CAMERON INDOOR STADIUM/DURHAM Joanne P. McCallie said that when she was making this season’s schedule for her Duke women’s basketball team, she expected James Madison to be pretty good.
Just maybe not this good.
The No. 7 Blue Devils (7-2) will be playing their fourth nationally-ranked opponent of the season on Friday night at 7, when the No. 24 Dukes (7-0) visit Cameron Indoor Stadium.
JMU is 2-0 against the ACC this season, having beaten Virginia Tech 66-59 at home and No. 14 Virginia 75-73 on the road.
Duke has won 19 straight home games and 33 straight December home games.
The Blue Devils are coming off a loss, as they fell 71-55 at No. 2 Stanford on Tuesday night.
“Our guards had rims in their eyes and springs in their arms,” McCallie said at her Thursday press luncheon. “It was frustrating as all get-out. (Our post players) did not touch the ball enough. Our guards were too quick, and not understanding the tempo of the game enough. We’ve got to be able to manage those games. Both teams are pretty good, and one’s playing at home. It’s not just gun city.”
McCallie said that when the schedule was made, she and her staff expected JMU to have a good enough team to make the NCAA Tournament. Point guard Dawn Evans is averaging 26.5 points per game for the Dukes.
“I knew they were going to be good, but no one would have predicted undefeated and two ACC wins,” McCallie said of the Dukes. “They have ‘Kristi Toliver’ (the former Maryland guard now with the WNBA’s Chicago Sky) on that team, plain and simple. Evans/Toliver, synonymous. Unbelievable guard. Averaging 27 points a game. Never saw a shot she didn’t like. She can create, she plays within her team, gives her team the ball, takes shots left and right.
“Their guard play is over the moon, between her and the freshman (Tarik Hislop) who thinks she’s like her. She’s mimicking the junior Evans. This is one of the best backcourts you’ll see coming to Cameron. This will be right up there with any backcourt you’ll see come into Cameron this season.”
Junior center Krystal Thomas (pictured), the Blue Devils’ rebounding and field-goal percentage leader, said her team is aware of the challenge JMU presents. Continue reading »

N.C. Central coach Mose Rison is 14-18 after three seasons, and the future continues to look bright. (File photo by Rob Rowe)
N.C. Central’s football season has been over for nearly a week now, and for the second straight season Mose Rison’s club finished with a 4-7 record.
After a tough start in which the Eagles went 0-6 with road defeats to heavily favored Liberty, Appalachian State and Duke, the third-year head coach had set a goal of winning the last five games to finish 5-6. And because of a road defeat at Old Dominion in the ninth game of the season, it didn’t happen.
But what kind of shape is the NCCU program in right now? Reality says it’s pretty good. Continue reading »

N.C. Central had another respectable showing in the 2K Sports Classic in Miami, but in the end Murray State was just too deep.
B.J. Jenkins’ 16 points led five Racers in double figures as they topped the Eagles 84-61 in their men’s basketball contest Sunday night.
Nick Chasten (pictured) also had 16 points to lead the 1-4 Eagles, who will play their final game of the event today at 4 p.m. against James Madison (1-2). The Dukes beat host Florida International 81-68 on Sunday.
C.J. Wilkerson had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles, while Michael Glasker chipped in 11 points.
Ivan Aska scored 15 points, Danero Thomas and Isaiah Canaan 13 each and Isacc Miles 10 for the Racers (3-1), who outshot NCCU 52.8 percent to 36.8.

LeVelle Moton and Isiah Thomas each got his first win as a college basketball coach earlier this week.
After tonight, one of them is going to be on a two-game winning streak.
Moton’s N.C. Central club (1-2) will play its second game in Miami so far this season tonight at 7, when the Eagles visit Thomas’ Florida International club (1-3).
It’s a part of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, in which both teams already had a loss at UNC.
The Eagles will play two more games after tonight in the round-robin event on the Golden Panthers’ floor, taking on Murray State on Sunday at 8 p.m. and James Madison on Monday at 4.
NCCU will probably continue to be without forward Lamar Pittman, who remains day-to-day as he recovers from knee surgery of last fall. Continue reading »

SMITH CENTER/CHAPEL HILL LeVelle Moton’s first game assignment as N.C. Central’s head basketball coach wasn’t supposed to be easy, and in fact he said he relished the challenge.
The Eagles, coming off a 4-27 campaign and in their third season of Division I basketball, come into Wednesday’s game as prohibitive underdogs against defending NCAA champion North Carolina, which is ranked No. 4 nationally.
It is the schools’ historic first meeting, although they have squared off before in an exhibition back in 2003 when Roy Williams was in his first season as UNC head coach. The Tar Heels won that one in 97-59 at the Smith Center over an NCCU team coached by Phil Spence.
The game is part of the 2K Sports Classic Benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer, and everybody can see it on ESPNU. And it pretty much turns out as expected, as the Tar Heels roll 89-42 behind a career high-tying 17 points from Marcus Ginyard (pictured) in front of about a two-thirds-full arena on a cold, rainy night.
The games in the 12-team festival are already preset except for what will likely be the mythical championship game.
The Tar Heels will end up at Madison Square Garden Nov. 19-20, facing Ohio State in the semifinals and either St. John’s of California the next night.
NCCU, meanwhile, will finish its participation in the event in Miami, where the Eagles will face host Florida International on Nov. 20, Murray State on Nov. 22 and James Madison on Nov. 23.
UNC has already disposed of FIU, under new coach Isiah Thomas, 88-72 on Wednesday night. Continue reading »

