WAKEMED SOCCER PARK/ CARY—On a night when thunder and lightning knocked out an hour of power and heavy rain unequivocally defined the term fair weather fan for several dozen families who sheepishly made their mini-vanning way home, the Charleston Battery and Carolina RailHawks huffed and banged their way through 90 minutes of football.
Carolina entered the game on top of the USL-1 table and had never lost to their Southern Derby rivals, posting a 7-0 record over the past two seasons. Keeper Caleb Patterson Sewell had not conceded a goal in his RailHawks tenure and Martin Rennie was able to field his strongest side with the exception of Josh Gardner who had picked up the flu in Portland. 4,500+ fans braved the game-time tempest and were rewarded with cool weather and eerie, ominous skies. It looked like a promising night for the home side.

The last remaining major question mark from last year’s RailHawks squad has been forward Dan Antoniuk. Now it seems he signed very recently with the Chicago Storm of the four-team Xtreme Soccer League.
According to this news item of Feb. 20, 2009, Antoniuk joined the team for that day’s game against the Detroit Ignition and was expected to suit up as soon as he passed the physical. The Storm is two-thirds of the way through its season, which ends April 5.
The 6-foot-3 bruiser played for the ’Hawks last year after a fine 2007 with the Atlanta Silverbacks in which he notched 23 points and was a finalist for USL-1 MVP.
He didn’t achieve the same level of effectiveness in 2008 with the offensively challenged RailHawks, but he and mid-season addition Hamed Diallo did establish a groove late in the year.
We didn’t see Antoniuk in camp when we visited two weeks ago.
The RailHawks, with the recently signed Paul Ritchie, now have 21 players on the roster.

Daniel Paladini, foreground, in undated photo
In another addition to a burgeoning midfield, the RailHawks added Daniel Paladini, veteran of the MLS side Chivas USA. Paladini, 24 years old, appeared in eight games for Chivas last year, starting five and scoring one goal (that’s only four fewer than teammate Sacha Kljestan!). (h/t to Jarrett for the first video link)
Paladini has spent his entire career in California, from his hometown of Northridge to his alma mater Cal State-Northridge to his drafting by the Los Angeles Galaxy to his most recent stint with Chivas.
It’s the second signing, however, that catches us by surprise: a high-profile keeper, and one who—like recently signed defender Mark Schulte—has a history with Martin Rennie. Continue reading »

Aaron King
Aaron King, a second-team All-American his senior season at N.C. State, whose professional career seems to be picking up speed after early struggles to find his footing, signed with the RailHawks, the team announced today
King comes to the ’Hawks today after two productive seasons with the USL-1 Charleston Battery. Last year, he appeared in 35 of the team’s 38 league and non-league games, starting eight of them. Over the same span, he scored six goals and finished fourth on the team in points.
His pro career began in 2006 when he was taken the Los Angeles in the fourth round of the MLS Superdraft, but was quickly dealt to the Colorado Rapids. He spent a season with the Rapids without a single game appearance before arriving at Charleston.
His signing means the ’Hawks have two confirmed striker signings, with the returning Hamed Diallo being the other. We await word on Dan Antoniuk, the tall, aggressive forward who struggled for much of his first season in Cary, after a superlative season in Atlanta in 2007.

Prior to last Saturday’s home finale, the Carolina RailHawks announced their team awards, citing five players for excellence during a rocky season that nonetheless ended with a 5-2-1 record over its last eight games, good for 16 points.
Probably the biggest surprise was the choice for Most Valuable Player: midfielder Matt Watson. Continue reading »
