CARMICHAEL ARENA/CHAPEL HILL It’s that unique final regular-season game that UNC is playing after the ACC Women’s Tournament for the second straight season.
Today the Tar Heels take on local rival N.C. Central, which like the South Dakota team UNC played in this situation last year is transitioning from Division II and not yet eligible for post-season play.
Last season, the Coyotes put a huge scare into the Tar Heels at the Smith Center before falling 75-69.
This is of course the season finale for the Eagles, who have won 11 of their last 19 games after an 0-9 start. NCCU is 0-4 against the ACC this season, but did fall by only 76-63 on Feb. 22 at Wake Forest.
It’s the third straight season in which they’ve played each other, and the closer of the two games was a 98-45 UNC victory last season in the Smith Center.
All the NCAA bracketologies heading into Monday night’s selection show have the Tar Heels in the 64-team field, but a shocking home-court loss to NCCU would probably send Sylvia Hatchell’s club to the WNIT.
UNC will have to play without freshman center Waltiea Rolle, who is out with a concussion.
It takes them a while to establish control but the Tar Heels avoid that disaster, eventually winning 88-66 in a pretty entertaining contest. Continue reading »

N.C. Central has hit the double-digit win mark for the second straight women’s basketball season.
Joanna Miller (pictured) poured in 27 points, leading three Eagles in double figures in a 74-66 win over Longwood at McDougald-McLendon Gym.
The news wasn’t so good for reeling UNC, as the Tar Heels fell 64-57 to No. 22 Georgia Tech on the road and lost any chance for a bye in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
Blaire Houston added 18 points for NCCU (10-16), while Latoya Bennett chipped in 16 in her final home game as an Eagle.
Brittani Billups led Longwood (8-19) with 16 points while Chelsea Coward added 14.
Georgia Tech 64, UNC 57
Alex Montgomery had 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to lead Georgia Tech (22-7, 8-5 ACC) to the win over the Tar Heels and a split of the two-game season series. Brigitte Ardossi added 18 points for the Yellow Jackets, who clinched a bye in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
Cetera DeGraffenreid had 25 points to lead UNC (5-7, 7-19), but was the only Tar Heel in double figures.

JOEL COLISEUM/WINSTON-SALEM N.C. Central plays its fourth of five women’s basketball games against ACC competition this season tonight, and as always in this situation the Eagles are road underdogs.
Fortunately for the Eagles they’re used to the arena, as they played here many times when Winston-Salem State was a rival in the CIAA and played Wake Forest here last season.
The Deacons (15-11) are looking to bounce back and get ready for the final “weekend” of ACC play, followed by the conference tournament and some certain post-season action to follow.
NCCU (9-15) will have to wait until the year after next for any of that to matter, but need one victory over its final five games to get a second straight season with double-digit wins.
That won’t happen tonight as the Deacons get a big early lead and never quite let the Eagles within striking distance, holding on for a 76-63 victory. Continue reading »

McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM Now it’s N.C. Central’s turn for a “PinkZone” women’s basketball game.
The Eagles have had good fortune in their baby-pink outfits, never having lost a game while wearing them.
Today’s opponent is Chicago State of the (10-16) of the Great West Conference, which has become a holding area for teams in Division I transition as well as a couple whose geographic situation makes it difficult to find any other conference affiliation at all. CSU won the teams’ first meeting 68-47 in the Eagles’ first game in Chicago.
NCCU (8-15) has won eight of its last 14 games and once again seems to be playing its best basketball in February. The Eagles are playing their first home contest after six straight on the road, and with a 5-3 record here are hoping to clinch another winning record on the home floor.
The Eagles get revenge today, using a huge final 10 minutes to win 77-64. Continue reading »

Blaire Houston (pictured) and freshman Joanna Miller scored 15 points each to lead the Eagles (6-11), who have won six of their last eight games including four straight. Latoya Bennett added nine points with 14 rebounds for NCCU, while J’Mia Pollock, who did not score, had 10 rebounds.
Courtney Long had 13 points to lead Savannah State (8-14), which lost its 10th straight game.

McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM It’s just like old times in women’s basketball at N.C. Central.
The Eagles, in the third season of their five-year transition from NCAA Division II to Division I, are hosting their old CIAA rivals from Shaw.
Jacques Curtis’ Bears, ranked No. 23 in the Division II coaches’ poll, are atop the old conference, riding a nine-game winning streak and a 10-1 record. And the 4-11 Eagles are learning to win in Division I, with victories in four of their last six outings.
There’s really no way to tell who’s favored, since the competition the teams have played has been so disparate. In a game that could have been dangerous, Joli Robinson’s club pulls away down the stretch and wins 80-67.
The Eagles lead 39-34 at halftime, getting outshot 48.3 percent to 40.5 but outrebounding the Bears 21-16.
And they look like they’re about to blow it open early in the second, going up 52-41 on Shenise Blanks’ fifth 3-pointer with 14:36 remaining.
But the Bears don’t give up, cutting the margin back to 52-51 on a Tanisha McGaughey 3-pointer with 12:20 to go.
Shaw never takes the lead and the Eagles get better and better down the stretch, eventually winning by 13 points.
Blanks (pictured) hits a career-high 25 points on a career-high seven 3-pointers. Latoya Bennett, the only active Eagle to have played against Shaw before, adds 12 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in three games. Blaire Houston adds a season-high 15 points and Joanna Miller - who has to fight off a box-and-one early on - chips in 10. Continue reading »

McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central coach Joli Robinson never could have guessed she’d have a chance for a major milestone against her alma mater.
But that’s the situation tonight as the Eagles host long-time and former CIAA rival Winston-Salem State.
Robinson, who talked the legendary C.E. “Bighouse” Gaines into starting a women’s basketball program when she was an undergraduate at WSSU, has a chance for her 200th career victory (against 183 losses) if the Eagles can win tonight. All that with a program that had won 35 percent of its games over the 22 seasons before she arrived on campus.
The two schools were rivals in the CIAA for a couple of generations until they both decided to go to NCAA Division I. But now the programs are headed in different directions. They’re not that far apart yet, but the Eagles are better down the stretch and win 67-58.
Two seasons from now, the Eagles will be competing for an MEAC championship and a spot in the NCAA Division I tournament in their first season as full members of Division I. But WSSU has given up that quest, and will be back in the Division II CIAA next season. Continue reading »

McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central starts off the 2010 part of its women’s basketball season by renewing its old rivalry with North Carolina A&T.
At the half, NCCU is down by by three points, but A&T takes a 13-point lead with 11:39 left in the second half.
Central makes a good run at the defending MEAC champions in the last five minutes, but ends up losing 78-74. Continue reading »

McDOUGALD-McLENDON GYM/DURHAM N.C. Central gets an odd sort of test tonight in women’s basketball.
A few hundred home fans are going to find out just how the Eagles recover from the largest margin of defeat in school history.
That was, of course, on Monday at crosstown rival and No. 8 Duke, a 117-28 defeat in a series which is going to continue. The Eagles played that night without freshman leading scorer Joanna Miller, who also leads the team in assists.
Tonight’s opponent provides a more reasonable challenge. It’s former and future MEAC foe South Carolina State (4-6), which topped the visiting Eagles 81-75 in overtime back on Dec. 1. NCCU beat the Bulldogs 72-60 in January in Durham for its only win in the six games of the series.
If the Eagles are still stinging from the loss in West Durham, it certainly isn’t showing when they hit the floor. In fact the overall performance is the very definition of resilience, as they blow out the Bulldogs 84-54 with their best game of the season. Continue reading »
