Tar Heels’ Lucas, DeGraffenreid help foil Gardner-Webb’s upset bid

Mike Potter · 13 Dec 2009, 6:56 PM · Comment

unclucas2SMITH CENTER/CHAPEL HILL UNC plays its final pre-Christmas home game in women’s basketball today, and it’s supposed to be the Tar Heels’ final regular-season game in this building this season.

Renovated Carmichael Auditorium is supposed to be ready for the Dec. 29 game against Kennesaw State. We’ll see.

Today’s opponent is Gardner-Webb, which gets a real opportunity today as the Runnin’ Bulldogs are off to the fastest start in school history. It’s the first meeting between the teams.

GWU, which was in the Triangle earlier for a 66-55 win over N.C. Central back on Nov. 22, has won a school-record eight straight games for an 8-1 start and received votes in the last coaches’ poll.

UNC is No. 11. If Gardner-Webb, which has five players averaging in double figures, can accomplish an upset today that will probably be noted on the cover of next season’s media guide. And the visitors give a good account of themselves before falling 81-65.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs are serious when they hit the floor, taking a 12-11 lead in a sequence that includes six ties and five lead changes.

But the Tar Heels respond with an 11-0 run, including the layup from Italee Lucas (pictured) that puts them ahead to stay at 11:29 and a 3-pointer from Lucas that ends the spree at 10:03. Continue reading »

Women’s roundup: UNC hosts streaking Bulldogs while NCSU visits S. Carolina

uncdegraUNC will host Gardner-Webb, a member of the Big South Conference, while N.C. State will travel to South Carolina.

Guess which women’s basketball team might have a tougher assignment today?

The No. 11 Tar Heels will host the Runnin’ Bulldogs today at 3 in the Smith Center. And they’ll be taking on one of the hottest teams in the region. Rick Reeves’ club is on a school-record eight-game winning streak, has five players averaging in double figures and is led by 6-6 center Sandra Vaitkute.

UNC will counter with one of the nation’s best backcourts, with Cetera DeGraffenreid (pictured) leading the show at the point.

N.C. State will be on the road against the Gamecocks, who beat the Wolfpack 56-55 last season in Raleigh. It’s another big test for the team under first-year coach Kellie Harper, as every non-conference win is important to get State back into post-season play after a one-year absence. Continue reading »

SMITH CENTER/CHAPEL HILL UNC is home against another team from the Big South Conference, and as is usual in such games the Tar Heels are heavily favored.

They’re coming off kind of an odd week, in which they lost by six points at Michigan State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and then came back to beat previously unbeaten St. John’s by 10.

And somehow the voters in the Associated Press poll dropped them seven spots, all the way from No. 4 to their current No. 11.

The Michigan State game was the Tar Heels’ only loss while Radford (1-5) is winless against Division I opposition.

Radford has won games in this series before, but none of those was in the past 20 years. UNC is 3-0 against the Big South this season. It turns out pretty much as expected in the end, as the Highlanders scrap but UNC wins 74-48. Continue reading »

Tar Heels cruise past Gardner-Webb 93-72

unc_50CHAPEL HILL/SMITH CENTER — After suffering its first defeat of the season last weekend in disastrous fashion to Syracuse, North Carolina’s return game was a home affair against outmanned Gardner-Web.

While mismatches such as these typically don’t excite the fanbase — indeed, crowd turnout and volume have been subpar so far this season — there was more anxiety evident in the stands after the debacle against the Orange.

But Carolina was able to operate its transition game the best it has all season, leading to an easy victory in which several struggling players were able to play more loosely and, thus, more effectively.

NCCU can’t overcome Gardner-Webb’s 6-6 center, falls to 0-4 on the season

nccumill3McLENDON-McDOUGALD GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central is still looking for its first win of the women’s basketball season, and today the Eagles get their second straight home game.

Today’s opponent is Gardner-Webb (2-1), which was picked in preseason to finish third in the Big South Conference. The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ only loss so far has been to Houston.

NCCU (0-3) fought gamely in its last contest Wednesday night against Campbell, falling behind by over 20 points before recovering to make it close. But the Camels dominated down the stretch in a 79-63 win.

The Eagles played Gardner-Webb last season in Boiling Springs, winning 73-60.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ best player may be Northern High alumna Margaret Roundtree, whose older sister Tonia played for the Eagles a couple of years ago. GWU also has a big presence inside in 6-6 Lithuanian Sandra Vaitkute, who played her first two seasons at Maine.

