There still may be a few buzzer-beater deadline trades the ‘Canes haven’t announced yet, but right now it seems as though the team has traded away everyone…except those it said it was trading away. As of right now, Ray Whitney is still a ‘Cane despite rampant trade rumors to the contrary. Scott Walker and Joe Corvo are now members of the NHL-leading Washington Capitals, Aaron Ward is a Duck, Andrew Alberts is reportedly a Canuck and Stephane Yelle is floating out there in nowhere land, but he’s not with Carolina anymore.
Jim Rutherford did what he wanted – dumping dead weight and salary for draft picks. Carolina now owns the second round of the 2010 entry draft. Through various trades, the team now has at least 10 second-round picks. The Ducks re-gifted Justin Pogge to Carolina (wasn’t he a Maple Leaf, what…two or three weeks ago?) and the surging Hurricanes got Brian Pothier for Corvo. Poor Scott Walker got pawned off for what might very well be the last pick in the entire draft this year, but he’s off to a team with a very real chance of winning the cup. They might as well have called it “future considerations” for all the value a seventh-round pick usually has.
In minor news, every player Carolina signed in the offseason is now elsewhere except for Tom Kostopoulos. Ward and Yelle never seemed to mesh well with the team and were always a step behind, so chalk the whole Bruins exodus up to a failed experiment. Alberts was exactly as billed. He added needed grit but turned the puck over frequently, and wasn’t somebody the Hurricanes couldn’t stand to part with. The writing was on the wall for the perpetually injured Walker, but no one will ever forget his contributions to the ‘Canes’ 2009 playoff run.
The buzz on the web is that Rutherford wanted more for Whitney than anyone was willing to give – a first rounder and a solid NHL player, not a prospect. Maybe it just didn’t work out. We’ll know for sure in a few hours.

RBC CENTER/ RALEIGH—Caniac Nation couldn’t take another five-goal third period meltdown, and thankfully the ‘Canes provided an alternative – they lost this one the old-fashioned way. 39 shots on goal and a very late – like, 14 seconds left in the game late – Matt Cullen comeback bid didn’t pan out and the ‘Canes dropped their fifth in a row.
The entire game was a sideshow to the drama that unfolded in the first period, which saw Alex Ovechkin deliver an illegal blow and injure himself in the process. But while the Capitals recovered from the loss of their unequivocal leader, Carolina couldn’t muster enough to win after losing underrated defenseman Joe Corvo to injury.
***UPDATE: The ‘Canes announced this morning that Corvo will miss 8-10 weeks after undergoing surgery. He has been placed on injured reserve.***
Corvo got the scoring started four and a half minutes in on the power play when he scooped up a Tuomo Ruutu rebound and found a way around Jose Theodore.

After that, Carolina players started dropping like flies. Less than a minute after his goal, Corvo sidestepped an innocent looking hit in front of his own bench from Washington’s Karl Alzner. But as Alzner skated away, Corvo clutched the back of his leg as Alzner’s skate cut it. He was helped back to the locker room, almost having to be carried by six Carolina trainers.
Corvo was taken to the hospital immediately to get the cut closed. Hopefully it isn’t too serious – the ‘Canes have had more than enough deep lacerations for one autumn.
Maurice knew just about as much as everyone else after the game, though he said it was a “significant” injury.
“He went to the hospital. He’s stable, he’s fine,” Mo said. “We won’t know the extent of the injury until the doctor looks at it and sees how deep it is and what [the blade] caught.”

