“Hello Roy Williams, goodbye Butch Davis.”  At least, that’s what UNC fans seem to be pondering this week as the Heels play what needs to be a morale booster against Georgia Southern.

Although UNC must win for reputation sake, this game carries no postseason importance.  The Heels can only count one win against an FCS team for the six-win bowl requirement.

Sleeping on the Eagles will be dangerous, though.  With 14 returning starters and nothing to lose, the pressure will be entirely on the Carolina low-octane offense.  One thing is for sure; panic will ensue if the Heels lose and fall to 3-3.

Postgame report and audio: Heels blast Bulldogs 40-6

Jacob Swiger · 5 Sep 2009, 11:17 PM · Comment

Kenan Memorial Stadium/Chapel Hill -- UNC got off to a slow start but eventually clobbered FCS opponent The Citadel 40-6.

The Tar Heels, led by Shaun Draughn’s 118 yards on the ground, ran over the Bulldogs with 261 yards rushing, the most rushing yards in the Butch Davis era and the most since the Duke game in 2004.

“It didn’t even feel like I had that many yards,” Draughn said after the game.

Backup running  back Ryan Houston added 45 yards on six carries and scored two touchdowns on the ground.  Houston provided tough inside running to complement  Draugn’s speed and appears to have improved his own speed this offseason.

UNC’s Sexton Opts to Graduate

Redshirt junior quarterback Cameron Sexton has decided to graduate at the end of this semester and possibly transfer to a Division II school for his final year of eligibility.

“I have always been a competitor and I have more goals I want to accomplish on the football field,” Sexton said in a statement released Wednesday. “I’ll always be grateful for the opportunities I had at North Carolina.”

Sexton entered the season third on the depth chart behind sophomore starter T.J. Yates and the much-heralded freshman Mike Paulus.

Yet Sexton ended up splitting time with Paulus after Yates went down due to injury and Paulus struggled against Virginia Tech and Miami.

Sexton had a breakout performance against Miami, throwing for 242 yards and two touchdowns.

Yates Starting Against Duke

Jacob Swiger · 27 Nov 2008, 11:44 AM · Comment

UNC-Chapel Hill’s T.J. Yates will get the nod at the quarterback position Saturday against Duke, according to Tarheelblue.com.

“Our expectations are to start T.J.,” Butch Davis said. “Both of them (T.J. and Cameron) have done good these last two days and I expect him to play well Saturday.”

Yates started against NC State Nov. 22 only to suffer the Heels’ worst loss of the season.

Davis said that Yates’ starting experience gives him the edge. Cameron Sexton, who began the season as the third-string quarterback, started in six out of the seven games played after Yates went down with a broken ankle.

Mike Paulus started the first game against Miami when Yates was injured, but Sexton played most of the game.

The Heels enter the contest against Duke desperate for a win after dropping their last two games to Maryland and NC State. UNC needed only to win their last three games to win the Coastal Division.

Savior Sexton?

Until the second half of last week’s game against Virginia Tech, it looked like the Tar Heels had a good season going. Not a national championship season, but the kind of season that can reasonably be called progress, and might even include a shot at having some fun in the ACC title race. Then quarterback TJ Yates went down with a broken ankle, consigned to the sidelines for six weeks.

Even though Yates isn’t on anyone’s Heisman list, the injury was a boot to the groin of UNC’s offense.

UNC, NC State lose QBs to injury

David Fellerath · 22 Sep 2008, 3:36 PM · Comment

Bad day at the infirmary for both N.C. State and UNC, although the news is much worse for the ’Heels.

First, Wolfpack QB Russell Wilson, who has already missed a game due to a Grade 3 concussion, will miss this Saturday’s matchup against South Florida, as will linebacker and leading tackler Nate Irving. Both players are out indefinitely, and coach Tom O’Brien won’t comment specifically on Wilson’s injury.

Second, UNC QB TJ Yates, who left Saturday’s game against Virginia Tech with an ankle injury, will miss at least six weeks.

The situation is more fraught for the ’Heels, given the ineffective performance of Mike Paulus in relief of Yates. The ’Pack, on the other hand, will turn to Harrison Beck, a proven backup who was a steady field general in Wilson’s place against William & Mary a couple of weeks back.

The N&O has video of Yates discussing his injury.

UNC vs. Virginia Tech: The wrong kind of “statement game”

Forrest Norman · 20 Sep 2008, 7:46 PM · Comment

One of the interesting things about sports is the unquantifiable nature of much of it. No matter how much sportswriters and analysts try to fit the entirety of a game into a box score, there are always things that can’t be measured. These things are often very important: They can comprise the “why” of winning and losing.

For instance, when North Carolina’s defense went limp in the second half of an important game against conference rivals Virginia Tech Saturday, there was no easily discernible reason behind it.
