GREENSBORO COLISEUM It’s the final game of the second four-game day at the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament, and this promises to be a good one.
No. 24 Virginia (21-8) is definitely headed for the NCAA Tournament in a couple of weeks, while N.C. State (18-12) seems to be in the “probable” category.
Unfortunately with the way the schedule goes in the 12-team conference they ran into each other only once this season, and the result was a 73-60 Cavalier win in Charlottesville on Jan. 27.
And there will be at least one really interesting personnel matchup. Virginia boasts senior Monica Wright, who was the ACC player of the year, and the Wolfpack has high-energy Marissa Kastanek (pictured), the conference’s rookie of the year.
Kastanek’s team comes out the winner in a loud battle, as the Wolfpack survives 66-59. Continue reading »

Duke junior guard Jasmine Thomas has received the annual Kay Yow Award as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Thomas is currently averaging 15.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.8 steals. She was earlier named a third-team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine.
Thomas is one of four Blue Devils on the squad, which includes grad student Keturah Jackson, senior Bridgette Mitchell and freshman Allison Vernerey.
N.C. State placed two players in senior Brittany Strachan and freshman Marissa Kastanek.
Others named are Boston College senior Ayla Brown and grad student Brittanny Johnson; Maryland freshmen Tianna Hawkins and Diandra Tchatchouang; Virginia Tech senior Lindsay Biggs and freshman Alyssa Fenyn; Florida State junior Christian Hunnicutt; Georgia Tech junior Deja Foster; and Miami freshman Morgan Stroman.

Talk about a balanced effort.
N.C. State didn’t put anyone in double figures, but the Wolfpack upset No. 22 Georgia Tech 54-46 to win its Senior Day women’s basketball game at Reynolds Coliseum.
It was the first win of the season against a ranked team for the Wolfpack (17-13, 7-7 ACC), which earned the No. 6 seed for the ACC Tournament and will take on Clemson in the first round on Thursday night at 8.
Brittany Strachan hit a clinching 3-pointer for the Wolfpack.
Sharnise Beal and Inga Muciniece joined fellow seniors Lucy Ellison and Nikitta Gartrell in the starting lineup for the first time this season for State, which got nine points from Marissa Kastanek (pictured) and eight from Bonae Holston.
Brigitte Ardossi had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Tech (22-8, 8-6), while Alex Montgomery added 11.

JOEL COLISEUM/WINSTON-SALEM Things are coming down to a photo finish for some spots in the ACC women’s basketball race, and a couple of teams that weren’t expected to be contenders are still fighting for a first-round bye in next week’s tournament.
N.C. State and Wake Forest come in to tonight’s tussle with identical 16-11 records, 6-6 in ACC play. The Wolfpack, picked ninth in the preseason media poll, would finish fourth with a win tonight and another in Sunday’s Senior Day game against Georgia Tech and would have an inside track for yes, an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Deacons need to win both of their remaining games, including Sunday’s visit to sub-.500 Clemson, and have Georgia Tech lose twice including Friday night at home to UNC to get the fourth spot themselves.
State beat Wake Jan. 22 at Reynolds Coliseum 51-49 with five points over the final 15 seconds, perhaps the Deacons’ most bitter loss of the season. Wake’s RPI is 100 while the Wolfpack’s is 32, meaning perhaps that the Deacons need four more wins to get an invite to the NCAA instead of the WNIT or the new WBI.
Of course it’s Wake’s Senior Night, but there are lots of Wolfpack fans in the house - perhaps 300 - including a noisy contingent of students that rode up on a pair of buses from Raleigh. The Wolfpack is coming off a Sunday win at UNC and the fans are feeling pretty good about their team.
There are about 2,000 fans in a 14,000-seat arena, but it’s certain to be pretty vocal.
Tonight Wake gets revenge, winning 66-50 to assure itself its best finish in ACC play since 1988.
The Deacons take the lead 12-10 on a Brittany Waters jumper with 10:22 left in the first half and hold it the rest of the way.
Wake is up 24-20 at the break, after a rough 20 minutes during which the Wolfpack shoots 26.7 percent and Wake 33.3.
State pulls to within 45-44 on a Brittany Strachan layup with 4:45 left, but the Deacons dominate the rest of the action.
Secily Ray finishes with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Waters adds 15 points and 10 rebounds for Wake, while Sandra Garcia has a team-high 16 points and Brooke Thomas 11.
Nikitta Gartrell (pictured) has 14 points and Bonae Holston 11 for the Wolfpack. Continue reading »

REYNOLDS COLISEUM/RALEIGH Kellie Harper gets her first test of her ability to coach a big home-court upset for N.C. State tonight.
The opponent is archrival UNC, Sylvia Hatchell’s Tar Heels being the preseason favorites in the ACC and currently ranked No. 14 nationally. And the regional TV cameras are in the house.
Truth be told, the Wolfpack has performed a little better than expected so far while the Tar Heels have hit a couple of unexpected bumps.
UNC has won 17 of the last 19 meetings, although the Wolfpack has more wins against the Tar Heels than anybody and is looking for its 50th victory in the series.
One of the most interesting games in the ACC last season was UNC’s 75-66 win over the Wolfpack in the Smith Center for Hatchell’s 800th victory. The Tar Heels came back stronger in the second meeting, rolling to a 74-57 win. Continue reading »

