Pitching continues to dominate as Mudcats take a split

Mike Potter · 11 Jul 2009, 11:45 PM · Comment

catklink2If you love pitchers’ duels, it’s too bad you probably haven’t been in Jacksonville, Fla., for the Carolina Mudcats’ last four games against the Suns.

Neither team scored three runs in a game in their series that just ended, and that pattern continued perfectly tonight in a doubleheader at The Baseball Grounds.

The Suns got just two hits - one in each game - in 13 innings, as the Mudcats won the opener 2-0 before dropping the nightcap 1-0.

Carolina is 7-13 in the second half while Jacksonville is 13-7.

Matthew Klinker (3-0) went six innings in the Mudcats’ win in the opener. All-Star selection Logan Ondrusek worked a perfect seventh to pick up the save.

Todd Frazier went 3-for-4 on the opener for Carolina, which gave Suns ace Cristhian Martinez (7-3) his first loss since May 4.

In the nightcap, Brad Stone (2-1) and two relievers combined on the three-hit shutout for Jacksonville.

Tom Cochran (1-3) took the loss, giving up one unearned run in the third inning.

The Mudcats now take a three-day All-Star Break before opening a five-game series on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium against the Chattanooga Lookouts.

Carolina’s Travis Wood has been named the starter on the mound for Monday night’s Southern League All-Star Game, while the Mudcats’ Frazier and shortstop Zack Cozart are also in the starting lineup with Ondruzek, James Avery and Jordan Smith in the bullpen.

Mudcats fight back at Chattanooga

Mike Potter · 3 Jul 2009, 1:11 AM · Comment

catcozar1The Carolina Mudcats showed the kind of fight that almost won them the first-half championship Thursday night.

Zack Cozart’s two-run homer in the sixth pulled the Mudcats out of the doldrums, finishing the scoring in a 4-3 victory over the host Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field.

If they can win the finale tonight at 6:15, when ace southpaw Travis Wood (8-3, 1.36) goes against Chattanooga’s J.D. Durbin (0-2, 1.93), they will earn a split of the six-game series.

The Lookouts got to eventual winner Jordan Smith (5-3) for three runs in the first inning.

Todd Frazier then got Carolina on the board in the fourth with his eighth homer of the season.

And in the sixth, Sean Henry tripled and scored on a grounder from Jose Castro before Cozart’s blast - his ninth of the season - put the Mudcats ahead to stay.

The Mudcats, who improved to 3-8 in the second half, return home for their big July 4 celebration game Friday night at 7:15 against the Tennessee Smokies.

Mudcats’ Wood, Heisey most popular in SL North All-Star voting

Mike Potter · 29 Jun 2009, 3:42 PM · Comment

catswoodCarolina Mudcats starting pitcher Travis Wood (pictured) and former center fielder Chris Heisey are the only unanimous selections to the North Division team for the Southern League All-Star game July 13 at Birmingham.

Heisey won’t be able to play since he had been promoted to Louisville, but he will be in the Major League Futures Game the day before in St. Louis.

Five Mudcats are scheduled to suit up for the North. Outfielder Todd Frazier was named, as well as utility infielder Zack Cozart and pitchers James Avery and Jordan Smith.

Players were selected by a vote of Southern League field managers, radio broadcasters, general managers and media.

Mudcats fall to Suns again, depart on a very long bus ride

noodlesFIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON It’s the finale of a long six-game series between the Carolina Mudcats and the Jacksonville Suns, and the homeboys are badly in need of a win.

The Mudcats lost the first-half championship of the Southern League’s North Division by one game to the Huntsville Stars, but with one game left in the series with the Suns Carolina is in last place in the division and on a three-game losing streak.

It’s Day One without center fielder and Major League Futures Game-bound Chris Heisey, and “Myron Noodleman” (pictured) is in the house to entertain.

Michael Griffin is down from Louisville to replace Heisey, and Juan Francisco is off the disabled list after nursing his pulled hamstring.

I’ll just go ahead and let you know it’s a looooong night for the Mudcats, as they take on a team half-full of guys who were Mudcats last season before Carolina switched affiliations from the Florida Marlins to the Cincinnati Reds and lose 9-0.

Heisey called up to Louisville after Mudcats drop third straight

Mike Potter · 26 Jun 2009, 11:08 PM · 1 Comment

heiseyFIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON I get to the park extra early for fifth game of the Carolina Mudcats’ series against the Jacksonville Suns, with the hosts needing two wins to salvage a tie.

The mission is to connect with Mudcats southpaw Travis Wood, for a feature story about him as one of the minor leagues’ top prospects for another website.

But Wood doesn’t seem to be around, and it takes a while to find out why.

“Didn’t you hear?” one teammate says. “He got promoted to Triple-A.”

Since it’s not my first day doing this, I ask manager David Bell if his team has had any transactions since last night’s contest.

Bell answers in the negative and confirms the more plausible clubhouse rumor that Wood - who does arrive in time to pick up a certificate for two earlier Southern League pitcher of the week awards in a pregame presentation - had to make an unplanned trip to the dentist.

That’s about 45 minutes I’ll never get back, but “hurry up and wait” has long been a reality of sports journalism.

At least I have plenty of time to fill out my scorebook - which is dangerously close to being full already - and get some computer things accomplished after making my pregame cheeseburger disappear.

Play ball!

(Spoiler alert, the Mudcats fall 6-2 for their third straight loss, and after the game center fielder Chris Heisey, pictured, - who will play in the Major League Futures Game on July 12 - is promoted to Triple-A Louisville.) Continue reading »

Mudcats’ Jordan Smith on DL

Lisa Sorg · 25 Apr 2009, 10:33 PM · Comment

This hasn’t been a good week for Mudcats’ pitcher Jordan Smith. He was ejected from Wednesday’s game against the Huntsville Stars after arguing about a check swing call, and now he’s been placed on the seven-day disabled list retroactive to April 24.

Meanwhile right-hander Justin Mallett has been assigned to the Mudcats from Triple-A Louisville. In the last 10 games for the Bats, Mallett has pitched two innings, striking out two and allowing two hits.

It wasn’t pretty, but Mudcats squeak by Stars, 7-6

FIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ ZEBULON—I went to baseball game this afternoon and a hockey match broke out.

Wild pitches, wild tempers and wild wind prevailed at the Carolina Mudcats’ homely contest versus the Huntsville Stars, which featured two ejections, a hit batter and Juan Francisco’s ballsy slide across the plate to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

The final score was 7-6, but Mudcats’ manager David Bell and starting pitcher Jordan Smith also had scores to settle with home plate umpire Jason Cooksey. Bell and Smith were both ejected in the top of the sixth inning after heated arguments with Cooksey over a check swing. Bell bellowed at Cooksey so close to his face that he probably could have counted Bell’s fillings. (Gold, mercury or white? Inquiring minds want to know.) Finally, the Mudcats’ coaching staff sped onto the field to restrain Bell, who had become so overheated that it appeared he might punch Cooksey in the face.

And all of this, ladies and gentlemen, on Education Day, when 3,000 schoolchildren had converged on the park. They got an education, all right: Fighting and bad behavior is for adults only.