LeVelle Moton may not have known quite what he was getting into when he first decided he wanted to be a college basketball coach.
Tonight at 9, he finds out.
In his very first game Moton (pictured top left), who was an assistant at his alma mater for two seasons before taking over the reins, will lead his N.C. Central team against defending NCAA champion UNC (1-0) at the Smith Center.
Roy Williams (pictured at right) coaches the No. 4 Tar Heels, who will be heavy favorites in a game shown on ESPNU. NCCU was 4-27 last season in Henry Dickerson’s final season as head coach, and NCCU’s third season as a transitional Division I member.
The contest is part of the 2K Sports Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, which UNC helped tip off on Monday night with an 88-72 win over visiting Florida
International in Isiah Thomas’ first game as the Golden Panthers’ head coach.
Moton said he’s probably going to try to come with some odd wrinkles to try to keep up with the Tar Heels.
“That’s the tough thing about this transition and being a ‘low major’ school,” Moton said. “You can be the best running team in ‘low major’ basketball D-I, but Wednesday night if we try to go out there and run with those guys, you’ll get run off the court.
“I read an English parable in 12th grade, and I’ll never forget it. It was about a hedgehog and a fox and it was talking about how the fox had so many deceptive ways of trying to run up on him. And each time, the hedgehog would just ball up in a circle and his spikes would come out and that’s how he defended himself. And so every day the fox would come from different angles, from under a tree, under a bush, whatever, and the hedgehog just did what he did. And that’s pretty much how Carolina is. They just do what they do, and you’re just not going to out-man them. I guess we’ve got to be the fox and come up with some clever ways to gain an advantage.”
The “tournament” continues in a few days with games at New York’s Madison Square Garden and in Miami at Florida International.
The Tar Heels will play Ohio State on Nov. 19, then the winner of that night’s California-Syracuse game the next day.
NCCU will visit FIU on Nov. 20, and then take on Murray State on Nov. 22 and James Madison on Nov. 23 in Miami.

Eleven home games plus trips to UNC and N.C. State highlight this season’s N.C. Central men’s basketball schedule
under new coach LeVelle Moton (pictured).
The Tar Heels and Wolfpack , which NCCU will face for the third straight season, are two of four ACC opponents along with Miami and Virginia Tech Moton’s team will be facing this time.
Other familiar opponents will include High Point, Savannah State and Longwood - with whom the Eagles will have home-and-home sets for the third straight season - as well as a visit to Colgate to face the Red Raiders for the third straight year.
The Eagles have six games on the schedule against in-state opponents, as they will host N.C. Wesleyan on Nov. 18 and travel to East Carolina on Jan. 3.
There is also one MEAC opponent on the slate, as Maryland-Eastern Shore will visit McLendon-McDougald Gym.
The Nov. 11 game with the Tar Heels, which will be both teams’ opener in the 2K Sports Classic Benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer, will be shown live at 9 p.m. on ESPN2. The rest of the event will have the Eagles visiting Florida International for games against the host Golden Panthers as well as Murray State and James Madison.
The UNC contest is one of the Eagles’ three scheduled TV games, as they will be on the Big Ten Network at Iowa on Nov. 28 at 12:35 p.m. and at Indiana on Dec. 19 at 8:30.
NCCU will also host the B.C. Powder Classic on Jan. 15-16, taking on Tennessee Temple and Apprentice with CIAA member Chowan as the de facto co-host.
The Eagles’ other home opponents will be Carver Bible, Florida Gulf Coast, Western Illinois and Coastal Carolina.

David Cutcliffe has talked about how he wants to make his Duke football team a contender for championships and bowl bids ever since he took over the program before the 2008 season.
And although the Blue Devils didn’t quite get to that point last season, they did make some huge strides with a 4-8 finish that could have been even better.
They’ll try to begin improvement on that Saturday night, when defending NCAA Division I (Championship Subdivision) champion Richmond visits Wallace Wade Stadium in the season opener for both teams.
Richmond pulled off quite a coup last time the Spiders came to Durham in 2006, blanking the Blue Devils 13-0 in front of a decent-sized crowd and certainly taking home a nice guarantee check. (Neither school has to say how much, because both are private.)
That contest, which started an 0-12 season for Duke, was the first career game for many, many fourth-year seniors with redshirt juniors who will play on Saturday including both quarterbacks - Duke’s Thaddeus Lewis (pictured) and Richmond’s Eric Ward.
Neither Cutcliffe nor Richmond coach Mike London, who is also in his second season in his current job, were involved in that one.
“Our hands are full (on Saturday),” Cutcliffe said. “Richmond is starting 15 redshirt seniors and seven redshirt juniors, and I don’t think I’ve faced that in my career. … I’ve looked at (the 06 game). It was a tough day for Duke, particularly offensively. I hope we’re better than we were in 2006. But we’re playing a much better Richmond team.” Continue reading »