N.C. State led most of the second half and almost got a big road upset, but one big rebound made the difference.
Monica McNutt followed a missed Sugar Rodgers free throw with 13.7 seconds left, and Brittany Strachan’s jumper at the buzzer was off-target as Georgetown beat the Wolfpack 67-66.
Strachan (pictured) led the Wolfpack (7-5) with a career-high 18 points, while Marissa Kastanek added 15 and Emili Tasler 10.
Rodgers led Georgetown (10-2), which has won nine straight, with 19 points while Jaleesa Butler added 18 and Latia Magee 11.
The Wolfpack’s next game will be at home Monday against Seton Hall.

REYNOLDS COLISEUM/RALEIGH N.C. State plays its final home game before its Christmas break, and the Wolfpack is in need of a win to keep its momentum headed in the right direction.
It’s a “guarantee” game against Big South member Winthrop, and the Wolfpack (6-4) - which hasn’t lost to anybody by more than six points - will be favored.
State has one brand-new player in freshman post Kelsie Lliteras, who took care of some academic concerns in the first semester at Durham Tech and is now ready to go. She’s from Nebraska like freshman guard Marissa Kastanek, and they have played on an AAU team together.
The place is officially in the “holiday spirit,” as the team will pose for group pictures with young fans after the game and there’s a toy collection for underprivileged kids at the door. And all’s well that ends well for the Wolfpack in a 66-53 victory.
The Wolfpack is a little too generous for Harper’s liking in the first half. State leads 30-28 at the break after trailing by as many as seven points in the opening period.
Winthrop actually leads in the second half - at 31-30 on a Jessica Fansler 3-pointer with 19:25 to go.
But the Wolfpack responds with a 9-0 run, including four points from Nikitta Gartrell and four from Brittany Strachan, to get some breathing room.
The lead is comfortable the rest of the way, but it never turns into a blowout. State’s biggest advantage is at 64-49 on a Tia Bell free throw with 1:17 left.
Lliteras gets in late and hits her only shot, a short jumper with 20 seconds left that completes the scoring for the game.
Bonae Holston (pictured) dominates in stretches and finishes with 17 points for the Wolfpack, while Strachan adds 10. Continue reading »

UNC got a solid challenge from St. John’s in women’s basketball, but the Tar Heels were just too strong down the stretch.
Italee Lucas (pictured) scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures as No. 4 UNC held on for an 83-73 win over the previously unbeaten Red Storm at the Smith Center.
In other area games, N.C. State returned to the winning column with a 78-62 victory over visiting Texas Christian, while N.C. Central had a long afternoon in an 85-44 loss at Virginia Tech.
Cetera DeGraffenreid added 16 points for the Tar Heels (6-1), while Tierra Ruffin-Pratt added 13 and Chay Shegog 12.
Da’Shena Stevens’ 25 points led St. John’s, which also got 11 points from Sky Lindsay. Continue reading »

N.C. State got into a deep hole early and tried to climb out of it the rest of the way, but never got out of it in a 77-71 loss to No. 21 Vanderbilt in the championship game of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament.
Tournament MVP Meredith Marsh, who finished with a game-high 21 points, hit three 3-pointers early to help the Commodores (6-0) a 13-0 lead.
Nikitta Gartrell (pictured) scored 15 points for N.C. State (5-2), which had a four-game winning streak snapped. Lucy Ellison - who was named to the all-tourney team - added 14 points and 12 rebounds for her second straight double-double, Bonae Holston 13 points and 12 rebounds and Brittany Strachan 11 points.
Vanderbilt, which got 12 points from Jence Rhoads, hit 28 of 35 free throws.
The Wolfpack’s next game is at home on Thursday night against Wisconsin in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

REYNOLDS COLISEUM/RALEIGH Kellie Harper is quickly into her fourth home game in her short tenure as head coach at N.C. State, and tonight she has an opportunity to reach an early milestone.
The 32-year-old former Western Carolina coach, who comes into the game with a 2-1 record this season, can get her 100th career victory. Not in the realm of the 1,000-plus wins her mentor Pat Summitt has at Tennessee, but how many people have started careers as college or even high school coaches and never gotten to triple figures?
Tonight she’ll be facing an old foe, at least for her. Harper was 6-5 in her tenure at WCU against Southern Conference rival Davidson, which oddly hasn’t played the Wolfpack since 1976. The Wildcats, under former Wolfpack assistant Annette Watts, are 0-2.
And it’s a mismatch from the start, en route to a 79-54 Wolfpack victory.
The Wolfpack leads 3-0, then 10-2, then 41-15 at halftime.
Everything the home team does seems to work pretty well, as State outrebounds the Wildcats 30-11 at the break and shoots 47.1 percent to Davidson’s 24.1. Bonae Holston and Tia Bell are already in double figures at the break. Continue reading »
