Gartrell, Wolfpack come back to top BC, get another shot at Duke

Mike Potter · 6 Mar 2010, 8:05 PM · Comment

ncsugartGREENSBORO COLISEUM Somebody wants to write a Cinderella story out of the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament this season, and the candidate is going to come out of this second semifinal game.

Waiting in tomorrow’s 1 p.m. title contest will be No. 8 Duke, which has played in the last two conference finals and knows exactly what the finals are all about.

Those candidates for the glass slipper are No. 6 seed N.C. State, a team common wisdom says is headed for the NCAA Tournament no matter what happens today, and No. 7 seed Boston College, which just needs to keep winning unless it plans to head to one of the two post-season consolation tournaments.

BC is coming off a very big upset over No. 2 seed Florida State, while the Wolfpack is coming off an impressive although probably less shocking conquest of No. 3 seed Virginia.

It’s the 33rd edition of the tournament, and never have No. 6 and No. 7 seeds squared off in the semifinals.

The regular season results don’t offer much predictive help, as the Eagles rolled 83-66 on Jan. 10 in Chestnut Hill and the Wolfpack got revenge 74-63 on Feb. 21 at Reynolds Coliseum.

And as is obvious, it’s a matchup between Eagle size and Wolfpack speed with State holding on to win 63-57. Continue reading »

Balanced Pack wins on Senior Day

Mike Potter · 28 Feb 2010, 6:33 PM · Comment

ncsukast2Talk about a balanced effort.

N.C. State didn’t put anyone in double figures, but the Wolfpack upset No. 22 Georgia Tech 54-46 to win its Senior Day women’s basketball game at Reynolds Coliseum.

It was the first win of the season against a ranked team for the Wolfpack (17-13, 7-7 ACC), which earned the No. 6 seed for the ACC Tournament and will take on Clemson in the first round on Thursday night at 8.

Brittany Strachan hit a clinching 3-pointer for the Wolfpack.

Sharnise Beal and Inga Muciniece joined fellow seniors Lucy Ellison and Nikitta Gartrell in the starting lineup for the first time this season for State, which got nine points from Marissa Kastanek (pictured) and eight from Bonae Holston.

Brigitte Ardossi had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Tech (22-8, 8-6), while Alex Montgomery added 11.

Women’s roundup: Duke at UNC while Wolfpack hosts Georgia Tech

Mike Potter · 28 Feb 2010, 12:01 AM · Comment

mccallieIt’s the final day of ACC women’s basketball before the tournament starts in Greensboro four days from now.

All three Triangle teams are, well, in the Triangle on a very big day for all involved.

It has been a long time since UNC has still been fighting for an NCAA berth in late February, but that’s the case for a Tar Heel team that has lost seven of its last eight games.

The Tar Heels will host No. 6 Duke today at 3 p.m. at Carmichael Arena in a game to be shown live nationally on the Fox Sports cable channels, and an upset of the Blue Devils on Senior Day might be just what Sylvia Hatchell’s club needs to nail down a bid.

That won’t be an easy task, as Duke routed the Tar Heels 79-51 on Feb. 8 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. In its third season under Joanne P. McCallie (pictured), the Blue Devils have already clinched an ACC regular season championship and want to keep making the case for a No. 1 seed going into the NCAA Tournament.

Today will be the final home game before the tournament for Tar Heel seniors Trinity Bursey and Martina Wood.

An hour before that one starts N.C. State, which has been one of the surprises of the ACC in its first season under Kellie Harper, will look for an upset over visiting No. 22 Georgia Tech in the Senior Day game for Nikitta Gartrell, Lucy Ellison, Sharnise Beal and Inga Muciniece.

State’s only home ACC loss this season has been to UNC.

There are six games on today’s ACC slate, and the only seeds already set for the tournament are Duke at No. 1 and Florida State at No. 2. Georgia Tech is also guaranteed a bye into the quarterfinals. Continue reading »

White, Kastanek pace Wolfpack to ‘Hoops 4 Hope’ win over Miami

ncsuwhitREYNOLDS COLISEUM/RALEIGH N.C. State needs some victories to keep alive a shot at a winning season in women’s basketball.

