Every which way you looked Friday night in the Smith Center, another Tar Heel great passed before your eyes.  The night was the perfect fans’ night.  The game of little importance compared to the utter glee present on every face in the building, especially during the tearful video montages celebrating UNC’s 100 years of basketball.

Where to start?

UNC vs. Villanova: A Final Four, Four Factor Preview

Ryan Campbell · 4 Apr 2009, 1:39 AM · Comment

Danny Green challenges UK (Jeremy Lange, Independent Weekly)A week of anticipation has been building up to Saturday’s Final Four match-up between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Villanova Wildcats. The contest has be analyzed from all angles, as is often the case when there are only only three college basketball games remaining in the season.

In the last five days there have been stories written about Tyler Hansbrough’s last hurrah, Villanova’s height issues, Danny Green’s father and Scottie Reynolds’ decision making. However, the statistics and the four factors tell their own story.

The known commodity going into the game is UNC’s offense. Continue reading »

Tar Heels oust Sooners, advance to Final Four

Rob Harrington · 30 Mar 2009, 4:01 PM · Comment

TV/ CBS—It was billed as a clash of the titans between former and present national players of the year Tyler Hansbrough and Blake Griffin, but it was North Carolina’s team that proved dominant.

In Sunday’s Elite Eight mach-up against Oklahoma, the Tar Heels ran out to an early lead and never looked back, beating the Sooners 72-60 and advancing to their second consecutive Final Four. Continue reading »

ACC Tourney–Sunday open thread

In something of a confrontation through negation, yesterday’s UNC-FSU game allowed us to compare the top vote-getters for ACC Player of the Year. Lawson won the award, of course, while FSU’s Toney Douglas finished second, one place ahead of Tyler Hansbrough. How do we assess Lawson and Douglas’ respective merits in this game?

On Lawson’s side: He sits, UNC loses. There’s evidence of his value. Then there’s FSU, which needed every one of Douglas’ 27 points and 38 minutes to knock off the Heels. Considering that UNC likely would have won if Danny Green had shot poorly instead of disastrously (say, 3-12 instead of 1-12), it seems that Douglas wins this round of most-valuableness. Heels sweep Duke, win ACC title

Rob Harrington · 9 Mar 2009, 2:35 PM · 4 Comments

SMITH CENTER/CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina sent its senior class out triumphantly on Sunday evening, besting archrival Duke in a 79-71 dogfight that was unresolved until the final minute and clinching the ACC regular season championship in the process.

It was senior day at the Dean Dome, and Tyler Hansbrough, Danny Green and Bobby Frasor all played their final game on their home court. Juniors Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington may depart for the NBA following this season as well, so clearly the emotional stakes — if not the actual stakes, in terms of the NCAA Tournament — were extremely high for the Tar Heels. Heels survive test in Blacksburg

Rob Harrington · 5 Mar 2009, 8:49 PM · Comment

TV/ESPN — You might excuse Carolina fans if they lost the faith for a second or two on Wednesday night. The Tar Heels, attempting to fend off a desperate Virginia Tech team they couldn’t quite put away, suffered through a very anxious stretch but held on for a 86-78 win on the road that clenched at least a share of the ACC regular season title.

The suspense of the game was typical for a conference road contest, but the way in which the Heels won was a very positive development. To wit, instead of outscoring an opponent, Carolina actually made several key defensive stops and beat a quality team on its home floor despite shooting just 41 percent from the field.

Tar Heels maul Georgia Tech, prepare for huge close to regular season

Rob Harrington · 1 Mar 2009, 8:55 PM · Comment

SMITH CENTER/CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina probably didn’t need a week off to prepare for lowly Georgia Tech, but the Tar Heels used their time away to address several team deficiencies and played with renewed vigor on Saturday afternoon to destroy the Yellow Jackets 104-74.

After the club’s disastrous second half collapse against Maryland a week earlier, the Tar Heels focused on playing better defense and working more effectively on offense, passing up perimeter shots in favor of feeding the post and attacking the offensive glass.

Tyler Hansbrough rebounded from a subpar performance in College Park, lighting up the Yellow Jackets for 28 points (10-for-13 shooting) and 10 rebounds. Danny Green also needed to get back on track, and his 23 points and six boards served as a reminder of how he was playing a month ago.

