Heavily favored Tar Heels face a must-win game today against NCCU

Mike Potter · 14 Mar 2010, 12:01 AM · Comment

uncdegra1Eleven ACC women’s basketball teams played their final game before the post-season tournaments at some point during the ACC Tournament last week.

Duke has, of course, clinched an NCAA bid as the conference’s regular-season champion and three other teams - Florida State, Virginia and Georgia Tech - seem to be resting easy about their spot on the board when the NCAA Tournament bracket comes out tomorrow night.

Nearly half a dozen more may or may not be on a “bubble.” Only one has something left to add to the argument.

That’s UNC, which for the second straight year will play a home game on the same day as the ACC men’s tournament final.

Last season it was against South Dakota, and although the Coyotes gave the Tar Heels a good scare at the Smith Center UNC didn’t have to win.

It does today. Sylvia Hatchell’s club is going to be a really big favorite in its 3:30 home contest against N.C. Central in the Eagles’ final game of the season, but the Tar Heels absolutely have to emerge victorious to avoid giving any naysayers on the selection committee a lot of fodder.

nccumill1 Give the Eagles that bronze medal.

N.C. Central finished third in the Longwood women’s basketball tournament, taking out Seattle 62-58 behind 24 points from Joanna Miller (pictured).

Latoya Bennett added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Joli Robinson’s Eagles (11-17), who have their best record during their three seasons on the five-year transition track from NCAA Division II to Division I. Danielle DeBerry added 10 points for NCCU.

Ashley Brown led Seattle (6-24) with 21 points, followed by Tatiana Heck with 16 and Elle Kerfoot 12.

The Eagles end their season on March 14 at UNC.

Eagles visit Longwood tourney today

Mike Potter · 6 Mar 2010, 2:01 AM · Comment

nccumillIndependent college basketball teams obviously don’t play in conference tournaments, and many of them aren’t eligible for NCAA post-season play.

So Longwood (8-19) has put together an end-of-season mirror event on its home court, and N.C. Central is part of it.

The Eagles (10-16), who beat the Lancers 74-66 Feb. 26 in Durham, will take them on again today at about 4:30 p.m. at Willett Hall.

That follows a 2 p.m. contest between easy tournament favorite Florida Gulf Coast (22-6) and Seattle (6-22), both of whom like NCCU are still on the reclassification track from NCAA Division II to Division I.

Championship and consolation games are on Sunday.

That won’t end the season for NCCU, as the Eagles will visit UNC on March 14 in the Tar Heels’ final game before their post-season tournament.

Women’s roundup: Important games for Duke, UNC, NCCU tonight

Mike Potter · 26 Feb 2010, 2:11 AM · Comment

unchatchCARMICHAEL ARENA/CHAPEL HILL UNC hasn’t had a women’s basketball season typical of its recent tradition.

But Tar Heel coach Sylvia Hatchell (pictured) said there’s no reason the redemption can’t start tonight.

Tonight at 6:30, the Tar Heels will be on the road looking to complete a season sweep of a Georgia Tech team ranked No. 22 in the country. It’s the opener of a TV doubleheader on Fox Sports South, which will conclude with No. 6 Duke hosting No. 21 Virginia at Cameron Indoor Stadium at 8:30.

The Duke game is one of two women’s contests in Durham tonight, as N.C. Central hosts Longwood on the Eagles’ Senior Night. Duke alumna Wanisha Smith is an assistant coach for Longwood.

Hatchell’s Tar Heels were the media’s preseason picks to win the ACC regular-season title, albeit before All-America candidate Jessica Breland was determined to be out for the season with lymphoma. Breland is almost ready to play, but will take a redshirt and do her senior season in 2010-11.

And the last time UNC played Georgia Tech - that in the Tar Heels’ conference opener - it was 13-1 after the 89-78 victory. Now Hatchell’s club is 17-9, 5-7 in conference play and scratching to try to wrap up an at-large NCAA berth. Continue reading »

Eagles try for big upset at Wake tonight

Mike Potter · 22 Feb 2010, 12:01 AM · Comment

nccumill2N.C. Central looks for a big upset in women’s basketball tonight, while host Wake Forest looks to get back on the winning track before the final weekend of ACC action.

The Eagles will have five more chances to equal their 10-win mark of last season, and with a two-game winning streak tonight’s tough assignment at Joel Coliseum is the first shot.

Wake, which will look to rebound from its overtime loss to visiting UNC on Thursday, has already locked up at least a .500 season and wants to get some momentum heading into next week’s ACC Tournament.

Deacon head coach Mike Petersen is one game above .500 in his tenure at Wake Forest. Wake has a pair of freshmen from the Triangle on its roster in Asia Williams from Durham Hillside and Lakevia Boykin from Southeast Raleigh.

Eagles win another home PinkZone game, get revenge on Chicago State

nccublan2McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM Now it’s N.C. Central’s turn for a “PinkZone” women’s basketball game.

The Eagles have had good fortune in their baby-pink outfits, never having lost a game while wearing them.

Today’s opponent is Chicago State of the (10-16) of the Great West Conference, which has become a holding area for teams in Division I transition as well as a couple whose geographic situation makes it difficult to find any other conference affiliation at all. CSU won the teams’ first meeting 68-47 in the Eagles’ first game in Chicago.

NCCU (8-15) has won eight of its last 14 games and once again seems to be playing its best basketball in February. The Eagles are playing their first home contest after six straight on the road, and with a 5-3 record here are hoping to clinch another winning record on the home floor.

The Eagles get revenge today, using a huge final 10 minutes to win 77-64. Continue reading »

Blanks (pictured) hit five 3-pointers to lead NCCU (8-15), which played without leading scorer Joanna Miller. Latoya Bennett added 13 points with seven rebounds and Danielle DeBerry 12 with eight assists for NCCU.

NCCU women visit similar foe tonight

Mike Potter · 16 Feb 2010, 12:01 AM · Comment

nccumill1N.C. Central will face an opponent in similar shoes in women’s basketball today.

The Eagles (7-15) will be in Clinton, S.C., for a 5 p.m. game against Presbyterian, which is also in the third of the five-year transition from Division II to Division I.

It’s “Pack the House” night for the Blue Hose, with a men’s game against UNC Asheville at 7:30.

The Blue Hose are already playing a Big South regular-season schedule, but since like NCCU they will not be eligible for NCAA Tournament play until 2011-12 they will not play in that conference tournament.

NCCU visits other Eagles tonight

Mike Potter · 9 Feb 2010, 12:01 AM · Comment

nccumillN.C. Central goes looking for a road win tonight in women’s basketball, and although Joli Robinson’s club is almost always an underdog on the road it shouldn’t be a prohibitive one this time.

NCCU (7-14) will take on Big South Conference member Winthrop (8-14) in the schools’ first meeting in women’s basketball. Both teams are nicknamed “Eagles.”

The 7 p.m. contest will be at the Winthrop Coliseum, which hosted several ACC women’s basketball tournaments in the 1990s.

Joanna Miller (pictured) is NCCU’s leading scorer, while Shanice Cole leads Winthrop in scoring, rebounding and assists. Continue reading »
