A walk-off single from Logan Parker (pictured) completed a late comeback, giving the Carolina Mudcats a 3-2 win over the visiting Mississippi Braves on Saturday night.
The Braves began the scoring with a pair of fifth-inning runs off starter Alexander Smit, on an RBI double from Concepcion Rodriguez followed by an RBI single from Brandon Hicks.
Mississippi starter Jose Ortegano carried a shutout into the eighth before Carson Kainer’s single started a two-run rally. A wild pitch and walk followed, before a one-out RBI single from Kris Negron chased the starter. Shaun Cumberland’s infield hit tied the score.
In the ninth, Zack Cozart singled and took second on an error. Eric Eymann’s single moved Cozart to third to set up Parker’s heroics.
Zach Ward (2-4) was the winning pitcher.
The series continues tonight at 6:15, with Jerry Gil (2-4, 9.57) on the mound for the Mudcats.

FIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON It’s the opener of the Carolina Mudcats’ final series of the season, a five-game set against the Mississippi Braves that will conclude with an afternoon game on Labor Day.
Frankly it doesn’t mean much except for individual statistics. The Mudcats are in last place in the Southern League’s North Division - although only a game and a half behind the fourth-place Huntsville Stars, who are playoff-bound after edging out Carolina by a single game to win the first half.
Mississippi will finish with a winning half unless the Mudcats really do some butt-kicking over the next five days, but the Braves are solidly in third place in the South and most of them will be headed back to their hometowns after a long bus ride following Monday’s contest.
But both teams have been playing out the string very well, as each comes in with a three-game winning streak.
With the Southern League’s wildly-unbalanced schedule, it’s Mississippi’s only visit to North Carolina this season - only the Tennessee Smokies, Jacksonville Suns and Huntsville visited Zebulon for more than a single five-game series.
That’s too bad for one particular reason, because colorful Mississippi manager Phillip Wellman, who played for the Durham Bulls in the late ’80s and coached there in the early ’90s, is in town just once.
Both rosters are pretty depleted as the Cincinnati Reds try to bolster Louisville and the Atlanta Braves do the same for Gwinnett in an attempt to win the International League’s Governors’ Cup.
The Mudcats will have a quality pitcher on the mound tonight in southpaw Matt Maloney (pictured), who was sent directly down from Cincinnati apparently for just this one outing to keep him fresh.
Fortunately it’s a beautiful night for, well, anything. And the Mudcats end up winning 6-5 with a bottom-of-the-ninth rally.
Let’s grab an Italian sausage - I’m going to be missing those things all winter but it’s not as if I need them - and play ball. Continue reading »

It’s too bad for the Carolina Mudcats they didn’t have a doubleheader like this a month ago, when it could have helped them in the pennant race.
Two shutouts in one night.
Alexander Smit (pictured) and Joe Krebs each started shutout wins as the Mudcats beat the homestanding Montgomery Biscuits 1-0 and 5-0 on Monday night.
Smit (4-3) pitched six innings in the Game 1 win while Sean Watson came on for the seventh for his sixth save.
Carolina scored the run in the third, on a Jose Castro single that scored Jake Long.
In the nightcap, the Mudcats scored three runs in the third off Alex Torres (0-1) on a Yonder Alonso single followed by Zack Cozart’s two-run homer and never looked back.
Zach Ward (1-4) picked up the win.
Carolina had two transactions on Monday, as infielder Eric Eymann was sent down from Triple-A Louisville, while infielder Justin Tordi has been sent down to Sarasota.
Carolina plays its final road game of the season tonight at 8:05, with Jeremy Horst (0-3, 9.20) on the hill. The Mudcats return home Thursday night for the opener of a five-game set against the Mississippi Braves.

The Carolina Mudcats’ game with the Chattanooga Lookouts was rained out Friday night at Five County Stadium and will be played tonight as part of a 6:15 p.m. doubleheader.
The Mudcats will be attempting to break a three-game losing streak during tonight’s twin bill.
Carolina will have a new player for tonight’s action in infielder Justin Tordi, who has been promoted from Sarasota after hitting .172 with a homer and 15 RBI.
Tordi will replace Eric Eymann (pictured), who has been promoted to Louisville of the International League. Eymann was hitting .233 with a homer and 20 RBI at the time of his promotion.

