GREENSBORO COLISEUM It’s finals day at the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament, and for the ninth time in its 11 seasons in Greensboro there are two North Carolina teams in the championship game.

One of two very different stories is going to be written today.

The most likely one is “Third Time’s the Charm!” That means Duke, which is ranked No. 9 nationally and the tournament’s top seed, beats N.C. State and wins for the first time in Joanne P. McCallie’s three straight trips to the final.

The other is “The Glass Slipper fits!” That means first-year Wolfpack coach Kellie Harper takes her outsized, scrappy sixth-seeded team shakes off its 70-39 loss on Feb. 11 at Cameron Indoor Stadium and pulls off a big upset.

Duke gets McCallie her sixth conference tournament title, including one in the Big Ten at Michigan State and four others at Maine, with a 70-60 victory in front of 9,432 fans.

Wolfpack gets past Wright, Virginia to claim spot in ACC semifinals

Mike Potter · 5 Mar 2010, 11:44 PM · Comment

ncsukast1GREENSBORO COLISEUM It’s the final game of the second four-game day at the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament, and this promises to be a good one.

No. 24 Virginia (21-8) is definitely headed for the NCAA Tournament in a couple of weeks, while N.C. State (18-12) seems to be in the “probable” category.

Unfortunately with the way the schedule goes in the 12-team conference they ran into each other only once this season, and the result was a 73-60 Cavalier win in Charlottesville on Jan. 27.

And there will be at least one really interesting personnel matchup. Virginia boasts senior Monica Wright, who was the ACC player of the year, and the Wolfpack has high-energy Marissa Kastanek (pictured), the conference’s rookie of the year.

Kastanek’s team comes out the winner in a loud battle, as the Wolfpack survives 66-59. Continue reading »

Bracket toughens top-seeded Duke’s road to ACC women’s tourney title

Mike Potter · 4 Mar 2010, 12:01 AM · Comment

dukemccaCAMERON INDOOR STADIUM/DURHAM If you look at the ACC women’s basketball season as a whole, it’s hard not to say Duke is a solid favorite to win the conference tournament that starts this morning at Greensboro Coliseum.

The No. 1 seed Blue Devils are ranked No. 6 nationally and finished three games ahead of anybody except Florida State, a team they destroyed 73-43 during the regular season.

But the problem for the Blue Devils is their bracket.

Joanne P. McCallie’s club has a bye today, then will play on Friday at 3 against the winner of today’s 3 p.m. first-round game between UNC and Maryland, the two teams that probably love to beat Duke the most and the two that have combined to win the last five tournaments in Greensboro.

In fact, whichever team that comes out of that group and into the semifinals will be the only team that has ever won the event during its 10-year run in the Gate City.

“That’s OK,” McCallie (pictured) said during a semi-regular press luncheon on Wednesday in the press room at Cameron.  “It’s a little bit strange to see both Maryland and North Carolina in an 8-9 game. If you look at the numbers it’s weird. Why are they in an 8-9 game? Obviously they’re very good teams. But from our standpoint it’s anybody, anyplace, anywhere. So we just get ready to go, kind of thing. Continue reading »

Women’s roundup: Duke at UNC while Wolfpack hosts Georgia Tech

Mike Potter · 28 Feb 2010, 12:01 AM · Comment

mccallieIt’s the final day of ACC women’s basketball before the tournament starts in Greensboro four days from now.

All three Triangle teams are, well, in the Triangle on a very big day for all involved.

It has been a long time since UNC has still been fighting for an NCAA berth in late February, but that’s the case for a Tar Heel team that has lost seven of its last eight games.

The Tar Heels will host No. 6 Duke today at 3 p.m. at Carmichael Arena in a game to be shown live nationally on the Fox Sports cable channels, and an upset of the Blue Devils on Senior Day might be just what Sylvia Hatchell’s club needs to nail down a bid.