Today, the Wolfpack will have plenty of support in that quest.

The ESPN2 contest against Miami is NCSU’s annual “Hoops 4 Hope” game, with the Wolfpack and most of the fans in the house wearing pink in support of breast cancer awareness and research and of course in memory of the late coach Kay Yow.

It’s a battle for position in the ACC, as State (13-11, 3-6 ACC) and Miami (16-8, 3-6) are tied for ninth place.

State is pretty much dressed in pink from head to toe. Miami, wearing its normal home whites for the road game, is wearing pink shoes and socks with plenty of pink headbands. And 6,452 look on as the Wolfpack gets an emotional 66-64 victory.

Miami leads 35-29 at halftime despite 10 points from Amber White. The Hurricanes shoot 43.8 percent in the first half to State’s 31.0. Continue reading »

ncsuelliN.C. State will try to end its two-game women’s basketball losing streak today when the Wolfpack visits Clemson.

Kellie Harper’s club, which has lost four of its last five games, has not had a three-game losing streak this season.

Clemson, coached by NCSU alumna Cristy McKinney, is coming off a big 68-65 win Friday night over visiting Boston College, the Tigers’ first ACC victory this season.

The Wolfpack has won two straight at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Wolfpack comes up short at FSU

Mike Potter · 17 Jan 2010, 6:33 PM · Comment

ncsukast1N.C. State led most of the way and finished with four players in double figures, but the Wolfpack ended up on the short end of a 74-71 score at No. 16 Florida State.

Cierra Bravard hit a layup and a free throw over the final 11 seconds to give the Seminoles (16-3, 3-1 ACC) the victory.

NCSU (11-7, 1-2 ACC) had a chance to tie, but Christian Hunnicut intercepted a pass at midcourt to preserve the result.

Marissa Kastanek (pictured) led the Wolfpack with 18 points, followed by Nikitta Gartrell with 17 and Lucy Ellison and Amber White with 10 each.

Alysha Harvin led FSU with 21 points, followed by Bravard’s and Courtney Ward and Angel Gray with 11 each.

The Wolfpack’s next game is at home on Thursday night against Wake Forest.

Women’s roundup: UNC hosts streaking Bulldogs while NCSU visits S. Carolina

Mike Potter · 13 Dec 2009, 12:01 AM · Comment

uncdegraUNC will host Gardner-Webb, a member of the Big South Conference, while N.C. State will travel to South Carolina.

Guess which women’s basketball team might have a tougher assignment today?

The No. 11 Tar Heels will host the Runnin’ Bulldogs today at 3 in the Smith Center. And they’ll be taking on one of the hottest teams in the region. Rick Reeves’ club is on a school-record eight-game winning streak, has five players averaging in double figures and is led by 6-6 center Sandra Vaitkute.

UNC will counter with one of the nation’s best backcourts, with Cetera DeGraffenreid (pictured) leading the show at the point.

N.C. State will be on the road against the Gamecocks, who beat the Wolfpack 56-55 last season in Raleigh. It’s another big test for the team under first-year coach Kellie Harper, as every non-conference win is important to get State back into post-season play after a one-year absence. Continue reading »

acclogopToday is going to be a very big day for ACC women’s basketball.

All three of the conference’s teams in the Triangle have home games with serious non-conference opposition today. This time, N.C. Central is part of the mix as well.

The Eagles (0-6) will start the action when they visit Virginia Tech (4-3) - led by Northern Durham alumna Utahya Drye - for a 1 p.m. contest at Cassell Coliseum. That one is part of a doubleheader, as the Hokies’ men’s team will host Georgia at 3:30.

There are two more games at 2 p.m., with No. 11 Duke (6-1) hosting Southern California (4-3) at Cameron Indoor Stadium and N.C. State (5-3) entertaining Texas Christian (5-2) at Reynolds Coliseum.

The final game of the afternoon is at 4:30, when No. 4 UNC (5-1) hosts St. John’s (7-0) at the Smith Center.

Tickets will be available at the gate for all the games. Continue reading »