The rich get richer: Zeller could return Wednesday

Jacob Swiger · 16 Feb 2009, 9:36 PM · Comment

Danny Green challenges UK (Jeremy Lange, Independent Weekly)According to North Carolina head coach Roy Williams’ Monday radio show, Tyler Zeller could potentially return to the lineup Wednesday against N.C. State.

“Right now I would not be surprised if Tyler [Zeller] did play Wednesday night against North Carolina State,” Williams said.

“This is Tyler’s decision,” Williams added.

The full audio can be heard here.

For the Tar Heels, the timing of this announcement could not be much better. The Heels have raced out to two-game lead in the conference despite a depleted lineup due to the departures of Marcus Ginyard and Will Graves for the season and Carolina’s recent struggle to score in the paint against Miami

Tar Heels survive trap game, knock off Miami

Rob Harrington · 16 Feb 2009, 6:09 PM · Comment

TV/ FOX NET—North Carolina had built-in excuses at their disposal heading into their game at Miami on Sunday night. The Heels had beaten hated rival Duke in Durham on Wednesday in a game that required full emotional investment, and star guard Ty Lawson had fallen ill and was running at far less than full speed when UNC invaded Coral Gables to battle Miami.

And that made the club’s 69-65 victory all the more meaningful.

What’s up with UNC’s defense?

Rob Harrington · 5 Feb 2009, 7:42 PM · Comment

On the surface, it may sound odd for any concern to be directed at UNC. After all, the Tar Heels didn’t get destroyed by anyone (cough, cough, Duke and Wake) on Wednesday night.

In fact, the Heels scored more points (108) versus Maryland on Tuesday than the Devils and Deacons did combined in their humbling defeats — to Clemson and Miami respectively — the following day.

Junior guard Wayne Ellington’s slump is a relic of the January past, and his 34 points against the Terrapins represented a season high. Meanwhile, Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson and Danny Green also continue to play at an extremely high level. The quartet scored 95 points against Maryland and made it look easy, helping UNC shoot 51 percent as a team.

So, what’s the problem?

That would be team defense. Contrary to the perception of many fans, the Heels actually have defended fairly well this season. Recently, they were ranked No. 12 in the country in defensive efficiency — and that’s the glaring issue here in early February.

After a stretch of games that included the narrow victory over Florida State and a pair of easy-yet-sloppy victories over N.C. State and Maryland, Carolina now slots in at No. 21 in defensive rankings, a vital stat heading toward the postseason.

The sunny diagnosis of UNC’s porous defense is that the Heels simply aren’t keeping focus when they open big early leads. They gave up 91 points to the Terps but still won by 17, and it’s human nature to dig in with a little less intensity when the competition effectively has been decided. Against the Wolfpack, the Heels held their opponent to 32 percent shooting in the first half and, after opening up a wide margin, allowed that number to rise to 53 percent in the second frame

On the other hand, No. 1 Connecticut has played dominant basketball of late yet ranks as the nation’s No. 5 offense and No. 7 defense. It’s Carolina’s lack of balance that has Roy Williams and the fanbase so concerned.

Keep in mind that both of last season’s finalists — Kansas and Memphis — sported extremely high rankings in both categories similar to what UConn is doing this season. Until Wednesday night Duke also boasted elite standing on both sides of the court, but the Devils’ horrid offensive performance against Clemson sent them plummeting to No. 19 offensively, although they remain No. 1 overall with the Huskies second and UNC third.

Back to Carolina, the Heels defended so poorly against Maryland that during one timeout, Williams actually stood speechless in the huddle with his players. It wasn’t just that the Terrapins were scoring; they were beating Carolina downcourt on a recurring basis.

One beautiful aspect of the looming UNC/Duke showdown next Wednesday is that both teams will be challenged to address their obvious weaknesses. Carolina is unlikely to score big numbers against Duke, Clemson notwithstanding, and thus the Heels will need to contain a Blue Devils offense that is sure to be amplified with maximum energy and emotion.

In the meantime, Carolina will host Virginia on Saturday afternoon in a game that should be a relatively easy tuneup in preparation for the Devils.
