Duke, UNC make top 10 in ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll

The Blue Devils need preseason ACC Player of the Year Kyle Singler to lead them to the Final Four.

Coming off a national championship and a roster overhaul, coaches picked North Carolina No. 4 in the nation in the preseason coaches’ poll released Thursday.

Duke, who reached the Sweet 16 before losing by 23 points to eventual Final Four-bound Villanova, is ranked No. 8 in the poll.

Both teams tied for first in the ACC preseason poll — the first time in ACC history the league has had co-favorites; both teams have top-10 recruiting classes (No. 3 for UNC, No. 8 for Duke according to Scout.com); both teams made the top 10 in the preseason poll for the second season in a row.

Most importantly, both teams have big question marks heading into the season.  Duke lost its offensive catalysts when Gerald Henderson (NBA draft) and Elliot Williams (transferred to Memphis) left the team.  The Blue Devils are still searching for a difference maker at point guard until 2010 stud Kyrie Irving can come to town, and post production is still unproven with a lot of youth.

Talented guard might enroll early at Duke

Jacob Swiger · 16 Jul 2009, 11:48 AM · Comment

If the Blue Devils thought the offseason couldn’t get any worse, a complete change of fortunes has brought life back into next season.

Andre Dawkins, the No. 3 ranked shooting guard in the class of 2010, is expected to be cleared to play for Duke next season — a year ahead of schedule, according to Foxsports.com reporter Jeff Goodman.

An athletic guard and excellent 3-point shooter from Virginia Beach, Va., Dawkins has completed his core academic requirements and is close to graduating, his father told High School Hoop.

With the loss of Gerald Henderson to the NBA draft and Elliot Williams to Memphis, the Blue Devils were left thin at guard with only three scholarship players:  Jon Scheyer, Nolan Smith and little-known Jordan Davidson.

Still, Dawkins, if he does in fact enroll a year early, will be expected to fill the athletic gap left from the Henderson and Williams departures.

Duke will still be short a true point guard and needs Ryan Kelly and Mason Plumlee to be as good as advertised in the paint to win the ACC, but with Dawkins that task will get much easier.

Duke/UNC: Elliot Williams, Will Graves and more

Jacob Swiger · 24 Jun 2009, 3:30 PM · Comment

It’s eight months away until these two basketball giants square off but they just can’t seem to stay out of the headlines.

Roy Williams held his summer press conference Tuesday to discuss next year’s team and the NBA draft.  Meanwhile, Duke loses another guard, which should make the ACC much more interesting league next season.

The night I watched the NBA playoffs with Elliot Williams—and discussed Memphis

Matt Saldaña · 24 Jun 2009, 1:10 PM · 1 Comment

According to a Wednesday press release, breakout guard Elliot Williams will be leaving Duke’s basketball team after one season to be closer to his family in Memphis, Tenn., due to family medical reasons. The release notes that Williams plans to appeal the NCAA rule that transfers must sit out one season, and play for a school “closer to his hometown of Memphis.” We extend our best to Williams and his family, and offer the following two observations:

1. This will be a huge loss for Duke. (See Jacob Swiger’s post for more.)

2. Duke’s loss will most likely be the University of Memphis’s gain. The Tigers are losing their own standout quasi-point guard, Tyreke Evans, in this year’s NBA draft, and would be a natural fit for Williams’ up-tempo game.

In April, I bumped into Williams—who I’d only encountered previously in post-game interviews—at a bar in downtown Durham called 1013 West Main, where he was watching another Memphis guard, Derrick Rose, battle Rajon Rondo and the Boston Celtics in perhaps the most thrilling first-round NBA series of all time. (It was Game 2, which Boston won on an assist from Rondo—his 16th—and a three-pointer by Ray Allen.) Continue reading »

Duke’s Henderson declares for NBA draft

Matt Saldaña · 25 Apr 2009, 4:06 PM · 1 Comment

According to Duke University, Gerald Henderson has declared for the NBA draft:

“After a lot of thought and discussion with my family and the Duke coaching staff, I have decided to enter the NBA Draft,” said Henderson. “Playing in the NBA has been a goal of mine since a young age and I am thrilled to have the opportunity. My three years at Duke have been a tremendous learning experience and have helped me develop both as a person and as a player.”

Along with Kyle Singler, Henderson led the Blue Devils this year in scoring with 16.5 ppg, and was the second-highest contributor in assists (2.5 ) and rebounds (4.9) per game. Other than seniors Greg Paulus and David McClure, he is the only player from the 2008-09 roster to leave.