The Carolina Mudcats played another nail-biter with the Jacksonville Suns Friday night, coming out on the short end in a very odd way.
Ramon Geronimo nailed Jacksonville hitter Mike Stanton in the back with the bases loaded and one out in the 10th, giving the homestanding Suns a 2-1 win at the Baseball Grounds.
With one out in the extra inning Lorenzo Scott singled, followed by a double from Ryan Klosterman. Geronimo issued an intentional walk to Logan Morrison, then plunked Stanton on a 1-1 offering to even the current series at one win each.
The Mudcats’ run came in the third, when a single from Sean Henry (pictured) scored Eric Eymann. Jacksonville tied the score in the bottom of that frame on an error from catcher Brian Peterson.
Matt Peterson (2-2) was the winning pitcher, while Geronimo dropped to 2-3.
The game was slowed by two rain delays totaling an hour and four minutes.
Carolina (6-12) and Jacksonville (12-6) will finish their current series with a 5:35 p.m. doubleheader tonight.
Matthew Klinker (2-0, 1.50) and Tom Cochran (1-2, 4.21) will start for the Mudcats.

FIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON Back for the finale of the Carolina Mudcats’ short four-game homestand against the Tennessee Smokies, and the home team finally has a bit of momentum following Monday night’s 8-1 whipping of the boys from Sevierville.
They’re still in last place in the Southern League’s North Division, but less than 20 percent of the second half has been played.
It’s getaway day for Tennessee, and although it’s going to be a hot one neither team is going to squeal about a noon start. The Smokies are home Wednesday against Montgomery, while Carolina will have the day off and leave for Thursday’s contest at Jacksonville.
In an aside it’s going to be a long day for me, as I’ll be covering the Durham Bulls’ home game with Gwinnett seven hours and five minutes after the start of this one. The trip is right at 50 miles.
Smokies manager Ryne Sandberg is in Game 2 of a three-game Southern League suspension for altercations with umpires.
And a particularly fun thing going on in the press areas is a “broadcaster camp” being conducted by Mudcats play-by-play guy Patrick Kinas, who also does play-by-play for N.C. State women’s basketball among other duties (I too, now have several jobs.)
The campers are rotating some play-by-play stints on the internet broadcast, and some of them off-air are doing simulations in another box. That, of course, has the potential of ending up like the scene in “The Naked Gun” when Dick Vitale, Dick Enberg, Jim Palmer, Tim McCarver, Dr. Joyce Brothers and the late Messrs. Curt Gowdy and Mel Allen all start commentating at once.
But about the game … well, Carolina wins 6-0.
The Mudcats get to Jay Jackson for a run in the first, as Carson Kainer hits a one-out single to right, advances on Juan Francisco’s infield single to second and later scores on a two-out balk. Continue reading »

FIVE COUNTY STADIUM/ZEBULON Back at the Carolina Mudcats’ game again, seeing if they can right the ship after a 3-8 start in the second half.
Game 1 of their four-game set with the Tennessee Smokies is a sellout and the signs outside the parking lot clearly say “STANDING ROOM ONLY,” but it’s a happy crowd here anticipating the July 4 fireworks show.
At least it’s not ridiculously hot. Grab a pregame Italian sausage and it’s time to go.
The teams are wearing patches saluting Lou Gehrig’s New York Yankees No. 4 number in a promotion about ALS awareness.
The RTP General Assembly Chorus presents the National Anthem, and as always those guys - there are about 30 “barber shop” singers with an average age I’d think over 60 - knock it out of the park. I’m sure in less than a minute, too. If you didn’t hear the word “Grammy” in the intro, any time it goes longer than that can be a big waste of everyone’s time.
Congressman Brad Miller fires the “ceremonial first pitch” and it’s time to play ball.
The Smokies have one local connection, as right-handed reliever Jake Muyco is an alumnus of N.C. State.
And speaking of pitchers, it’s a fine pitchers’ duel from the start. But it all ends up in tears for the home fans, as a ninth-inning rally comes up short in a 7-4 loss in front of a season-best SRO crowd of 8,596. Continue reading »

DBAP/DURHAM It’s Night 2 of my odd journey of covering the Carolina Mudcats from Durham Bulls Athletic Park, where I know I’ve covered more baseball games than any three other print media types combined.
To review, I’m already in the house because I’m covering the Bulls’ series against the Pawtucket Red Sox for the Providence Journal, a good daily newspaper that’s at least hiring “stringers” for its home team’s road games for heaven’s sake. And then whoa! Suddenly I’m also covering the Bulls’ game for Triangle Offense, as something has gone awry elsewhere.
Football coaches talk about “sudden change,” and I guess this is one of those situations.
(This could be fun. You didn’t actually believe that in 31 years of newspaper work I’ve never covered more than one game at a time, did you?)
(SPOILER ALERT: It’s an ugly night for the Mudcats, who end up getting some help from their friends. And the Bulls’ doldrums continue. Bulls box. Mudcats box.) Somehow, Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo (pictured) is keeping a smile through it all.
The press box menu is chicken tenders with tater tots and a vinegary pasta salad. Low-carb dieters are out of luck on that one.
Anyway, it’s really hot here as it usually is in late June.
