With the ACC regular season wrapped up, the first and second all-ACC teams were announced Monday, including 13 players from the Triangle.
Duke
The Blue Devils’ high-octane offense was led by quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, who was voted on the second team. Lewis’ primary target, Donovan Varner, made first team and led the league with 5.4 catchers per game.
Kicker Will Snyderwine made the second team as well as linebacker Vincent Rey.
N.C. State
Glaringly absent from the selections is quarterback Russell Wilson, who led the Wolfpack to a dramatic win over UNC Saturday and accounted for 35 touchdowns on the season.
Tight end George Bryan made the first team, and defensive end Willie Young, who recorded eight sacks this season, was on the second team.
North Carolina
Four North Carolina players, the most of any school, earned first-team honors as voted on by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. Defensive end Robert Quinn, linebacker Quan Sturdivant, cornerback Kendric Burney and safety Deunta Williams were all selected to the first team.
Burney picked off five passes this season and racked up 200 return yards to reach second in interception return yardage in ACC history.
Defensive tackle Marvin Austin, who is considering turning pro after this season, and linebacker Bruce Carter, who told the media he would be returning for his senior season, both made the second defensive team.
UNC’s only offensive selection came in kicker Casey Barth, and the Tar Heels’ four first-team selections are the most since the 1997 season (six).

CARTER-FINLEY STADIUM/RALIEGH — “N.C. State here we go,” a man dressed all in red shouted as he exited Carter-Finley Stadium, his team having just defeated its bitter rival for the third straight year. “TOB (Tom O’Brien) 3-0. Here we go. Butch Davis, what do you have?”
“Stop, you’re making a spectacle,” his girlfriend told him sharply.
“But this is all we’ve got,” he sheepishly replied.
He’s right, N.C. State’s season is done, and Davis’ team now moves on to a yet-to-be-determined bowl game, but what they’ve got matters one heck of a lot. Ask O’Brien who said after the game this was his most challenging season in a three decades as a college coach. Or talk to one of the nine seniors on the team who end their careers victorious. Sure, on its face this 28-27 win that closed the books on a 5-7 season might not seem like a big deal, but boy is it.
“We could play this team in the McDonald’s parking lot and it would be a bowl game,” wide receiver Owen Spencer said.
The odds seemed long at halftime. UNC had dominated offensively scoring touchdowns of 35, 40 and 70 yards on the way to a 24-14 lead. The Wolfpack’s much-maligned defense turned things around in the second frame, and quarterback Russell WIlson was able to create big plays of his own, twice finding Spencer deep over the middle for scores. Senior Alan-Michael Cash blocked a Casey Barth 38-yard field goal attempt with 4:45 to play and N.C. State was able to pick up key first downs before giving the ball back to Yates on the 28-yard line with just 23 seconds to play. Yates overthrow Greg Little on a corner route, and Clem Johnson picked the ball to seal the win. Continue reading »

KENAN MEMORIAL STADIUM/CHAPEL HILL — With UNC leading 23-17 midway through the fourth quarter and Miami threatening to take the lead, Kendric Burney (pictured) leaped and snagged his third interception of the game, resulting in a wacky touchdown return.
Burney, who became the first Tar Heel with three picks in a game since Dre Bly in 1996, appeared to lateral the ball forward to teammate Melvin Williams. Williams then carried the ball to the endzone where video replay showed he was stripped after crossing the goal line.
“The play before that, the interception where I scored, Melvin was asking me why I didn’t pitch him the ball,” Burney said after the game. ”So it was funny that I pitched it to him there, cause he stood there for like half a second.”
The officials ruled that Burney fumbled instead of pitched the ball, which gave UNC a 13-point lead.
“To me it looked like he pitched it forward, but I can’t get involved with it,” Miami coach Randy Shannon said. ”We could have made something happen on those other plays and it would have made a difference.”
Jacory Harris led Miami back down the field and brought the score back within six points. UNC’s Ryan Houston and Greg Little rushed the ball relentlessly on the following Tar Heel possession and took nearly six minutes off the game clock before Casey Barth made his fourth field goal of the game.

KENAN MEMORIAL STADIUM/CHAPEL HILL — Two Casey Barth field goals and a 3-yard reverse touchdown run by receiver Jheranie Boyd put this game out of reach for the Blue Devils in the second half and UNC ran away 19-6 for its 19th victory in the last 20 games against Duke.
Ryan Houston recorded his first career 100-yard rushing performance, often trucking over the Duke defense straight through the middle to reach 164 yards on the ground on 37 carries. Starter Shaun Draughn left the field on UNC’s first possession after an injury and missed the remainder of the game.
“In the fourth quarter I really felt like they were getting fatigued because I was getting a lot of arm tackles,” Houston said after the game. “I was running through all the tackles, and they weren’t pressing me as much as they were in the first quarter.”

UNC needs WR Greg Little to continue carrying the offense if the Heels are going to reach the postseason.
This Saturday, UNC and Duke square off in a game affecting the postseason for each team, and as has been the case lately, Wolfpack fans are left out of the media hype.
Here’s the twist: It’s a football game.
Several storylines are floating around this week, including Thaddeus Lewis’ stellar play at quarterback, Duke coach David Cutcliffe’s obvious impact on a program that considered a four-win season in 2008 a success, and the possible emergence last Thursday of what some would call an offense (Where the heck has Greg Little been hiding?).
The rivalry game between these two schools has been fierce the past several seasons without much of a higher overall significance looming. But is this what we have to look forward to from now on? An annual Triangle football game with conference and bowl significance?
It’s possible, but it will likely be a long time before the Triangle spits out a team of real national importance. As for now, Saturday’s winner has an inside track to finish the season with high expectations for 2010.

T.J. Yates made up for costly interceptions with clutch throws late in the fourth.
TV/ESPN — Remember when Connor Barth lined up and nailed a a 42-yard field goal to beat No. 4 Miami in Chapel Hill as time expired?
Well, fast forward five years later and Casey Barth continued the family legacy and made two field goals in the fourth quarter against No. 14 Virginia Tech, including the game-winning boot as the clock ticked to zero.
The kick snapped an eight-year losing streak to ranked opponents on the road and mirrored the elder Barth’s game-winner. It wasn’t pretty and and just sneaked its way through the uprights.
For the first time all season, UNC’s offense showed heart, rallying from a T.J. Yates interception that looked to seal a Virginia Tech fourth quarter rally.
But instead, Yates directed a 16-play drive, including clutch catches from Greg Little and Zack Pianalto. The drive ended with Casey Barth’s first made field goal of the game, and stole 8:59 off the clock and left the Hokies with little time to win the game.
After the ensuing kickoff, freshman Hokie running back Ryan Williams took a handoff on third-and-7 and lost a costly fumble. UNC defensive back Deunta Williams recovered and returned the ball inside the Hokie 25-yard line, allowing the UNC offense to run the clock down and score the winning three points. Ryan Williams had a towel over his head the rest of the game and was comforted by UNC linebacker Quan Sturdivant after time expired.

Kenan Memorial Stadium/Chapel Hill -- UNC got off to a slow start but eventually clobbered FCS opponent The Citadel 40-6.
The Tar Heels, led by Shaun Draughn’s 118 yards on the ground, ran over the Bulldogs with 261 yards rushing, the most rushing yards in the Butch Davis era and the most since the Duke game in 2004.
“It didn’t even feel like I had that many yards,” Draughn said after the game.
Backup running back Ryan Houston added 45 yards on six carries and scored two touchdowns on the ground. Houston provided tough inside running to complement Draugn’s speed and appears to have improved his own speed this offseason.