Duke has been top-heavy behind the arc, and Henderson’s departure–though it will deal a big blow to the team’s offensive production–may open up the 3-spot to Elliot Williams, a natural swingman who filled in as a point guard late in the season. That would leave the starting point-guard slot to Nolan Smith and/or … John Wall?

Duke’s Henderson to go pro … maybe

Jacob Swiger · 21 Apr 2009, 7:02 PM · 4 Comments

Various reports surfaced Monday saying an announcement for Duke guard Gerald Henderson to enter the NBA Draft was imminent.

WRAL News reported Monday that two NBA sources said Henderson was going to declare and various draft websites said he was in the process of hiring an agent.

Somehow these two mysterious and unknown NBA sources are more reputable than Duke’s Associate Sports Information Director Matt Plizga, who actually spoke to Henderson.

UNC’s Ed Davis returning for sophomore year

Jacob Swiger · 12 Apr 2009, 6:07 PM · 2 Comments

It’s official: Freshman forward Ed Davis said Sunday he’ll return for his sophomore campaign.

“I am returning to North Carolina for my sophomore season and will not apply for the NBA draft,” Davis said in a statement. “I love being a student at Carolina and playing with my teammates for coach [Roy] Williams. I’d like to play in the NBA someday, but my family and I don’t think I’m ready to take that step.”

Speculation was abound that Davis was not entirely ruling the draft out, despite his early declaration to return right after UNC beat Michigan State on April 6.

With four time all-American Tyler Hansbrough graduating, Davis should be the centerpiece of UNC’s interior next season and has a chance to really blossom into a defensive menace after leading the Tar Heels with 65 blocks off the bench.

Junior guards Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington are expected to declare for the draft after both averaged close to 20 points in the NCAA tournament and shot over 50 percent from the field.  Lawson and Ellington both entered the draft after their sophomore years without hiring an agent.

And eight miles down the road silence on the part of Gerald Henderson is hinting that he is strongly considering the NBA draft.  The junior guard averaged 16.5 points per game but faded down the stretch, shooting 11-for-44 from the field in the NCAA tournament, a staggering 25 percent.

Sophomore Kyle Singler said he would return after Duke lost to Villanova in the Sweet 16.

Duke’s campaign ends: morning open thread

Wow. What a dispiriting way for the Blue Devils to end their season, with a 77-54 blowout loss to Villanova that featured their worst shooting performance of the season—even worse than the Clemson game.

Veteran Duke-watchers knew the end was inevitable—the team was simply too dependent on its perimeter offense. To wit: Gerald Henderson shot 1-14 and Jon Scheyer mustered 3-18. Kyle Singler was 5-13.

Ryan Campbell emailed me this morning with an interesting point:

I realized earlier that Duke has fallen at least a round short of their seed expectation in each of the last five tournaments. Even when given a 6 seed a few years ago they didn’t even make it to the second round.

What’s the outlook for Duke next year? How much does its future depend on Gerald Henderson’s pro plans? Will they get the big man they so clearly need? Will Plumlee or Zoubek develop, or is there a recruit coming in?

Triangle Offense picks UNC-Duke

I still believe the Heels pose too many matchup problems for the Devils, especially at point guard. Additionally, in the past Zoubek has not been effective in this game, and who knows how the Lance Thomas injury will affect him.

But it should be a very good game. Duke will be the looser team this time around, and there’s a chance that UNC will be over-emotional on senior day, although in recent years that hasn’t been a problem.

Score: UNC 85, Duke 79

The news of Ty Lawson leaving practice on crutches changes the complexion of this game. If he’s limited at all, the Blue Devils should win. And even worse for Carolina, Lance Thomas has been updated to probable so depth is not as much as an issue for Duke.

Duke will try to make this game ugly and the score will be significantly lower. The Blue Devils win on the back of Gerald Henderson in the last 3 minutes.

Pick: duke_50
Duke 73, UNC 70

The Heels take this one for the same reasons they won at Cameron. The Devils have no answer for Ty Lawson or Tyler Hansbrough. The Duke defense still hasn’t proven it can stop a top flight offense, and Carolina’s offense is one of the nation’s elite (OE: 1.23 pts/poss).

Duke at UNC: Williams vs. Ellington

Jacob Swiger · 5 Mar 2009, 7:21 PM · 1 Comment

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s genius insertion of Elliot Williams — a juicy McDonald’s Big Mac — into the starting lineup provided a boost for the slumping Blue Devils.

Meanwhile, UNC’s Wayne Ellington’s highs and lows seem to oscillate in sync with Carolina’s offensive success.

When Ellington’s hot, the Heels roll. When he’s not, well, it tends to be ugly, especially when Ellington tries to force 3-pointers down opponents’ throats.
