NCCU can’t overcome Gardner-Webb’s 6-6 center, falls to 0-4 on the season

Mike Potter · 22 Nov 2009, 5:50 PM · Comment

nccumill3McLENDON-McDOUGALD GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central is still looking for its first win of the women’s basketball season, and today the Eagles get their second straight home game.

Today’s opponent is Gardner-Webb (2-1), which was picked in preseason to finish third in the Big South Conference. The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ only loss so far has been to Houston.

NCCU (0-3) fought gamely in its last contest Wednesday night against Campbell, falling behind by over 20 points before recovering to make it close. But the Camels dominated down the stretch in a 79-63 win.

The Eagles played Gardner-Webb last season in Boiling Springs, winning 73-60.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs’ best player may be Northern High alumna Margaret Roundtree, whose older sister Tonia played for the Eagles a couple of years ago. GWU also has a big presence inside in 6-6 Lithuanian Sandra Vaitkute, who played her first two seasons at Maine.

The most accomplished player on the NCCU roster, sophomore forward Chasidy Williams, is still not playing because of an undisclosed medical situation. Williams is day-to-day.

And although the game is competitive it turns out to be a tough day for the Eagles, as Gardner-Webb wins 66-55 despite 22 points from the Eagles’ Joanna Miller (pictured). Continue reading »

Moton gets his first career win as Eagles split basketball doubleheader

Mike Potter · 18 Nov 2009, 11:07 PM · Comment

nccugranMcLENDON-McDOUGALD GYM/DURHAM It’s the home opener for both basketball teams at N.C. Central, and each is still looking for its first victory of the season after two road losses.

For the men’s team under first-year head coach LeVelle Moton, about all that has been established is that the Eagles aren’t ready for the ACC. So far they’ve played a killer schedule. But they’ll be clear favorites tonight when they take the floor against Division III N.C. Wesleyan (0-1).

Forward Lamar Pittman will continue to sit out tonight as he recovers from his ACL injury of last fall. The Eagles are not good early, but shrug off a double-digit deficit to prevail 85-70 behind 25 points from T.J. Granger (pictured). Continue reading »

The women’s team will still be shorthanded as Chasidy Williams, the leading returning scorer from last season is on the injury list and unable to go.

Eagles’ second game in Maryland barely easier than the opener

Mike Potter · 16 Nov 2009, 11:48 PM · Comment

nccubennThe second half of N.C. Central’s women’s basketball road trip to Maryland didn’t go much better than the first.

Georgien Williams had a game-high 21points, leading Morgan State to a 75-38 romp over the Eagles at Hill Field House.

Corin Adams added 14 points and Erin Hawkins 12 for the Bears (1-1), who led 34-19 at halftime.

Latoya Bennett (pictured) and Brittany Myers had 10 points each for NCCU (0-2).

The Bears hit seven 3-pointers to just two for NCCU.

The Eagles will look for their first win of the season on Wednesday, when they host Campbell at 5:30 p.m. at McLendon-McDougald Gym. The women’s contest precedes a men’s game between the Eagles an N.C. Wesleyan.

Eagles have a much better chance to win in Game 2 at Morgan State

Mike Potter · 16 Nov 2009, 12:33 AM · Comment

nccumill2N.C. Central plays the more manageable half of its women’s basketball road trip to the state of Maryland today at 5:30, when the Eagles visit former and future MEAC foe Morgan State.

The teams split a pair of meetings last season, with each team winning by double digits on the road. The Eagles and Bears will play only once this season.

NCCU opened its season on Saturday night with an 88-39 loss at Maryland, with Joanna Miller (pictured) scoring 15 points in her career debut for the Eagles. Morgan State also got off to a rough start, falling 85-68 at UNC Greensboro on Saturday.

The Eagles will play their home opener on Wednesday at 5:30 against Campbell.

Eagles visit Maryland for women’s hoop opener, and the result is no surprise

Mike Potter · 15 Nov 2009, 1:12 AM · Comment

nccumill1N.C. Central had a tough assignment in its season-opening women’s basketball game at Maryland, and the Eagles will pretty much have to chalk up the visit to experience.

Lynetta Kizer’s 23 points led four players in double figures for the Terps - who are ranked No. 21 in the coaches’ poll - en route to an 88-39 win over the Eagles in the teams’ first meeting Saturday night at the Comcast Center.

Tianna Hawkins added 15 points, Diandra Tchatchouang 11 and Lori Bjork 10 for Maryland.

Freshman Joanna Miller scored 15 points in her first collegiate game for NCCU, while Latoya Bennett chipped in seven with four rebounds.

The Eagles will play another game in Maryland, on Monday night at Morgan State, before returning home on Wednesday to take on Campbell.

Both NCCU basketball teams face tough assignments at ACC arenas

Mike Potter · 14 Nov 2009, 2:49 AM · Comment

nccurobiBoth of N.C. Central’s basketball teams are getting tough challenges today, as they’ll visit two different ACC schools.

LeVelle Moton will try again for his first win as a collegiate head coach as the Eagle men’s team (0-1) visits Miami at 4 p.m. in the Hurricanes’ season opener.

The task may be even more daunting for the women’s club coached by Joli Robinson (pictured), as the Eagles visit Maryland - ranked No. 21 in the coaches’ poll - at 7 p.m. in the season opener for both teams. That is part of NCCU’s two-day trip to the Old Line State, with the Eagles also visiting Morgan State on Monday night.

NCCU’s teams will both return home Wednesday night for a doubleheader at McLendon-McDougald Gym. That night Robinson’s team will host Campbell at 5:30 p.m., followed by Moton’s team taking on Division III N.C. Wesleyan.
