Reid Brignac moves from short to second base, makes highlight reel catch.
DBAP/DURHAM—First (and second) things first: The Bulls split a two-game miniseries with the Charlotte Knights, sumoing them last night, 14-7, and then rolling over to receive same on “Education Day” this morning [sic], 9-1. The Bulls’ PR people beat me to the choicest pun the way the first waiters to spot staff-meal always scarf up the tuna tartare.
Neither game was much fun to watch. The Bulls struck for six runs in the bottom of the first yesterday on a grand slam by Justin Ruggiano and a two-run shot by John Jaso. The Knights halved the deficit in the fourth, but the Bulls tacked on seven more runs in the fifth and sixth and yawned their way to victory from there. The teams collaborated on a seven-error, 11-walk game that somehow managed to finish in less than three hours. Most of the press box denizens were probably glad not to have to pay much attention to the proceedings, because they were more interested in the TV showing the Carolina Hurricanes’ series-winning thriller over the New Jersey Devils.

DURHAM/DBAP–The great and irascible manager Leo Durocher once said: “You don’t save your best pitcher for tomorrow. Tomorrow it may rain.” I know what you’re thinking, but incredibly Durocher was not a Scorpio.
Nor did Leo manage in the age of multimillion-dollar bonuses, inflexible pitch counts and Tommy John Surgery. In 2009, you’re damn skippy you save your best pitcher for tomorrow if that’s what the front office tells you to do. So Mitch Talbot started last night’s season-opener for the Bulls as per orders from HQ, and phenom David Price was slated for tonight. At 6:45 PM, the DBAP press box was positively drizzling with excitement.
Guess what? It rained. It also thundered and lightninged. No baseball in Durham. Price will pitch tomorrow instead.
In the mean time, a couple of notes from other pastures:

Even with UNC’s unsightly stumble at Maryland on Saturday (the Heels squandered an easy win via one of the worst endgames I’ve seen a supposedly elite team play), the ACC regular season title is still theirs to win. They can even lose another game as long as it isn’t at home on Senior Day against Duke, and will still finish first via tiebreakers. Barring a total Tar Heel meltdown over the next couple of weeks, at this point we’re reduced to watching the rabble play musical chairs with slots 2-6 (more or less) and waiting it out until sweaty-palmed tournament season arrives.
Which is to say: It’s a great time for Durham Bulls notes!

Perhaps it’s because Dan Johnson (and Fernando Perez, Justin Ruggiano et al.) are in Tampa now, but the Bulls have fallen behind two games to none in the best-of-five International League finals against the Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre Yankees. In Pennsylvania last night, the Bulls lost 1-0 in a 13-inning pitching duel.
Tonight, the teams take the field at Durham Bulls Athletic Park at 7:05 p.m. In a clash of multimillion-dollar pitching prospects, Jeff Niemann starts for the Bulls while the Yankees’ dubious $20 million investment, Kei Igawa, starts for the visiting nine.

Playoffs. Had you been dropped into the DBAP by helicopter this weekend from, say, Saskatchewan, you would have had a hard time recognizing that you were watching a playoff series. The crowds were sparse, and the energy — on the field and in the stands — was sluggish and somnolent. Unbeknownst, apparently, to most of the Triangle, the Durham Bulls are now just a handful of wins away from claiming the Governor’s Cup, which goes each year to the champion of the AAA International League (the Bulls won it in 2002 and 2003). Entire sections of the DBAP were unoccupied on Saturday and Sunday, and I counted just sixteen people in the entire Diamond View section on both nights combined.
