Mudcats drop series opener as Lookouts fire a shutout

Mike Potter · 27 Jul 2009, 11:46 PM · Comment

chagodwiFIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON It’s Game 1 of the Carolina Mudcats’ series with the Chattanooga Lookouts, and the first time I’ve been able to make it out here in 20 days.

I had scheduled a multi-day event with some extended family to coincide with a hole in the Durham Bulls schedule before I was shown the door by the Incredible Shrinking Herald-Sun in May, so I was away for the whole series the last time Chattanooga was here July 15-21.

Chattanooga won that series, although the Mudcats won the final two games of the five-game set.

Incidentally, seems budget cuts are everywhere. There’s a new system for obtaining sodas that has been the talk of the press box. But at least they’re free, so if that’s the worst thing that happens to me for a while life is pretty OK.

Anyway, I’ll go with the Italian sausage tonight, fortunately the rains are holding off now and it’s game time.

There are a couple of local favorites on the visiting roster tonight. Duke alumnus Zach Schreiber, who was with the old Richmond Braves all last season, is in the Lookouts’ bullpen along with Tim Corcoran, who was a Mudcat most of last season and was with the Durham Bulls in 2004-05.

Chattanooga gets to Lee Tabor pretty quickly in the first inning, scoring two runs en route to its 3-0 victory. Adam Godwin (pictured) leads off with a single to left, advances on James Tomlin’s sacrifice bunt to first and scores on Andrew Lambo’s single to right. Josh Bell singles to left center and Lucas May hits a two-out single to right center before Juan Gonzalez draws the bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Continue reading »

Mudcats’ slide continues in slugfest loss

Mike Potter · 16 Jul 2009, 11:39 PM · Comment

franciscoThe Carolina Mudcats have been on a downhill slide for much of the second half so far, and tonight’s meeting with the Chattanooga Lookouts did nothing to change that.

Jesus Castillo allowed just four hits over seven innings, leaving the game with a 5-1 lead and watching his team hold on in a 10-6 victory over Carolina at Five County Stadium.

The contest, in the second game of their current five-game series, was Carolina’s third straight loss. The Mudcats are 7-15 in the half and currently in last place in the Southern League.

Juan Francisco (pictured) got the Mudcats on the board in the seventh with a solo homer, and Todd Frazier added his own solo shot in the eighth.

Shaun Cumberland and Logan Parker had two hits apiece for Carolina.

Matthew Klinker (3-1) gave up three homers in his first loss as a Mudcat.

Game 3 of the series is Friday night at 7:15, with Camilo Vazquez (2-1, 4.85) going against Chattanooga’s James Adkins (3-6, 5.11) in a battle of lefties.

Durbin, Lookouts blank Mudcats in opener of five-game series

cattaborJ.D. Durbin was nearly unhittable for eight innings, sparking the Chattanooga Lookouts to a 2-0 victory over the Carolina Mudcats in the opener of their five-game series at Five County Stadium.

Durbin (2-3) allowed just five hits while striking out three on a night neither he nor reliever Matt Sartor - who earned his eighth save - issued a walk.

Jose Castro had the only multi-hit game for the Mudcats, going 2-for-4.

Lee Tabor (pictured) had a good start for the Mudcats, pitching five shutout innings before Chris Kelly (0-1) allowed an unearned run in the sixth.

The series continues Thursday night at 7:15. Matthew Klinker (3-0, 1.00), who was the Southern League’s pitcher of the week, will start against Chattanooga’s Jesus Castillo (4-7, 4.71).

Pitching continues to dominate as Mudcats take a split

catklink2If you love pitchers’ duels, it’s too bad you probably haven’t been in Jacksonville, Fla., for the Carolina Mudcats’ last four games against the Suns.

Neither team scored three runs in a game in their series that just ended, and that pattern continued perfectly tonight in a doubleheader at The Baseball Grounds.

The Suns got just two hits - one in each game - in 13 innings, as the Mudcats won the opener 2-0 before dropping the nightcap 1-0.

Carolina is 7-13 in the second half while Jacksonville is 13-7.

Matthew Klinker (3-0) went six innings in the Mudcats’ win in the opener. All-Star selection Logan Ondrusek worked a perfect seventh to pick up the save.

Todd Frazier went 3-for-4 on the opener for Carolina, which gave Suns ace Cristhian Martinez (7-3) his first loss since May 4.

In the nightcap, Brad Stone (2-1) and two relievers combined on the three-hit shutout for Jacksonville.

Tom Cochran (1-3) took the loss, giving up one unearned run in the third inning.

The Mudcats now take a three-day All-Star Break before opening a five-game series on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium against the Chattanooga Lookouts.