The most accomplished player on the NCCU roster, sophomore forward Chasidy Williams, is still not playing because of an undisclosed medical situation. Williams is day-to-day.

And although the game is competitive it turns out to be a tough day for the Eagles, as Gardner-Webb wins 66-55 despite 22 points from the Eagles’ Joanna Miller (pictured). Continue reading »

Moton gets his first career win as Eagles split basketball doubleheader

Mike Potter · 18 Nov 2009, 11:07 PM · Comment

nccugranMcLENDON-McDOUGALD GYM/DURHAM It’s the home opener for both basketball teams at N.C. Central, and each is still looking for its first victory of the season after two road losses.

For the men’s team under first-year head coach LeVelle Moton, about all that has been established is that the Eagles aren’t ready for the ACC. So far they’ve played a killer schedule. But they’ll be clear favorites tonight when they take the floor against Division III N.C. Wesleyan (0-1).

Forward Lamar Pittman will continue to sit out tonight as he recovers from his ACL injury of last fall. The Eagles are not good early, but shrug off a double-digit deficit to prevail 85-70 behind 25 points from T.J. Granger (pictured). Continue reading »

RALEIGH — Russell Wilson set the all-time NCAA mark for consecutive attempted passes without an interception as N.C. State cruised to a 45-7 win against Gardner-Webb on Saturday night.

Wilson’s record, which now stands at 329 after eclipsing Kentucky signal-caller Andre Woodson’s 2006-07 total of 325, provided the only drama as the Wolfpack beat their second Football Championship Subdivision team in as many weeks.

This game didn’t look quite as much like a rapid-fire scoring Techmo Bowl mismatch (see Murray State last week), but N.C. State wasn’t challenged as Wilson looked comfortable throwing 26 for 36 for a career high 345 yards with four touchdowns. He didn’t toss a pick for the 13th straight game.

Hungry N.C. State Eyes A Second Cupcake against Gardner-Webb

N.C. State Quarterback Russell Wilson looks to duplicate his early success this week when he faces Gardner-Webb.

N.C. State (1-1) vs. Gardner-Webb (2-0)

Video on theACC.com, Audio on WRAL-FM 101.5

Key stats … Gardner-Webb, the second Football Championship Subdivision squad to come to Raleigh in as many weeks, faces an uphill battle in this contest. The Big South squad crushed Mars Hall and got a tough road win against Western Carolina en route to their first 2-0 start since 2006. Though the Wolfpack dismantled Murray State 65-7 last weekend, scoring on their first 10 drives, they could face a stiffer task against the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Last year, in the GW’s only ACC contest to date, Georgia Tech was forced to block a last-second field goal to survive 10-7. The team held eventual ACC Player of the Year Jonathan Dwyer to just 27 yards rushing. The Wolfpack, though superior in size and speed, will need to find a way to move to ball on the ground against a defense that’s allowed opponents to rush for more than 125 yards just four times in its last 13 contests.

N.C. State will win if … They can establish Toney Baker early and create turnovers. Baker scored three times last weekend, ending a long-injury-riddled scoring drought.

Gardner-Webb will win if … Quarterback Stan Doolittle keeps proving his surname wrong. Last week the senior led his team on a 12-play 79-yard drive to win the game on his QB-sneak touchdown. He earned Big South Offensive Player of the Week honors after going 23-40 for 265 yards and a TD and rushing 12 times for 30 yards and a TD.

What they’re saying … Gardner-Webb Coach Steve Patton: “We have some kids who could break into their starting lineup, but not a lot. The difference is the second-line players are often more highly recruited than our first-line players. We have some guys who can play there, but across the board we don’t.”

Players to watch … On the GW side of the ball Doolittle is the guy to watch, along with Patrick Hall, who is averaging 9.3 yards per carry this year, including a 58-yard scamper. Look for Willie Young to provide pressure of the edge and create an early turnover.

On the N.C. State side of things, Russell Wilson needs just 33 passes without an interception to break former Kentucky signal-caller Andre Woodson’s career mark. Look also for Jarvis Williams to get loose deep for an early score as he did against Murray State. The Wolfpack will content with a veteran defensive front seven, including Sporting News Preseason Second Team all-American selection Mario Brown.

Vegas line None

Score prediction and brief explanation 35-10 N.C. State. This Gardner Webb team proved it can hang with ACC talent last year, and is must more equipped to provide a test than was Murray State. Still, FBS talent will be a bit too much for them to overcome.
