DBAP/ DURHAM—I missed more than two innings of last night’s 5-2 Bulls win over Charlotte. I spent half an inning in the visitor’s clubhouse as part of the crowded media contingent interviewing the Knights’ Jake Peavy (pictured) following his four-inning, 67-pitch outing against the Bulls, his second rehab start for the Chicago White Sox, and another two innings waiting for that interview. It was much like the game that rehabbing Tampa lefty Scott Kazmir started for the Bulls a couple of months ago, when we were whisked down into the bowels of the DBAP for a mid-game interview with a pitcher.
Both times, I was happy to do this—it’s not every day that you get to talk to one of the dozen or so best active pitchers on planet Earth—but I have to say that I got very antsy in the administrative lobby while watching the ballgame on a television feed as Peavy threw a supplementary bullpen session. All that did was make me wish I was seeing the action firsthand rather than on a screen. I suppose that my reaction means that, for better or worse, I’ve become more interested in the fortunes of the Durham Bulls than I am about pretty much any other baseball being played.

Carlos Torres is armed and dangerous.
To recap the Buck Showalter Theorem and modify it to the Triple-A season: You can count on losing about 50 games a year and winning about 50, regardless of how you prepare; it’s what you do with the other 44 that determine whether you’re playoff-bound or a cellar dweller. It’s easy enough to categorize Durham’s
11-2 loss at Charlotte last night by glancing at Matt DeSalvo’s pitching line in the box score: the Durham starter was tagged for nine runs in just 2 2/3 innings; this one was lost early. Each of DeSalvo’s last four starts has been poor, and you can’t help wondering if the current membership of the International League (Hitters’ Division) has now seen enough of his application for readmission and has initiated rejection proceedings. The 29-year-old has to start showing some new and consistent efficacy, like his teammate Jason Cromer has, in order to show the Rays that there’s anything interesting left there. But although DeSalvo assured the Bulls of defeat last night, the game might have been over before it even began.

DBAP/ DURHAM—Another start for Carlos Hernandez, another tail-kicking: He went 4 2/3 innings tonight and allowed ten hits and five runs (four earned) in the Bulls’ rain-shortened 8-3 loss to Charlotte. Oddly, he seemed to be throwing harder than he has so far this season, touching 92 once on the scoreboard radar gun. But the result was the same: a lot of his fastballs were punched around by the Knights’ batsmen, who swung and missed only six times at Hernandez’s 96 pitches.
By contrast, his counterpart, Carlos Torres, got five swings and misses in one twelve-pitch sequence in the fourth inning alone, fanning Justin Ruggiano and Chris Richard around a flyout by Matt Joyce. Torres went five scoreless frames tonight, with an oddly symmetrical look: he gave up two consecutive singles in the first inning, stranded both runners, then kept the Bulls hitless until the fifth, when he gave up two more consecutive singles — and stranded both runners. All told, he struck out five and walked one in beating the Bulls for the second time in less than a week (he handcuffed them on Wednesday, too, allowing four hits and one run in six innings).
