Dank lil tent outside of Raleigh's Hibernian
The word is that Chapel Hill’s The Love Language and Durham’s The Foreign Exchange have been practicing feverishly (and with many cans of the Bull) this week for tonight’s Red Bull Soundclash, during which both bands will cover songs by their counterpart and offer themed rearrangements of their own material. Reggae The Love Language? Cockrock The Foreign Exchange? That’s the sort of stuff you can expect from two of the Triangle’s best bands at 8 p.m. beside The Hibernian on Glenwood Ave.
“Outside?” you might be asking. “But what about this weather?”
Don’t worry, says Audrey Adair, a communications specialist with Red Bull. Yesterday, the stage crew erected a large tent—the type of thing you’d see at a mid-sized wedding or a South by Southwest day party—around the stages. Adair says the space should hold between 700 and 800 people for the concert, which will go on as planned, despite what’s happening outside of the white plastic walls shown at right. Doors open at 7 p.m. The music starts at 8 p.m. and is set to end around 10:15 p.m. DJ Lord of Public Enemy spins. It’s free, but—given that 412 people have already RSVP’d on Facebook—you had best get there early. And don’t forget Tigallo’s Two Step Thursday across Glenwood after the concert.
Oh, and my prediction as to which band will handle the challenge best? The Foreign Exchange, without apologies.

Merge Records recording artists, The Love Language
With yesterday’s announcement that The Love Language had signed to Durham’s Merge Records, frontman Stu McLamb told the press, “I’ve overdrawn my bank account by $200, my girlfriend dumped me, and my car won’t start. I think this Merge deal could be a real turning point.”
It was said with a tinge of sarcasm—“I hope people do read that and realize that musicians are all broke-ass motherfuckers, no matter how ‘successful’ things can seem,” he now says—but, given that I caught him shortly after he’d finished lunch with the aforementioned ex-girlfriend, things did indeed seem to be looking up for McLamb, and certainly for his band.
“I’d like to celebrate more on this record,” McLamb says. Continue reading »

Well, hey there, little guy.
Troika Music Festival unveiled the first draft of its schedule for its three November days of music in Durham this morning, and it looks like organizers have landed on the most closely curated pool of bands and bills since the festival’s inception in 2002: All told, 71 acts will spread over eight venues (two of which remain unannounced) Nov. 5-7, and no more than four bands will play any venue on any night. In other words, lots of great bands will get ample set times.
Troika 2009 will begin with a centralized outdoor show on Thursday, Nov. 5, featuring the equally but divergent eclectic The Beast and Megafaun. Four sets of four bands then head indoors to four venues—one unannounced, The Pinhook, Duke Coffeehouse and Broad Street Cafe. For a measure of this year’s quality, note that Bowerbirds, Max Indian, Future Islands and The Moaners headline their respective venues. Now there’s a Versus to get excited about. Continue reading »

Aside from a successful Garden show at Duke last week, things have been unexpectedly quiet on The Love Language front of late given the buzz the band’s self-titled debut generated earlier this year. There have been consistent rumors of a significant The Love Language development on the horizon, but, for now, the band’s got some new live action to keep momentum moving. They’ll hit the road for 15 dates with Cursive later this week. The band’s due back in Chapel Hill for a show on August 20 as part of the Locally Grown series. Those dates after the jump. Pull out your planners or your iPhones or however it is you keep track of what you’ll be doing in a few weeks, and jot down the dates of Duke Performance’s Music in the Gardens series. Mixing stand-alone bills featuring area favorites like Eric Bachmann and Dex Romweber with new local lights like The Love Language and Megafaun, the series represents another coup for Duke’s ground-level, plugged-in booking under the leadership of Aaron Greenwald. All shows begin at 7 p.m. in or around the Duke Gardens, and each shows cost $10 for the public and $5 for Duke employees. Duke students and children under 12 get in for free. A rad series for the right price.

The Love Language back at home (Photo: Mike Triplett)
“This is the center of the universe—well, our universe,” said Josh Moore, a folk singer-songwriter from Carrboro, his face was glowing with child-like excitement. Moore caught a ride to Texas with Wilmington band He Is Legend. He isn’t in Austin to play his own music, but rather to absorb everything else that’s here. As we sat on the pavement together, we listened to The Love Language run through a quick soundcheck. I thought about all the North Carolina bands who are at SXSW this year. North Carolina—in particular the Triangle of Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh—sent several dozen bands to Austin to play both official showcase sets and house parties and art gallery shindigs.