Carolina’s Travis Wood has been named the starter on the mound for Monday night’s Southern League All-Star Game, while the Mudcats’ Frazier and shortstop Zack Cozart are also in the starting lineup with Ondruzek, James Avery and Jordan Smith in the bullpen.

Plunk! Mudcats drop extra-inning heartbreaker

Mike Potter · 11 Jul 2009, 12:19 AM · Comment

cathenryThe Carolina Mudcats played another nail-biter with the Jacksonville Suns Friday night, coming out on the short end in a very odd way.

Ramon Geronimo nailed Jacksonville hitter Mike Stanton in the back with the bases loaded and one out in the 10th, giving the homestanding Suns a 2-1 win at the Baseball Grounds.

With one out in the extra inning Lorenzo Scott singled, followed by a double from Ryan Klosterman. Geronimo issued an intentional walk to Logan Morrison, then plunked Stanton on a 1-1 offering to even the current series at one win each.

The Mudcats’ run came in the third, when a single from Sean Henry (pictured) scored Eric Eymann. Jacksonville tied the score in the bottom of that frame on an error from catcher Brian Peterson.

Matt Peterson (2-2) was the winning pitcher, while Geronimo dropped to 2-3.

The game was slowed by two rain delays totaling an hour and four minutes.

Carolina (6-12) and Jacksonville (12-6) will finish their current series with a 5:35 p.m. doubleheader tonight.

Matthew Klinker (2-0, 1.50) and Tom Cochran (1-2, 4.21) will start for the Mudcats.

Smoke is heavy on and above the field as Mudcats’ slide continues

tencolemFIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON It’s Game 2 of the Carolina Mudcats’ short four-game homestand against the Tennessee Smokies, and the home team is badly in need of a win.

Carolina, which finished just one game behind the Huntsville Stars for the first-half championship of the Southern League’s North Division, is in last place in the league through 13 games in the second half and things haven’t been looking up.

On Saturday night, in front of that SRO crowd drawn in by the July 4 fireworks, the Smokies scored all their runs in the last three innings to win 7-4. Tonight they’ll play an hour earlier at 6:15, with a crowd about half as large under cloudy skies but another fireworks show on the horizon.

Traffic getting out of the park on Saturday was a nightmare, but this time the East-to-West drive across Wake county should be smooth - unless somebody decides that Sunday night when so many are headed to the state’s most populated areas from the beaches is a good time to work on U.S. 64.

Grab a pregame cheeseburger and we’re ready to go.

And right off the bat - literally - things don’t go well for the homeboys in a game they eventually lose 6-0.

Tennessee, which had lost all five games here in the first half, puts up a three-spot in the first. Nathan Samson draws a leadoff walk before Tyler Colvin deposits lefty Tom Cochran’s next pitch over the right-field wall to make it 2-0. Marquez Smith then reaches on a two-base error off the glove of left fielder Todd Frazier, and scores on a one-out double to left from James Adduci.

Casey Coleman (pictured) is sailing along for the visitors, giving up just one hit and a walk over the first four innings. Continue reading »

Wood shines again, but Mudcats can’t hold on against Lookouts

Mike Potter · 4 Jul 2009, 12:27 AM · Comment

catswoodTravis Wood (pictured) kept up his string of stellar starts for the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night, but after the Chattanooga Lookouts got to the Mudcats’ bullpen they found enough offense to win.

The Lookouts got to Ruben Medina (1-4) for two runs in the seventh, holding on for a 4-3 victory at sold-out AT&T Field to take the current series 4 games to 2.

Wood, who has eight victories and four no-decisions in his last 12 starts, pitched six innings and gave up one earned run with another unearned.

The Mudcats scored two early runs as Todd Frazier scored from third on a balk to tie the score in the second and Jose Castro smacked an RBI triple to knot it at 2-2 in the third.

Chattanooga scratched out two in the seventh off Medina, with a hit batsman and a run-scoring passed ball during the rally. Ramon Nivar’s infield hit to third put the Lookouts up 4-2.

In the ninth, Frazier reached on a bunt single and scored on Carson Kainer’s one-out single to left before Matthew Sartor ended the game by striking out the final two Mudcats batters.

Carolina had four transactions on Friday. Outfielder Michael Griffin was promoted to Louisville, while right-hander Matthew Klinker has come back from Sarasota and utility man Steven Chapman has been promoted from Sarasota. Right-hander Jordan Smith has been placed on the seven-day DL with a strained right elbow.

Carolina returns home tonight at 7:15 for the opener of a four-game series against the Tennessee Smokies, with southpaw Camilo Vazquez (2-1, 5.91) on the hill. A full house is expected for the game, which will followed by a big fireworks show.
