UNC’s Marvin Austin Tweets his return (Update Jan. 2)

Jacob Swiger · 1 Jan 2010, 8:47 PM · Comment

Junior Tar Heel defensive tackle Marvin Austin announced via Twitter his intention to return for his final season of eligibility.

if u were wondering…….I will be a tarheel for 2010!!!!!!!

The junior was projected to be either a first or second round pick in the upcoming NFL draft.  Austin’s return ensures another likely strong defense in 2010, especially if both linebackers Bruce Carter and Quan Sturdivant decide to return along with the experienced secondary.

The Heels finished sixth best in the country in total yards allowed.

Update: Both cornerback Kendric Burney and linebacker Bruce Carter Tweeted Saturday morning their return to the Tar Heels next season.

With the ACC regular season wrapped up, the first and second all-ACC teams were announced Monday, including 13 players from the Triangle.

Duke

The Blue Devils’ high-octane offense was led by quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, who was voted on the second team. Lewis’ primary target, Donovan Varner, made first team and led the league with 5.4 catchers per game.

Kicker Will Snyderwine made the second team as well as linebacker Vincent Rey.

N.C. State

Glaringly absent from the selections is quarterback Russell Wilson, who led the Wolfpack to a dramatic win over UNC Saturday and accounted for 35 touchdowns on the season.

Tight end George Bryan made the first team, and defensive end Willie Young, who recorded eight sacks this season, was on the second team.

North Carolina

Four North Carolina players, the most of any school, earned first-team honors as voted on by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. Defensive end Robert Quinn, linebacker Quan Sturdivant, cornerback Kendric Burney and safety Deunta Williams were all selected to the first team.

Burney picked off five passes this season and racked up 200 return yards to reach second in interception return yardage in ACC history.

Defensive tackle Marvin Austin, who is considering turning pro after this season, and linebacker Bruce Carter, who told the media he would be returning for his senior season, both made the second defensive team.

UNC’s only offensive selection came in kicker Casey Barth, and the Tar Heels’ four first-team selections are the most since the 1997 season (six).

UNC 42, Georgia Southern 12: Questions linger after second half blunders

The linebackers forced three turnovers including Bruce Carter's interception return (Picture by Rob Rowe)

Kenan Memorial Stadium/Chapel Hill — So much for not forcing turnovers.

UNC’s famous (or infamous depending on your perspective) linebacker trio combined for three out of the six turnovers — six being the most turnovers forced since the Duke game in 1999.

Those three turnovers churned out 21 points and put the Golden Eagles out of this game before halftime as UNC rolled 42-12.

“We try to do that every week but it hasn’t been happening, but this week it happened,” linebacker Quan Sturdivant said. “So we are going to try to continue to do this every week … everybody wants to do it, everybody wants a piece of the action.”

The defense also cloaked yet another average performance by the offense. UNC managed to gain only 289 yards with the majority coming in the first half.

“It’s a positive step, but I still want to take a look at the film and see if we did some of the things that I think we did,” UNC coach Butch Davis said. “The only way that an offense can grow is to have the same guys playing together week after week after week after week.” Continue reading »

Halftime UNC 42, Georgia Southern 7: Linebackers take turns feasting on Eagles

Yates

Kenan Memorial Stadium/Chapel Hill —  UNC’s linebackers stole the show in the first half as each starter forced a turnover.

The fifth longest fumble return in school history pushed the Heels ahead by 14, and linebacker Zach Brown intercepted Lee Chapple on the ensuing possession to put this game out of reach early for the Golden Eagles.

And to make matters worse for Georgia Southern, Bruce Carter picked off one of those pesky bubble screens and returned it 41 yards to make it 35-7.

UNC converted four Georgia Southern turnovers into 28 points.  The offense, meanwhile, didn’t exactly run the Golden Eagles off the field but put together an impressive touchdown scoring drive with six seconds to play.

UNC 12, UConn 10: Heels escape pesky Huskies on safety

Jacob Swiger · 12 Sep 2009, 4:15 PM · Comment

TJ YatesTV/ESPNU — No. 19-ranked North Carolina beat unranked UConn, a team picked to finish in the bottom tier of the Big East, on a holding penalty.

Let that sink in for a moment.  UNC’s defense bailed out its predictable offense that briefly turned it on in the fourth quarter, rallying from a 10-point deficit to tie the game.

UConn offensive lineman Dan Ryan committed the penalty in UConn’s own endzone after the Heels pushed the Huskies back to a third-and-23 situation.  The penalty combined with the Huskies’ inability to move the ball after starting quarterback, Zach Frazer, went down with an injury gave Carolina enough of an opening to rally for the win.

But it would’ve been worse if Carolina’s defense hadn’t shown up.  Charles Brown forced a fumble and picked off a pass in the first half to end UConn scoring drives that would’ve put the Heels even more in a hole.

UNC at UConn preview: Huskies try to run Heels like it’s the Iditarod

Jacob Swiger · 10 Sep 2009, 7:30 PM · Comment

No. 19 UNC (1-0) at UConn (1-0)

[12 p.m., Sept. 12, Rentschler Field]

ESPNU

Husky

UNC hopes UConn is as cuddly as this guy.

UNC travels to East Hartford, Conn., to face the UConn Huskies; the second year in a row the teams have met.  In 2008, UNC pummeled No. 24-ranked UConn 38-12, despite NFL first-round pick Donald Brown rushing for 161 yards.

The Tar Heels thrashed an FCS team 40-6 in week one and must adjust to BCS-caliber speed, especially before facing tough games against ECU and Georgia Tech.

UConn, meanwhile, beat a solid Ohio team in week one 23-16 and showed little drop-off from the loss of Brown.  Both Andre Dixon and Jordan Todman gained 100 or more yards on the ground for the Huskies.