RBC CENTER/RALEIGH Back in the saddle.
If you’re keeping score this is my first Carolina Hurricanes game for Triangle Offense, pinch-hitting for talented young regular beat writer Kate Shefte who was unable to be at tonight’s game. Don’t worry, she’ll be back soon.
Until May I had been the Hurricanes beat writer for the Incredible Shrinking Durham Herald-Sun ever since this building opened in 1999 (and probably still have written about more total wins, losses and ties in this building than anyone else.) Until the day after Game 7 of Carolina’s storied upset of the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference Finals of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, that is, when the Paxton Media suits in Kentucky decided they would replace me with so much air and pocket the big salary.
Anyway, Carolina’s home games in the Eastern Finals against the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Penguins were the first Hurricanes playoff games in the state I did not witness in person.
Pittsburgh, of course, summarily dismissed the Hurricanes in four games, so Carolina should have a bit of a chip on the shoulder coming into tonight’s contest.
Pittsburgh comes in with a 5-1 record, tied with the New York Rangers for the league lead in points, and is perfect in four road games so far. The 2-3 Hurricanes are wearing their black “third jerseys.”
And the Hurricanes recover from a 2-0 deficit after two periods on a pair of Ray Whitney (pictured) goals to tie the score before Chris Kunitz beats Cam Ward five-hole in the third sudden-death round of shootout attempts for a 3-2 Pittsburgh win.
There are always a lot of side stories with this game. Eric Staal and his brother Jordan, who plays for the Penguins, were both at Canada’s most recent Olympic training camp - along with brother Marc who is a defenseman for the Rangers. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is of course on that roster as are both goalies, the Hurricanes’ Ward and the Penguins’ Marc-André Fleury. In an aside, Fleury was the No. 1 pick in the league’s 2003 draft in Nashville while Eric Staal was No. 2. Continue reading »

The scoring was slanted in a very different direction tonight. (Photo courtesy of Dinur, Flikr.com)
In their wildest dreams, perhaps Caniacs dared to think of earning a split against Boston at home. This was a team that had lost six of 44 games in regulation in their own building and thoroughly manhandled the ‘Canes in Game 1. In addition, this was a team that had beaten Carolina five straight times by a combined score of 22-6.
The ‘Canes hit another level tonight and Cam Ward had what was clearly an out-of-body experience in the net tonight en route to a dominating 3-0 shut out win in Boston’s barn. The ‘Canes’ defense didn’t turn the puck over as frequently and the penalty killers certainly got the job done, shutting down the Bruins four times. The offense found its way around Tim Thomas three (scratch) two times (oops, sorry) and added an empty-netter, but Ward was the star tonight, front and center. He saw the puck clearly, performed acrobatics that were nothing short of Cirque de Soleil caliber and seemed to grow an extra set of arms to keep the puck away from the goal line.

RBC CENTER/ RALEIGH—After Carolina stole a game from New Jersey in overtime at home on Friday, the Devils returned the favor in front of a rocking RBC Center crowd. The ‘Canes fell behind early and came back twice thanks to more offensive contributions from unlikely sources, but one unlucky bounce in front of the net in OT and the ‘Canes were behind in the season series again.
Carolina received most of the good scoring chances early. The ‘Canes caught Brodeur with his trousers down early when he leapt out of the crease to smother a puck, but missed. Joe Corvo brought it all the way around the net and tried to find an empty space, but all he found was waiting New Jersey defensemen.

RBC CENTER/ RALEIGH—The Carolina Hurricanes won their eighth in a row on home ice and third in a row overall against the Washington Capitals, 4-1. This time, Carolina was the tired team, having beaten the Islanders 5-4 at home last night. The Carolina defense came alive in the third to break a 1-1 tie with three goals.
The ‘Canes evened the six-game series against the Caps in the teams’ final regular season meeting, and if the season ended right now, the two teams would be facing each other in the playoffs. More importantly, the Hurricanes gained ground on Florida and Buffalo, which are on the outside looking in, and Montreal in eighth place. All three teams lost tonight.

The Carolina Hurricanes have made a total turnaround from the team that couldn’t score and couldn’t win big games, shutting out the New York Rangers – a team also fighting tooth-and-nail for a playoff spot – and winning their fourth in a row. Joe Corvo scored the game-winner in the second period and it held up after Cam Ward shut the door.
As on Friday, the ‘Canes attempted to take advantage of another tired team. New York was on the second end of a back-to-back after beating the Boston Bruins 4-3 last night. However, this team was hungrier, tougher, and, well, Avery-er than the teams Carolina blew out by a combined score of 15-4 on Friday and Saturday and gave the Hurricanes a run for their money. The game was much tighter than the score would suggest.

