Durham Bulls lose at Louisville: kno exkuses, ‘k?

Adam Sobsey · 20 Jul 2009, 4:00 AM · 3 Comments

17kIf you were feeling uncharitable, you could pin the Bulls’ 7-6, 13-inning loss at Louisville last night on catcher John Jaso: he struck out four times (the Bulls K’d 17 times overall), the last in the 12th inning against Bats’ infielder Michael Griffin, who had been sent to the mound to pitch in emergency relief. Worse, Jaso struck out looking against the non-pitcher, with the go-ahead run on second base; he didn’t even go down swinging. An inning later, Jaso allowed the winning run to score when former Bull Wes Bankston bulled into him on a play at the plate, knocking the ball loose from Jaso’s glove.

But if you’re feeling avaricious—or, to look at it more generously, if you’re handing out leaflets of blame free of charge at the corner of Bull and Blog—why stop at Jaso’s shortcomings? Continue reading »

Wood shines again, but Mudcats can’t hold on against Lookouts

Mike Potter · 4 Jul 2009, 12:27 AM · Comment

catswoodTravis Wood (pictured) kept up his string of stellar starts for the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night, but after the Chattanooga Lookouts got to the Mudcats’ bullpen they found enough offense to win.

The Lookouts got to Ruben Medina (1-4) for two runs in the seventh, holding on for a 4-3 victory at sold-out AT&T Field to take the current series 4 games to 2.

Wood, who has eight victories and four no-decisions in his last 12 starts, pitched six innings and gave up one earned run with another unearned.

The Mudcats scored two early runs as Todd Frazier scored from third on a balk to tie the score in the second and Jose Castro smacked an RBI triple to knot it at 2-2 in the third.

Chattanooga scratched out two in the seventh off Medina, with a hit batsman and a run-scoring passed ball during the rally. Ramon Nivar’s infield hit to third put the Lookouts up 4-2.

In the ninth, Frazier reached on a bunt single and scored on Carson Kainer’s one-out single to left before Matthew Sartor ended the game by striking out the final two Mudcats batters.

Carolina had four transactions on Friday. Outfielder Michael Griffin was promoted to Louisville, while right-hander Matthew Klinker has come back from Sarasota and utility man Steven Chapman has been promoted from Sarasota. Right-hander Jordan Smith has been placed on the seven-day DL with a strained right elbow.

Carolina returns home tonight at 7:15 for the opener of a four-game series against the Tennessee Smokies, with southpaw Camilo Vazquez (2-1, 5.91) on the hill. A full house is expected for the game, which will followed by a big fireworks show.

Lookouts’ Perez slugs Mudcats in 4-2 win

Mike Potter · 1 Jul 2009, 12:42 AM · Comment

griffinEddy Perez was too much for the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday night,  leading the Chattanooga Lookouts to a 4-2 win at AT&T Field.

Perez had two hits and three RBI including his fourth homer of the year for the Lookouts, who lead the current six-game series 2 wins to 1.

Carolina scratched out a run in the second before Perez’ two-run shot in the bottom of the frame gave the hosts a 2-1 lead.

The Mudcats didn’t get a hit off starter Alberto Bastardo until the sixth, when Michael Griffin (pictured) stroked a leadoff double to left. Zack Cozart’s sac fly later tied the score at 2-2, but Chattanooga scored twice in the bottom of the frame including Perez’ RBI single to end the scoring.

Tom Cochran (1-1) worked 5 1/3 innings in the loss, allowing five hits and four earned runs. Kendy Batista (4-0) got the win in relief.

Carolina had two transactions on Tuesday, when left-hander Steve Otterness was returned to Dayton while Chris Kelly came off the disabled list.

Carolina’s Lee Tabor (0-0, 3.68) will make a spot start against fellow lefty James Adkins (2-6, 5.19) in today’s 11:15 a.m. affair.

Defense helps Mudcats end slide

Mike Potter · 30 Jun 2009, 1:02 AM · Comment

griffinFinally.

Michael Griffin (picured) had two hits including a homer, Juan Francisco added three hits including a double with an RBI, and six Carolina Mudcats had extra-base hits Monday night in a 7-6 road win over the Chattanooga Lookouts.

The result ended Carolina’s five-game losing streak.

Steven Otterness, who was just called up from Dayton as Dallas Buck went on the DL with a sore arm, was the winning pitcher in relief.

But the big plays came on defense in the ninth, as two Lookouts were tagged out at the plate trying to score the tying run.

In the Chattanoooga ninth, Ramon Nivar led off with a double. Josh Bell then singled down the left-field line, but Todd Frazier cut off the hit and gunned down the lead runner.

After a wild pitch, catcher Brian Peterson blocked a pitch that headed up the first-base line. Bell tried to score on the play, but pitcher Logan Ondrusek caught Peterson’s toss and tagged him out.

Andrew Lambo grounded to second baseman Jose Castro to end the game.

Mudcats fall to Suns again, depart on a very long bus ride

Mike Potter · 27 Jun 2009, 10:50 PM · Comment

noodlesFIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON It’s the finale of a long six-game series between the Carolina Mudcats and the Jacksonville Suns, and the homeboys are badly in need of a win.

The Mudcats lost the first-half championship of the Southern League’s North Division by one game to the Huntsville Stars, but with one game left in the series with the Suns Carolina is in last place in the division and on a three-game losing streak.

It’s Day One without center fielder and Major League Futures Game-bound Chris Heisey, and “Myron Noodleman” (pictured) is in the house to entertain.

Michael Griffin is down from Louisville to replace Heisey, and Juan Francisco is off the disabled list after nursing his pulled hamstring.

I’ll just go ahead and let you know it’s a looooong night for the Mudcats, as they take on a team half-full of guys who were Mudcats last season before Carolina switched affiliations from the Florida Marlins to the Cincinnati Reds and lose 9-0.