That won’t be an easy task, as Duke routed the Tar Heels 79-51 on Feb. 8 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. In its third season under Joanne P. McCallie (pictured), the Blue Devils have already clinched an ACC regular season championship and want to keep making the case for a No. 1 seed going into the NCAA Tournament.

Today will be the final home game before the tournament for Tar Heel seniors Trinity Bursey and Martina Wood.

An hour before that one starts N.C. State, which has been one of the surprises of the ACC in its first season under Kellie Harper, will look for an upset over visiting No. 22 Georgia Tech in the Senior Day game for Nikitta Gartrell, Lucy Ellison, Sharnise Beal and Inga Muciniece.

State’s only home ACC loss this season has been to UNC.

There are six games on today’s ACC slate, and the only seeds already set for the tournament are Duke at No. 1 and Florida State at No. 2. Georgia Tech is also guaranteed a bye into the quarterfinals. Continue reading »

Wolfpack looks to avoid a night of payback at Wake Forest

Mike Potter · 25 Feb 2010, 12:30 AM · Comment

ncsuharpREYNOLDS COLISEUM/RALEIGH If there has been a women’s basketball game this season N.C. State was very lucky to win, it was back on Jan. 22 against Wake Forest.

First-year Wolfpack coach Kellie Harper (pictured) knew it at the time, and went out of her way after the game to say how she could sympathize with what the Deacons might be going through that night.

With 15 seconds left, Nikitta Gartrell hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 49-all. And after the Deacons’ Brooke Thomas missed a shot in the lane, Amber White got the rebound and fired up a rainmaker that went through the hoop at the buzzer for a 51-49 win.

That turned out to be the Wolfpack’s only victory over a one-month span, but the dry spell hardly killed the season. State and Wake are both 16-11 and 6-6 in ACC play, and will play tonight at Joel Coliseum with outright possession of fifth place in the conference on the line.

If the Wolfpack can spoil the Deacons’ Senior Night game tonight and then win its own Senior Day contest on Sunday against Georgia Tech, it will finish fourth in the regular-season standings and earn a bye in the first round of the ACC Tournament beginning March 4 in Greensboro. Continue reading »

Women’s roundup: State-Carolina, Duke-Maryland on tap today

Mike Potter · 20 Feb 2010, 11:46 PM · Comment

unclucas2It’s the penultimate weekend in ACC women’s basketball, and there are two big rivalry games in the Triangle today.

The one that isn’t sold out is on TV.

UNC will host N.C. State for the 90th time in its annual PinkZone game at refurbished Carmichael Arena. Tickets are not available for the 2 p.m. contest, which will be one of two sellouts in the building this season along with Duke’s visit a week from today.

Italee Lucas (pictured) is the Tar Heels’ leading scorer, and poured in a career-high 33 points in their 81-69 victory in the teams’ first meeting Jan. 25 in Raleigh.

First-place Duke, meanwhile, will host heated rival Maryland at 1 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium, looking to move to within one win of clinching the ACC regular-season title. The No. 8 Blue Devils’ game with the Terps will be shown on Fox Sports South. Duke won the teams’ first meeting of the season 58-57 in College Park.

Where anyone else will finish is very much up for grabs. UNC and NCSU are in a four-way tie for sixth in the conference, just one game behind fourth-place Georgia Tech which currently holds the final prospective first-round bye in the conference tournament. Continue reading »

Gartrell, Wolfpack get revenge on BC, gain 15th win of the season

Mike Potter · 19 Feb 2010, 9:52 PM · Comment

ncsugartREYNOLDS COLISEUM/RALEIGH N.C. State needs just one win to assure itself at least a .500 season and a near-certain spot in post-season play.

And tonight the Wolfpack is looking for revenge.

State lost 83-66 at Boston College on Jan. 10, and has dropped three straight in the series. BC is coached by UNC alumna Sylvia Crawley, while coming off the bench is wing guard Ayla Brown whose father Scott is the junior member of the U.S. Senate. Sen. Brown (R-Mass.) is observed on site.

