CAMERON INDOOR STADIUM/DURHAM It doesn’t have any fancier name this time than “The Battle of Durham,” and indeed it is that.

No. 8 Duke is hosting N.C. Central in a women’s basketball game, and the winner will be able to claim it’s the best team in the city until they meet again. Duke is going to be a prohibitive favorite.

This happens to be the sport in which the Blue Devils and Eagles, who are in Year 3 of their five-year transition to championship competition in NCAA Division I, have squared off the most. It’s the eighth meeting in the series and Duke leads by a mere 4 games to 3.

To be fair, all but the Blue Devils’ 82-29 win two seasons ago were contested before any of the current players on either team was born.

The teams have played one common opponent this season and each came out victorious. Duke beat Houston Baptist 104-35 in its season opener on the Huskies’ home court, while NCCU beat Houston Baptist 75-60 in the consolation game of South Florida’s Tournament eight days ago.

The Eagles come in with a personnel handicap, as leading scorer and freshman guard Joanna Miller is out of the lineup - although in street clothes on the bench - for one game for an unspecified violation of team rules. And the result isn’t surprising, as the Blue Devils control every aspect of the game in a 117-28 victory. Continue reading »

Thomas, Vernerey lead Blue Devils to exhibition rout of Wingate

dukevernDuke wasn’t supposed to have much trouble in its women’s basketball exhibition opener against Wingate at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

And the Blue Devils didn’t.

Jasmine Thomas had 17 points followed by 16 from freshman Allison Vernerey (pictured), while four teammates scored in double figures as Duke walloped the Division II Bulldogs 99-31 on Thursday night.

Joy Cheek had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds for the No. 6 Blue Devils, while Krystal Thomas, Karima Christmas and Kathleen Scheer added 12 points each.

“(It was) great to get the season started and get after it as a team, good to have an opponent to execute and do things,” Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said. “I thought there were some really good things out there on the floor, a million things to improve on but a great start. We are looking forward to the film and learning from the film some more things.”

Duke shot 49.4 percent to from the floor to 24.4 for the visitors, forcing 41 turnovers while committing 11.

Kurie Washington led Wingate with 11 points.

“Every kid that grows up in North Carolina watches ACC basketball and dreams about getting to play in places like Cameron Indoor Stadium,” Wingate coach Barbara Nelson said.  “You see the fans jumping, you see it on TV, and it’s exciting.

“We were excited to be here, and even after taking the thrashing we’re still excited that we got a chance to be here, to play on this floor and play against a team as great as Duke is.  I thought Duke’s players were gracious, I thought the staff was gracious, and it’s been a wonderful experience.”

The Blue Devils will complete the exhibition portion of their season on Sunday at 2 p.m. against visiting Alaska Anchorage.

CAMERON INDOOR STADIUM/DURHAM Joanne P. McCallie got a little creative when three members of her Duke women’s basketball team were too banged up to play in the team’s annual Blue/White game.

The coach invited some boys to play.

Not just any, of course, but the crew of Duke men who oppose her team in practice on a regular basis and sometimes win the battles.

Not today.

The Blue Devils, ranked as high as No. 4 nationally in some preseason prognostications, led 10-1 early and 35-9 after the first of four 10-minute quarters, rolling to a 110-43 rout over a team the public address announcer occasionally referred to as the “Washington Generals.”

Senior wing Bridgette Mitchell - whose career high is 20 - hit 24 points with eight rebounds and four steals in just 17 minutes to lead the charge. Jasmine Thomas, Duke’s other regular returning starter added 18 points and six assists while Kathleen Scheer had 14 points including four 3-pointers, Karima Christmas chipped in 13 points and Joy Cheek 10.

Jason Pifer led the guys with eight points and nine rebounds, while three teammates chipped in six points each.

The women’s team outrebounded the opposition 47-29, outshot them 58.9 percent from the floor and committed 19 turnovers to their 32. McCallie’s squad was 12-for-25 from 3-point range. Continue reading »
