DURHAM, N.C.—Jon Scheyer’s floating jump shot sure seemed a lot like salvation Wednesday night for the Duke Blue Devils: After pushing their lead against the Florida State Seminoles to a game-high 16 points, the Devils froze on their home court, going without so much as a point for five minutes. Layups, free throws and steals by the Seminoles had trimmed the lead to four. What’s more, Lance Thomas picked up his third personal foul in that span; Kyle Singler, his fourth. Though the Seminoles had only three team fouls, Duke had already gathered nine, giving Florida State an early bonus with nearly nine minutes left. Duke’s big men weren’t scoring, and Schmingler wasn’t hitting, either.
But Scheyer, who led the Devils with 22 points en route to a 70-56 victory, stepped just under the arc and nailed a difficult shot under pressure. The team seemed to rebuild around the make. It certainly wasn’t a panacea for Duke—Scheyer, after all, turned it over as the shot clock expired 40 seconds later, and the Devils continued to struggle with mediocre shooting. After the crowd erupted with Scheyer’s hit, though, Duke’s lead wasn’t questioned for the next eight minutes.
“When it got down to 51-47 and they’re shooting free throws, it’s a game that, when you’re playing at home, there is almost more pressure on you,” explained Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski, “because you can be a little hesitant.”
That swing in momentum came in part from a defensive shift by Duke: Coming out of a timeout, the Devils switched briefly from man-to-man defense to a zone. They took the ball away from Florida State the first time down the court, resulting in a Brian Zoubek put-back off of a Nolan Smith miss. Kyle Singler followed with a crucial three off of a Smith rebound and Scheyer assist, pushing the advantage back into double digits. CAMERON INDOOR STADIUM/ DURHAM—It certainly wasn’t going to get easier: Though the Duke University Blue Devils shot a mere 39 percent during first half of the team’s Sunday night ACC opener at home versus the Clemson Tigers, the Devils’ strangling defense—which closed passing lanes and refused the Tigers the chance to establish any half-court rhythm—limited Clemson to 16 percent from the floor and just 12 points in the first 20 minutes. That’s a season low for the Tigers by nearly half. What’s more, Trevor Booker, the Tigers’ dominant forward, had scored only two, harassed as much by the long arms and body of Duke senior Lance Thomas as he was by a tempo that limited his explosiveness. CAMERON INDOOR STADIUM/ DURHAM—University of Pennsylvania guard Darren Smith swished a three pointer just nine seconds into his team’s New Year’s Eve contest against the Duke Blue Devils in Cameron Indoor Stadium Thursday night. But Duke guard Nolan Smith answered on the other end with a three of his own, scoring the first of his team-leading 23 points on the way to a 59-point Duke victory.
Smith wasn’t alone: Five Duke players scored in double digits. Indeed, the contest versus the hustling but very outmanned and interim-coached Quakers often seemed more like a final workout for the Devils before a live audience in advance of next week’s ACC play than an actual regular season game.
To wit, Duke outrebounded Penn 43-25 (and, more impressively, 24-10 in the first half), nabbing more offensive boards than Penn had defensive boards. Led by Smith’s four threes and Jon Scheyer’s triplet, Duke nearly shot 50 percent beyond the arc, compared to Penn’s 21 percent. (Penn’s Smith, who hit that opening shot, only hit one more, when his Quakers were down by 36 in the second half.) Schmingler-Duke’s tripartite scoring machine of Scheyer, Smith and Kyle Singler-combined for 62 points.
It was bolstered by the Plumlee brothers, as tonight’s game gave the Devils the season’s first strong look at the Indiana pair. Among the guests were Denzel Washington (whose son is Quaker freshman Malcolm Washington), and the Plumlee’s younger, taller brother Marshall—himself a hot recruiting property—who watched the action from but a few rows behind their favored team’s respective bench. The brothers have struggled often since freshman Mason entered the lineup last month after a hand injury in a preseason practice caused him to miss the season’s first six games. Since his Wisconsin debut, he’s scored just 14 total points, while sophomore and starter Miles has scored only 25. Thursday, though, Mason bested his season totals with 18 points, adding five rebounds to Duke’s totals. Miles, meanwhile, added 10 points and 9 rebounds. The Plumlees’ defense seemed much improved, too, as well as their connection with their teammates-both brothers connected on several long distance alley-oops with guard Scheyer and forward Singler.
“He’s getting further removed from that wrist injury,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said of Mason’s performance. “We got significant playing time for all of our bench, and that helps. He missed out on that, and he’ll keep getting better.”
Penn is very much a program in transition following the recent addition of former Penn star Jerome Allen as interim head coach. The Quakers started the season 0-6 under Glen Miller, who was replaced following a five-point loss to Monmouth earlier this month. “These last two games for us have to be viewed as opportunities for us to get better,” Allen said Thursday. “We still have the bulk of our season ahead of us.”
Duke, too: The Devils play the ranked Clemson Tigers (12-2, coming off of a tight Tuesday victory over South Carolina State) Sunday night in Durham. After being the most winning college basketball program this decade with 294 victories, they’ve got a lot of winning to do in 2010.

CAMERON INDOOR STADIUM/DURHAM Duke returns home after a brief Christmas break, hosting a Big West team that has had a rigorous schedule.
Long Beach State’s schedule is ranked third nationally headed into tonight’s contest.
The Blue Devils take the lead at 19:13 of the first half and never let go, rolling to a 84-63 victory.
Duke now stands 10-1, with its only loss at Wisconsin in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Long Beach drops to one game below .500 with tonight’s loss.
Duke has five players who score in double digits including Jon Scheyer (22), Nolan Smith (19) and Kyle Singler (14). Brian Zoubek notches his third career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Lance Thomas also has 10 points.
Larry Anderson hits 14 to lead three Long Beach players in double figures.