BC still has an outside chance to get a bye in the first round of the ACC Tournament, while the Wolfpack still has a chance to wear white in the first round.

It’s “Pack the House” night with $1 tickets, and the Fox Sports cameras are in the house.

And the Wolfpack gets off to a very, very good start, playing one of its better games of the season in a 73-62 romp.

Boston College never gets the lead.

State scores the first six points on 3-pointers from Marissa Kastanek and Nikitta Gartrell (pictured), bolting to a 14-2 lead on a pair of Gartrell free throws with 13:32 left in the half. Continue reading »

Women’s roundup: State tries to Pack house, Duke visits Ga. Tech

Mike Potter · 19 Feb 2010, 1:01 AM · Comment

ncsuwhit1N.C. State is right on the bubble in women’s basketball.

One more win for Kellie Harper’s team means the Wolfpack will win at least as many games as it loses this season and almost certainly be headed for post-season play.

At least two projected brackets currently have State among the final teams eliminated from NCAA Tournament consideration, so every win is a good win.

Tonight at 6:30, the Wolfpack will host Boston College in a “Pack the House” game at Reynolds Coliseum, with tickets going for just $1. It’s the opener of a cable TV doubleheader in ACC women’s basketball, with No. 8 Duke’s game at No. 19 Georgia Tech the nightcap on Fox Sports.

BC, coached by Sylvia Crawley who played on UNC’s NCAA championship team in 1994, beat the Wolfpack 83-66 on Jan. 10 in Chestnut Hill.

Amber White (pictured) is the Wolfpack’s assist leader.

Duke has won 29 straight meetings with Georgia Tech. A Blue Devil victory tonight would mathematically eliminate Georgia Tech in the race for the top seed in the ACC Tournament, and cut their “magic number” to clinch the top seed to two.

Tonight will be the Yellow Jackets’ PinkZone game. Continue reading »

White, Kastanek pace Wolfpack to ‘Hoops 4 Hope’ win over Miami

Mike Potter · 14 Feb 2010, 9:17 PM · Comment

ncsuwhitREYNOLDS COLISEUM/RALEIGH N.C. State needs some victories to keep alive a shot at a winning season in women’s basketball.

Today, the Wolfpack will have plenty of support in that quest.

The ESPN2 contest against Miami is NCSU’s annual “Hoops 4 Hope” game, with the Wolfpack and most of the fans in the house wearing pink in support of breast cancer awareness and research and of course in memory of the late coach Kay Yow.

It’s a battle for position in the ACC, as State (13-11, 3-6 ACC) and Miami (16-8, 3-6) are tied for ninth place.

State is pretty much dressed in pink from head to toe. Miami, wearing its normal home whites for the road game, is wearing pink shoes and socks with plenty of pink headbands. And 6,452 look on as the Wolfpack gets an emotional 66-64 victory.

Miami leads 35-29 at halftime despite 10 points from Amber White. The Hurricanes shoot 43.8 percent in the first half to State’s 31.0. Continue reading »

Women’s roundup: Duke hits road, State hosts annual “Hoops 4 Hope” game

Mike Potter · 14 Feb 2010, 12:01 AM · Comment

ncsuhols1With the ACC regular-season race starting to wind down, two of the Triangle’s three conference teams will be in action today.

Duke can take another step toward the conference’s regular-season crown on the road today if the No. 8 Blue Devils can complete a season sweep of Virginia Tech. Northern Durham alumna Utahya Drye leads the Hokies in scoring and rebounding.

Meanwhile, N.C. State needs to win two more games to assure itself a .500 season, and gets a tough challenge at home today from Miami in its annual “Hoops 4 Hope” contest to be shown on ESPN.

It will be the only regular-season meeting of the season with the Hurricanes for State, which is led in both scoring and rebounding by Bonae Holston (pictured).

Miami is coached by Duke alumna Katie Meier.

Duke won the first meeting with the Hokies this season, 69-38 on Jan. 21 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Continue reading »
