J.D. Durbin was nearly unhittable for eight innings, sparking the Chattanooga Lookouts to a 2-0 victory over the Carolina Mudcats in the opener of their five-game series at Five County Stadium.
Durbin (2-3) allowed just five hits while striking out three on a night neither he nor reliever Matt Sartor - who earned his eighth save - issued a walk.
Jose Castro had the only multi-hit game for the Mudcats, going 2-for-4.
Lee Tabor (pictured) had a good start for the Mudcats, pitching five shutout innings before Chris Kelly (0-1) allowed an unearned run in the sixth.
The series continues Thursday night at 7:15. Matthew Klinker (3-0, 1.00), who was the Southern League’s pitcher of the week, will start against Chattanooga’s Jesus Castillo (4-7, 4.71).

The Carolina Mudcats showed the kind of fight that almost won them the first-half championship Thursday night.
Zack Cozart’s two-run homer in the sixth pulled the Mudcats out of the doldrums, finishing the scoring in a 4-3 victory over the host Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field.
If they can win the finale tonight at 6:15, when ace southpaw Travis Wood (8-3, 1.36) goes against Chattanooga’s J.D. Durbin (0-2, 1.93), they will earn a split of the six-game series.
The Lookouts got to eventual winner Jordan Smith (5-3) for three runs in the first inning.
Todd Frazier then got Carolina on the board in the fourth with his eighth homer of the season.
And in the sixth, Sean Henry tripled and scored on a grounder from Jose Castro before Cozart’s blast - his ninth of the season - put the Mudcats ahead to stay.
The Mudcats, who improved to 3-8 in the second half, return home for their big July 4 celebration game Friday night at 7:15 against the Tennessee Smokies.

FIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON It’s the finale of a long six-game series between the Carolina Mudcats and the Jacksonville Suns, and the homeboys are badly in need of a win.
The Mudcats lost the first-half championship of the Southern League’s North Division by one game to the Huntsville Stars, but with one game left in the series with the Suns Carolina is in last place in the division and on a three-game losing streak.
It’s Day One without center fielder and Major League Futures Game-bound Chris Heisey, and “Myron Noodleman” (pictured) is in the house to entertain.
Michael Griffin is down from Louisville to replace Heisey, and Juan Francisco is off the disabled list after nursing his pulled hamstring.
I’ll just go ahead and let you know it’s a looooong night for the Mudcats, as they take on a team half-full of guys who were Mudcats last season before Carolina switched affiliations from the Florida Marlins to the Cincinnati Reds and lose 9-0.
