DURHAM BULLS ATHLETIC PARK/DURHAM Duke has pulled the same feat twice, this time in Durham.
Last year, Duke lost the first game in the Tobacco Road series in Chapel Hill, but won the series by winning the last two games. This year, the series is in Durham, but the same result comes out on Sunday as Duke wins the finale 5-3.
For the first time in the series, there are no runs scored in the first inning. The first run is scored in the top of the third on of a two-run homer by UNC’s Jesse Wierzbicki.

DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke Blue Devils sprinted to a 14-4 lead in the first seven minutes Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, capitalizing on a series of turnovers and a spate of poor shooting from the field by the visiting Tulsa Golden Hurricane. But then the torpor set in: During the most consistently quiet half this season in Durham, the Devils let Tulsa not only creep within reach during the next 10 minutes but even tie the game at 28-28 late in the first half.
During that span, Duke missed five three-pointers and allowed the Hurricane to move to the basket quickly. In fact, in the first half, Tulsa shot against Duke 35 times, just one attempt shy of a season high against the Devils. Still, though the Hurricane hit a higher percentage from the floor than the Devils, Duke headed into the locker room with a four-point lead.
“I thought we felt we were going to be able to knock them out, and they’re not a team that’s going to get knocked out,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said of the first half after the game. “We looked rushed.”
The start of the second half didn’t look any better: Tulsa’s excellent seven-foot senior center Jerome Jordan began the half with another dunk. Tulsa followed with two free throws from guard Justin Hurtt. But as they’ve often done this season, when this streaky Duke team turned it on, they refused to relent. Over the next six minutes, Duke presented one of its most balanced stretches of basketball yet this season, with points, a steal and an assist from Brian Zoubek, an assist from Lance Thomas, points and an assist from Mason Plumlee, two blocks from Kyle Singler, two three-pointers from Jon Scheyer and strong contributions from Nolan Smith on both ends of the floor. At the nine-minute mark, the Devils were up by 20 points. Continue reading »

CAMERON INDOOR STADIUM/DURHAM Duke returns home after a brief Christmas break, hosting a Big West team that has had a rigorous schedule.
Long Beach State’s schedule is ranked third nationally headed into tonight’s contest.
The Blue Devils take the lead at 19:13 of the first half and never let go, rolling to a 84-63 victory.
Duke now stands 10-1, with its only loss at Wisconsin in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Long Beach drops to one game below .500 with tonight’s loss.
Duke has five players who score in double digits including Jon Scheyer (22), Nolan Smith (19) and Kyle Singler (14). Brian Zoubek notches his third career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Lance Thomas also has 10 points.
Larry Anderson hits 14 to lead three Long Beach players in double figures.

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski:
On the game:
“I thought we beat a good team tonight, a team that’s trained hard, probably harder than anyone in the country. Initially I thought we played great. We let up defensively once we got a really commanding lead and we never got back to the level of defense that we played at the beginning of the game till the end of the game. I thought our two backcourt kids [Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith] were terrific to have 14 assists and 0 turnovers in this game. They have good quickness and they just took good care of the ball. Overall, I thought we played well or else we wouldn’t win. They (Long Beach State) keep a lot of pressure with their quickness. We did a good job on [T.J.] Robinson because he’s actually been 18 and 13 and he’s done it against Kentucky and Notre Dame, West Virginia and UCLA and Clemson. That’s the schedule that these guys have played, so they weren’t in awe of anybody. They weren’t going to back down. I thought, especially in the second half, they played really well. Coming off the break, overall I thought we did well. We did a good job.” Continue reading »

KENAN MEMORIAL STADIUM/CHAPEL HILL — Two Casey Barth field goals and a 3-yard reverse touchdown run by receiver Jheranie Boyd put this game out of reach for the Blue Devils in the second half and UNC ran away 19-6 for its 19th victory in the last 20 games against Duke.
Ryan Houston recorded his first career 100-yard rushing performance, often trucking over the Duke defense straight through the middle to reach 164 yards on the ground on 37 carries. Starter Shaun Draughn left the field on UNC’s first possession after an injury and missed the remainder of the game.
“In the fourth quarter I really felt like they were getting fatigued because I was getting a lot of arm tackles,” Houston said after the game. “I was running through all the tackles, and they weren’t pressing me as much as they were in the first quarter.”

PEARSON CAFETERIA/DURHAM N.C. Central moved its weekly football rouser to a permanent location this week, its brand spanking new cafeteria where Coach Mose Rison (pictured) is participating in the athletic department’s weekly radio show.
It’s going to be a very positive thing for the Eagles if the move turns out to be good luck.
NCCU began its season on a bit of a disappointing note, falling 31-24 to Hampton as the Pirates prevailed because the Eagles made a few more mistakes.
But both the yardage statistics and Rison’s comments are on the same page. The Eagles didn’t get pushed around at all.
“After watching the film carefully on Sunday after returning from Hampton there were some real disappointments,” Rison said. “We thought we played well enough to win the game.”
The Eagles will have to play much better this week to have a chance to keep the fourth quarter interesting, much less pull off an upset.
They’ll travel on Saturday to Liberty, the two-time defending champions of the Big South Conference. The Flames didn’t win their season opener on the road, either, but the opponent was a little more powerful as they lost 33-20 at West Virginia. Continue reading »

N.C. Central will start practice for its Sept. 5 season football opener on Saturday at its field beside O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium, and coach Mose Rison’s football team definitely has a lot going on.
The Eagles, who finished 4-7 last year and were probably a pair of fumbles away from their a winning season in their second campaign in NCAA Division I (Football Championship Subdivision), are preparing for what is probably the most interesting schedule in school history.
Not only are historic staples such as their archrivals from N.C. A&T and Winston-Salem State on the schedule, but they’ll travel to cross-town rival Duke for the first “Bull City Gridiron Classic” and visit the best FCS team in the state when they go to Boone to challenge Appalachian State.
In a couple of weeks the new artificial Mondoturf will be ready to go at O’Kelly-Riddick, where the Eagles will host Morehead State on Sept. 19.
And there’s also the one thing going on that makes anyone’s fall football practice exciting - there’s a hard-fought quarterback battle in progress. Continue reading »
