’s big inning was in the third, when the Mudcats batted around with four runs on five hits and three Montgomery errors to drop the loss on Brian Baker (5-6).

The Mudcats have an off-day today before opening their final five-game homestand, all against the Mississippi Braves, Thursday at 7:15 p.m. at Five County Stadium.

Gwinnett Braves sink Durham Bulls: Meteorology

Adam Sobsey · 1 Sep 2009, 5:00 AM · 1 Comment

DBAP/ DURHAM—The weather changed abruptly yesterday. At game time Sunday we were still in the sweaty languor of late summer, but the heat and sun fell out of the sky overnight. The season that replaced them on Monday wasn’t so much autumnal as alien—as if the primer-gray clouds, the unsettled breeze and the melancholy dampness had been imported from a British Isle, or Soviet-bloc Europe.

And the Bulls’ meteorology changed, too, with the same suddenness. Not only did their seven-game winning-streak come to an ugly end in a sluggish, poorly-played (by both teams) 8-6 loss to Gwinnett, but the date, August 31, marked the beginning of Bull-poaching season. Five players—a full rundown of them below (well, almost full; you’ll see)—left the DBAP for Tampa Bay after last night’s loss. It was less meteorology that hit the Bulls’ clubhouse than a meteor, which decimated the squad. Or, put another way, if September has come to take the sun and heat out of the sky, then its accompanying major-league roster expansion has swiped some of the stars, too.

And that’s not all. Two more Bulls, Jason Childers and Jon Weber, are off to join Team USA for the Baseball World Cup, to be played in Europe later this month. (Why doesn’t the IBAF schedule this tournament two weeks later? Then the minor-league season would be over, and none of the players on Team USA—all of whom are in Double-A and Triple-A—would have to miss the playoffs.) Childers and Weber have been near the front of the Bulls’ charge to the brink of the post-season—the Bulls have a one-game lead in the IL South Division, and a 4.5 game lead in the wild card race with seven left to play—but they won’t be here to help push the team across the threshold.

More’s the pity, because both of those stalwarts had a chance to help the Bulls notch one more victory last night, and both came up short. How that happened, and what happens next to the Bulls, follows.

Mudcats shake road woes, pitch two shutouts in one night

Mike Potter · 1 Sep 2009, 1:56 AM · Comment

catssmitIt’s too bad for the Carolina Mudcats they didn’t have a doubleheader like this a month ago, when it could have helped them in the pennant race.

Two shutouts in one night.

Alexander Smit (pictured) and Joe Krebs each started shutout wins as the Mudcats beat the homestanding Montgomery Biscuits 1-0 and 5-0 on Monday night.

Smit (4-3) pitched six innings in the Game 1 win while Sean Watson came on for the seventh for his sixth save.

Carolina scored the run in the third, on a Jose Castro single that scored Jake Long.

In the nightcap, the Mudcats scored three runs in the third off Alex Torres (0-1) on a Yonder Alonso single followed by Zack Cozart’s two-run homer and never looked back.

Zach Ward (1-4) picked up the win.

Carolina had two transactions on Monday, as infielder Eric Eymann was sent down from Triple-A Louisville, while infielder Justin Tordi has been sent down to Sarasota.

Carolina plays its final road game of the season tonight at 8:05, with Jeremy Horst (0-3, 9.20) on the hill. The Mudcats return home Thursday night for the opener of a five-game set against the Mississippi Braves.

The Carolina Mudcats’ scheduled game against the Montgomery Biscuits, the third of a five-game set, has been postponed and will be made up as part of a doubleheader Monday night at 7:05 (EDT).

The Mudcats had two transactions on Sunday, both involving right-handed pitchers.

Carolina’s final homestand of the season, another five-game set, begins on Thursday with the Mississippi Braves providing the opposition.

Perry, Montgomery keep Mudcats in doldrums

montperrThe Carolina Mudcats’ road doldrums continued at Montgomery, as the Biscuits rolled to an 8-1 win in Game 2 of their five-game set.