So. How to describe last night’s miserable showing against the Florida Panthers.
Let me just start out by saying that I did not attend the game last night. I actually watching the Flyers take on the Senators in Philadelphia, which turned out to be a better choice. However, I watched first two periods and the highlights – and there weren’t many – from the third, and I think I have a pretty good grasp on what went down. Let’s start out by acknowledging that the ‘Canes had their chances, to the tune of 42 shots on Tomas Vokoun and several shots off the crossbar. But after a defensive meltdown in the first and two quick goals in the second, it was clear that another comeback was not in the cards.
The announced sell-out crowd of 18,680 had to watch their money go down the tubes as only one team showed up to play – and it wasn’t the home team. In the preview of this game, I said one of the more important factors of this game would be seeing if the ‘Canes can play under pressure. If this is how the Hurricanes will continue to play in games of consequence, perhaps they don’t deserve to make the postseason.
It would be easy to blame the ‘Canes management for messing with a winning formula. Jakub Petruzalek and Michael Ryan were reassigned to Albany after playing very well on that western road swing against some good teams. Rod Brind’Amour was reinserted into the line-up, and there were plenty of reasons to be wary of this move. However, Brind’Amour can not be faulted; although he didn’t score, he played a solid game. He wasn’t on the ice for any of Carolina’s five goals allowed and he won 72 percent of his face-offs. Though he has been a bit of a liability this season, he came to play last night.

It was a breathtaking goal for the rest of the NHL, but the chins of those seated on the Hurricanes’ bench hit the ground for an entirely different reason. Joni Pitkanen gambled his team’s win away and pinched in too far on the point with the man advantage, allowing Alexandre Burrows to spring loose after the ‘Canes coughed up the puck. Burrows moved in slow motion, the two points balancing precariously on his stick, but fans knew what was about to happen. He faked out Cam Ward and tucked the puck behind him, breaking a 3-3 tie with just over a minute left. Yet again, an epic brain fart cost the Hurricanes an assured point, if not two, on what should have been the easiest game to win out of their three-game road trip.
Let’s not put this all on poor Joni. The Canucks were a desperate team, having lost eight games in a row due to what was quickly becoming known as “The Sundin Curse.” The ‘Nucks are a talented team, and you had to know that that streak would end once the Hurricanes stopped in for a visit. Vancouver struck twice early and jumped out to a two-goal lead off a screened shot by Kevin Bieksa and a highly-preventable Ryan Kesler goal, for which Cam Ward was out of position.
The Hurricanes responded in the second with two surprising rapid-fire goals. Although his team hadn’t been playing particularly well, Joe Corvo scored on the power play to bring the ‘Canes within one and the aforementioned Pitkanen added one of his own 25 seconds later. Pitkanen played chicken with Luongo, like in an old western shooting match, fidgeting with the puck on his stick and winding up for the perfect shot while Luongo got into position. Pitkanen slipped the puck five-hole and the Hurricanes were back.
Sundin continued his coming-out party with a tie-breaking goal, but a pretty Eric Staal tally in the third tied the game up again. Some questionable officiating occurred shortly afterward. Brandon Sutter appeared to have gotten the go-ahead goal and his second of the season minutes after the Staal tally, but following some Oscar-worthy acting by Luongo, Ryan Bayda was whistled for goaltender interference and the goal was overturned. One could make the argument that Bayda was pushed into the net, but once goaltender interference is called after a goal, the play cannot be reviewed (ridiculous, but that’s the rulebook.) Then, Chad LaRose was thrown into the net headfirst. He appeared to try and move out of the way, but was given a goaltender interference penalty nevertheless.
The point was gift-wrapped. Mattias Ohlund took a hooking penalty with three minutes left, and the win was within reach. But Pitkanen took a chance, and that chance blew up in his face like a cheap pool toy. Of course, it wasn’t entirely his fault, but the game was theirs. With a four-person scrum for the final two playoff spots in the East currently underway, the Hurricanes could not afford to regurgitate that assured point.
The Hurricanes will face the league-leading Sharks on Thursday, and the Sharks will almost assuredly not allow things to get that close. However, stranger things have happened. Nine to fivers might want to set their DVRs; the broadcast will start at 10:30 EST.

Believe it or not, there were other contributions to the sports world tonight besides Tyler Hansbrough’s usurpation of the UNC all-time point holder title. Justin Williams scored his first of the year and Joe Corvo scored a beautiful goal-scorer’s goal in overtime to carry the Hurricanes over the Panthers in overtime. It was the resurgent Corvo’s second game-winner in as many games.
The ‘Canes have taken a lot of points from Florida over the years, spanning all the way back to 2002, but as a certain Emerald City resident once said, this is a horse of an entirely different color. Despite trading away the cornerstone of their offense, Olli Jokinen, in the offseason, the Panthers now sit three points behind the Hurricanes with a game in hand and are battling for Southeast supremacy.