“I thought we beat a good team tonight, a team that’s trained hard, probably harder than anyone in the country. Initially I thought we played great. We let up defensively once we got a really commanding lead and we never got back to the level of defense that we played at the beginning of the game till the end of the game. I thought our two backcourt kids [Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith] were terrific to have 14 assists and 0 turnovers in this game. They have good quickness and they just took good care of the ball. Overall, I thought we played well or else we wouldn’t win. They (Long Beach State) keep a lot of pressure with their quickness. We did a good job on [T.J.] Robinson because he’s actually been 18 and 13 and he’s done it against Kentucky and Notre Dame, West Virginia and UCLA and Clemson. That’s the schedule that these guys have played, so they weren’t in awe of anybody. They weren’t going to back down. I thought, especially in the second half, they played really well. CAMERON INDOOR STADIUM/DURHAM Duke takes on its second straight high-powered Division II opponent, this time defending NCAA champion Findlay.
Ron Niekamp’s Oilers come in with a serious attitude, along with perhaps 200 Orange and Black-clad fans behind the team bench.
It’s an announced sellout at Cameron, and almost every seat is occupied.
Findlay went 36-0 last season, and is picked No. 4 nationally in Division II. Duke is ranked No. 9 in The Associated Press’ preseason poll.
Duke is much bigger, starting a lineup of 7-1 Brian Zoubek at center, 6-10 Miles Plumlee and 6-8 Lance Thomas at the forward spots, and 6-8 Kyle Singler and 6-5 Jon Scheyer at the guard spots. That’s just sick, as the expression goes.
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski says he can’t imagine starting a taller lineup in college ball. But he goes without 6-2 junior guard Nolan Smith in the first half. Smith is going to miss the season’s first two games because of Duke’s self-reported NCAA rules violation in which he played in one or two unsanctioned basketball games last summer. If there’s a clock and score is being kept, that’s trouble, Krzyzewski explains.
Findlay goes 6-7, 6-5, 6-4, 6-3, 5-9, and it’s a pretty good sight gag when the teams hit the floor. And the Blue Devils coast, 84-48. Continue reading »

Four Triangle players — Duke’s Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler and North Carolina’s Deon Thompson and Ed Davis — are among the 50 preseason candidates for the Wooden Award All-American Team and National Player of the Year trophy, the Wooden Award chairman announced Wednesday.
Duke and North Carolina are in in elite company, joining Kansas, Michigan State, Michigan, Purdue, UConn, Villanova and West Virginia as the only nine schools with two candidates on the preseason list.
Of the four, Singler (pictured) has the best shot at the National Player of the Year trophy, barring an explosion in offense development from any of the remaining three. Continue reading »

After only a summer of getting back into the groove of football, former Duke point guard Greg Paulus will start for the Orange, head coach Doug Marrone announced Monday.
Paulus (pictured) played four years under Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski before announcing in May that he would enroll in a graduate program at Syracuse.
Paulus, a former high school quarterback standout who led his team to a 42-3 record while setting several state passing records, won the position over sophomore Ryan Nassib and senior Cam Dantley.
It was not a foregone conclusion that Paulus would earn the starting job if he enrolled at Syracuse. Nassib was impressive in spring practice, beating out the established starter Dantley, who struggled in the passing game and contributed to the Orange placing 113th out of 119 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in passing yards. If the Blue Devils thought the offseason couldn’t get any worse, a complete change of fortunes has brought life back into next season.
Andre Dawkins, the No. 3 ranked shooting guard in the class of 2010, is expected to be cleared to play for Duke next season — a year ahead of schedule, according to Foxsports.com reporter Jeff Goodman.
An athletic guard and excellent 3-point shooter from Virginia Beach, Va., Dawkins has completed his core academic requirements and is close to graduating, his father told High School Hoop.
With the loss of Gerald Henderson to the NBA draft and Elliot Williams to Memphis, the Blue Devils were left thin at guard with only three scholarship players: Jon Scheyer, Nolan Smith and little-known Jordan Davidson.
Still, Dawkins, if he does in fact enroll a year early, will be expected to fill the athletic gap left from the Henderson and Williams departures.
Duke will still be short a true point guard and needs Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee to be as good as advertised in the paint to win the ACC, but with Dawkins that task will get much easier.

It’s eight months away until these two basketball giants square off but they just can’t seem to stay out of the headlines.
Roy Williams held his summer press conference Tuesday to discuss next year’s team and the NBA draft. Meanwhile, Duke loses another guard, which should make the ACC much more interesting league next season.

Former senior Duke point guard Greg Paulus will announce his plans for football next season Thursday at 10 a.m. in a teleconference.
Paulus briefly flirted with several football teams, including both the professional and college levels, after wrapping up the basketball season in a loss to Villanova.
A standout quarterback at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, N.Y., Paulus led his team to a 42-3 record and set several state passing records and was recruited by Notre Dame and other top football program but turned down football for an opportunity to play for Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.
After starting for three seasons as Duke’s point guard, Paulus was benched in favor of Jon Scheyer and freshman Elliot Williams more than halfway through last season.
Reports a few weeks back indicated Paulus might be headed to Syracuse University, his hometown school. But Paulus has also looked at Nebraska and Michigan.