Jason Perry (pictured) hit a three-run homer while Matt Spring added a three-run double for the winners.

Ryan Morse (4-6) was the winning pitcher while Jerry Gil (2-4) took the loss as the Mudcats dropped their third straight.

Carolina got its only run on a bases-loaded walk to Zack Cozart in the third inning. Jose Castro singled twice in the Mudcats’ five-hit attack.

The series continues Sunday at 3:05 p.m., with Camilo Vazquez (5-4, 5.29) going for Carolina against southpaw Brandon Mann (6-8, 4.30).

Late bobbles cost Mudcats a road win at Montgomery

Mike Potter · 29 Aug 2009, 1:04 AM · Comment

catcumbeLuis Montano had his best Double-A start Friday night, but a couple of unearned runs unraveled it in the seventh inning.

And the Montgomery Biscuits scored all three of their runs in the seventh to claim a 3-1 victory over Carolina.

Montano (0-6) was pitching a two-hitter through six innings before the Biscuits put together their good-luck rally.

Carolina got a go-ahead run on base in the ninth before Matt Gorgen closed out the save.

Aneury Rodriguez (9-10) won his fifth straight decision for Montgomery.

Shaun Cumberland (pictured) scored Carolina’s only run on a Logan Parker grounder in the second.

Jerry Gil (2-3, 9.39) will start Game 2 of the five-game set for Carolina tonight at 8:05 against Ryan Morse (3-6, 5.26).

Smit’s hot start for naught as Tennessee comeback foils Mudcats

Mike Potter · 26 Aug 2009, 11:20 PM · Comment

catssmit1FIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON It’s the finale of the Carolina Mudcats’ five-game homestand against the Tennessee Smokies and there’s no reason for the Mudcats not to relax.

Earlier today a West Tenn Diamond Jaxx victory made the inevitable official. The Mudcats, who came within one game of the first-half North Division title, are not going to be in the Southern League playoffs.

For Tennessee it’s a very big game, as there is still a three-way race among the Volunteer State teams for the division title.

Carolina continues to feed its best players to Triple-A Louisville, with veteran southpaw Tom Cochran the latest to head for a probable Governors’ Cup Playoff team.

There’s a college night promotion going on, and fans and Mudcats employees are wearing logo clothing for either their alma mater or the school they root for.

The players get in on the action, too, as the college alumni are greeted by their school’s fight songs when they come to bat and everybody who didn’t go to college gets assigned one.

Let’s get some chicken tenders and start this pitchers’ duel, which finishes in a 2-1 comeback victory for the visitors.

It’s a good one from the start, with the World Cup-bound Dutchman Alexander Smit (pictured) on the mound for Carolina against Casey Coleman. Continue reading »

Smit gets a journalistic visitor and impresses fans on two continents

Mike Potter · 16 Aug 2009, 6:29 PM · 3 Comments

catssmitFIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON It’s the finale of the Carolina Mudcats’ homestand and the last time they’ll play the Birmingham Barons this season unless a 100-year miracle gets the home team a playoff berth.

It’s a hot, cloudy afternoon, but at least the Mudcats have room for some optimism since they were finally able to beat the league’s best team last night.

And they need wins badly, as they enter today’s action with a “tragic number” of 13 for elimination from the Southern League’s North Division race.

There’s not going to be much of a crowd, though there’s an interesting addition to the press box. On hand for the past two games to write a story for hometown paper back in The Netherlands is Frank Vonken, who introduces himself to everyone as “Frank from Holland.” Frank, who says he speaks five languages (”We’re not worthy!”) is on hand to cover Alex Smit (pictured), the big lefty from Eindhoven who is back in the lineup after recovering from a sore back.

The trip turns out to be a productive one for our friend Frank, as Smit - whose accent is now barely discernable - allows two runs on two hits in seven innings to pick up the decision in a 4-3 victory. Continue reading »