Key stats: Three — that’s exactly how many punts Bruce Carter famously blocked against the Huskies last season and is the No. 1 reason why the game wasn’t even close.  Don’t expect Carter to get his paws on any this time as UConn will be keying for him on punt protection.  Instead, this could set up for big returns from Da’Norris Searcy or Kendric Burney or even allow other special team players to get to the punter.

30 vs. 259:  The Citadel scrapped together only 30 rushing yards against Carolina’s front seven — earning praise from the Bulldogs’ coach Kevin Higgins, who said the Tar Heels were just as good as Florida’s front seven.

The Huskies, on the other hand, piled up 259 yards on the ground against Ohio.  Dixon and Todman will test UNC’s experienced linebacker corps led by Quan Sturdivant.  If UNC can’t stop the run, UConn quarterback Zach Frazer could be in for a big day picking apart one-on-one coverage.

Best message board tidbit on the game: From a UNC fan on UConn’s Scout.com football forum:  ”Oh yes your stadium that is like an hour from your campus, and it’s a noon game.   I’m really scared about that atmosphere.”

UConn fan’s response:  ”You’ll see … now how about you run along and teach one of your kids/siblings how to brush their tooth.”

UNC fan’s response:  ”Yeah you got it all mixed up; State fans are the ones with no teeth.”

Take notes, North Carolinians.  We’re lucky if we have more than one tooth!

Butch Davis’ Wednesday quotes

Jacob Swiger · 9 Sep 2009, 6:15 PM · Comment

Butch DavisUNC coach Butch Davis had his weekly ACC teleconference Wednesday.  The full audio can be heard here, and highlights follow below.

Davis on UConn’s offense: “Although they lost Donald Brown, who was a first round draft choice at running back, they’ve got two young men that are very, very talented and probably possess more homerun-hitting ability than Donald Brown did.  The challenge that their offense poses is that they’ve added some elements to their offense that they didn’t have a year ago.”

On playing on the road: “It’s a significantly different challenge for our football team to go on the road and play against a much more talented football team.”

On playing freshmen: “If they’re young men that can go in and help you win games and it’s going to really enhance their development, then I think you give them that particular opportunity.  Sometimes it’s born out of necessity.”

On Bruce Carter blocking punts: “Once you develop a reputation you kind of become a marked man.  Everyone knows who you are and where you are and that you possess that kind of capability.  We can already see evidence of the fact that University of Connecticut has changed dramatically their punt protection unit.”

On UConn running back Andre Dixon: “As ironic as it is that Donald Brown was a first-round draft choice, he actually wasn’t the starter a couple of years ago. Andre Dixon was the starter ahead of him, and he got injured, and it opened the door for Brown to come in and play.  So as recently as two or three years ago, their coaching staff felt like Andre Dixon was a better running back than a guy that went in the first round last year.”

Postgame report and audio: Heels blast Bulldogs 40-6

Jacob Swiger · 5 Sep 2009, 11:17 PM · Comment

Kenan Memorial Stadium/Chapel Hill -- UNC got off to a slow start but eventually clobbered FCS opponent The Citadel 40-6.

The Tar Heels, led by Shaun Draughn’s 118 yards on the ground, ran over the Bulldogs with 261 yards rushing, the most rushing yards in the Butch Davis era and the most since the Duke game in 2004.

“It didn’t even feel like I had that many yards,” Draughn said after the game.

Backup running  back Ryan Houston added 45 yards on six carries and scored two touchdowns on the ground.  Houston provided tough inside running to complement  Draugn’s speed and appears to have improved his own speed this offseason.

Sturdivant and Carter on Butkus watch list

Jacob Swiger · 22 Aug 2009, 3:04 PM · Comment

Bruce CarterTwo of UNC’s dynamic linebackers — juniors Quan Sturdivant and Bruce Carter — made the cut for the preseason Butkus Award watch list, UNC spokesman Kevin Best said in a release Saturday.

The award is annually presented to the nation’s top linebacker — which just so happens to be UNC’s most talented position.

Carter, a New Bern, N.C., native, recorded 68 tackles, five sacks and an interception in 2008.  He also led the nation with five blocked kicks, including three in a row against UConn.

Sturdivant ranked No. 1 in the nation with 87 solo tackles in 2008.  The Oakboro, N.C., native single-handedly turned around the Notre Dame game when he returned an interception for a touchdown just after intermission and brought the Heels’ defense back into the game after a dismal first half.

Carolina’s other starter at linebacker — sophomore Zach Brown — did not make the list but completes a solid linebacker corps that should be the anchor for an experienced UNC defense.  Brown’s specialty is speed; he clocked a 4.28 40-yard dash during the offseason.

N.C. State’s Nate Irving made the list, too, but will likely miss the entire season unless the Wolfpack makes a January bowl game.

UNC football preseason questions

Jacob Swiger · 11 Aug 2009, 1:29 PM · Comment

UNC started preseason practice Friday, officially beginning the 2009-10 season — the third season under head coach Butch Davis.

Carolina ended last season with an 8-4 record and finished third overall in the Coastal Division with a .500 record in league play.  The Tar Heels enter the season ranked No. 20 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, despite many holes in the offense, a tough schedule and an improved ACC.

Here are a few questions leading up to the first game Sept. 5 against the Citadel.

Will the receivers step up? Frankly, the Tar Heels are probably tired of hearing it, but the loss of one of the nations’ top receiving corps from last season — which included Brooks Foster, Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Tate — leaves the talent level severely depleted. Greg Little is the only player returning with more than 10 receptions.  Little and a slew of freshman and underclassman will have to take the pressure off the rushing game if UNC hopes to move the ball on offense.
