N.C. Central becomes the first Triangle Division I college basketball team to finish its season tonight, when LeVelle Moton’s men’s squad visits independent Longwood in the back end of a home-and home set.
The Eagles have won two straight in the series, prevailing 81-78 at McDougald-McLendon Gym 12 days ago.
With seven wins, Moton (pictured) has led his alma mater to its best season since 2006-07 in his first season as head coach.
NCCU has played an independent schedule this season. Next season the Eagles are set to play a MEAC regular-season slate, although they are will not be eligible for the conference tournament and post-season play until 2012. Continue reading »

McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central is on a winning streak with three straight victories over Division I teams at home.
But if the 7-20 Eagles are going to continue it, they’ll probably have to play their best game of the year tonight.
The opponent is Big South leader Coastal Carolina (22-5), mentored by former Clemson and Auburn coach Cliff Ellis who is currently No. 15 on the active Division I wins list. It’s the schools’ first meeting in basketball, and NCCU will return the game next season.
It’s the Eagles’ final home game and of course Senior Night, with Joshua Worthy and Clee Sherrod II being honored. Worthy already graduated in December.
It’s no surprise as Coastal wins 68-57, getting a huge early lead and then never letting the Eagles any closer than eight back in the second half.
The Eagles get off to an awful start, trailing 17-0 before Dami Sapara finally scores at 11:37.
And they get it going the rest of the half, trailing only 31-20 at the break as Joseph Harris leads the Chanticleers with 11 points. The problem is rebounding, as the visitors dominate the boards 22-9 before the break.
The Eagles never really threaten, but bolstered by a noisy home crowd of 2,421 never give up either.
Mario Edwards leads Coastal with 18 points, followed by Harris with 16 and Kierre Greenwood 13.

N.C. Central is on a three-game winning streak in men’s basketball, all at home and against real-live Division I competition.
Tonight, the Eagles (7-20) will see if that recent home-court magic can help them pull off a big upset.
The opponent is Big South Conference leader Coastal Carolina (22-5), coached by former Clemson and Auburn mentor Cliff Ellis.

McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central is in Durham for the fourth of a five-game homestand, and the Eagles have a chance to keep a very good thing going.
LeVelle Moton’s club (6-20) has won two straight games, both against Division I teams. And tonight’s opponent is independent Longwood, a team the Eagles beat here last season to split a home-and home series. The teams will play again on Feb. 25 in Farmville, Va.
Longwood (9-16) is on a five-game winning streak including a pair of non-Division I teams, but it includes a road victory over Fairleigh-Dickinson. But that goes by the boards as four Eagles score at least 15 points each in an 81-78 victory. Continue reading »

N.C. Central has a real two-game winning streak against Division I opposition in men’s basketball, and LeVelle Moton’s Eagles will try to keep it alive tonight.
NCCU (6-20) will host independent Longwood (9-16) at 7 p.m. at McDougald-McLendon Gym.
The Eagles, who have beaten visiting Savannah State and Maryland-Eastern Shore over the past week, will try to beat Longwood for the second straight time.
The teams collected a home-court blowout victories against each other last season.

Coming off its first men’s basketball win over a Division I team this season, N.C. Central gets a taste of the conference it will be playing in next season tonight.
The Eagles (5-20) will host MEAC member Maryland-Eastern Shore (7-16) for the second straight season at McDougald-McLendon Gym.
The Hawks, 5-5 in the MEAC this season, beat the Eagles 72-58 in their only meeting last season.

McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central tries once again to get LeVelle Moton his first win over a Division I team as head coach, and this would seem to be a good opportunity.
The opponent is Savannah State, the only other Historically Black College in the country that is playing as an independent this season. NCCU is the only Division I HBCU the Tigers are playing this season.
SSU has won three straight in the series over the last two seasons, including a 46-44 overtime win in Savannah on Jan. 20.
The game is being played at 3 p.m., the time rescheduled a couple of days ago from 7 p.m. because of concerns about nasty winter weather.
NCCU is 4-20 with all four victories over small colleges, and a win today would give the Eagles their highest win total since joining Division I as a transitional member two seasons ago. They get it, outscoring the visitors 7-2 after the final TV timeout to win 65-60.
NCCU scoring leader C.J. Wilkerson gets two fouls in the first 1:38 and plays only seven minutes in the first half. But the first half turns out to be a wash as the teams head into the locker room tied at 30-30. Savannah State is out-shooting the home team 48 percent to 37.9 at the break.
Neither team ever threatens to break the game open.
The Eagles suffer a blow with 3:59 left when Wilkerson fouls out with the score tied, but Patrick Hardy makes just one of two free throws.

Maybe the time change will give N.C. Central some good luck.
The Eagles will host their men’s basketball game with Savannah State today at 3 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled 7 p.m., to help everyone involved avoid icy roads.
NCCU is still looking for its first win over a Division I opponent under first-year coach LeVelle Moton.
The Eagles almost got it on Jan. 20 in Savannah before the Tigers escaped with a 46-44 overtime win. SSU has won three straight over NCCU over the past two seasons.

McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central gets to begin testing whether the Wizard of Oz’ Dorothy was right about home tonight.
The Eagles (4-19) have played 17 of their 23 previous men’s basketball games on the road and lost them all, but the next five are in their own nest.
NCCU isn’t in position to get an easy victory very often, and the five-game homestand won’t provide any gift-wrapped results. But no established national powers are coming to East Durham either, so at least every time the Eagles take the court they’ll have a reasonable chance for a mark in the left column.
Tonight’s opponent is Western Illinois, which agreed to come to Durham for the front end of a two-season home-and home contract. It’s definitely an escape, but the Leathernecks shoot 64.7 percent in the second half and win 53-50.
The Eagles seem to take control early. Only 6-10 center James Granstra is doing much for the Leathernecks as NCCU goes up 18-5 on a layup from Nick Chasten (pictured) at the 12:08 mark. NCCU leads 22-13 at the break as the visitors are shooting 20.0 percent. Continue reading »

N.C. Central returns to McDougald-McLendon Gym in men’s basketball tonight looking to tap into a little home-court magic.
The unfamiliar opponent is Western Illinois of The Summit League, and the game opens a five-game homestand that will be five-sixths of the Eagles’ remaining season.
WIU is 8-13. The contest is the first of a two-season home-and-home agreement.
