Future Islands, at rest, rarely

Future Islands, at rest, rarely

It often seems like we’re trying to find new ways to describe Future Island’s infectious music—essentially, three-piece, bass-and-beat driven emo-soul from dudes that (partially) grew up in Raleigh, moved to Greenville, N.C., and then Baltimore, Md.—on a weekly basis. And it’s sort of true: The trio tours as hard as frontman Sam Herring sings, and they don’t miss a chance to play in the Triangle. Last week, the band played a packed headlining set at Berkeley Cafe; tonight, they’ll play Pizza Fest at The Cave. More on that event in this week’s paper. We spoke with Future Islands’ smoking bassist (like, literally: dude smokes while he plays) William Cashion last week about the band’s new deal with Thrill Jockey Records, one of the finest labels in the land. Tonight: Sinful Savage Tigers get acoustic at The Cave

Sinful Savage Tigers

Sinful Savage Tigers

With a name like Sinful Savage Tigers, you half expect cookie monster vocals, thundering breakdowns and a machine gun hardcore backbeat. But the Chapel Hill trio is a string band wedded to contemporary rock/pop sensibilities. In May, they released their debut, Rain is the Soup of the Dogs in Heaven. Their origins go back a lot further—to Seth Martin’s undergrad years at Sewanee College in Tennessee. It’s there that he met Rob Guthrie, his collaborator on the project’s songs.

“He started playing guitar in college,” says Martin. “I heard him down the hall, playing nothing but Dave Matthews covers. I went into the room and told him to knock it off. Or learn some Who or some GBV.”

They would eventually collaborate, but only when Guthrie gave Martin a call several years later. In the interim, Martin had moved to the Triangle with the loose intent to get hooked up with “an angular indie rock act.” But the opportunity never materialized, and after a few tours of the local open-mic venues, he became more dedicated to his graduate studies at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in English. Last Spring, Guthrie asked Martin if he’d come down and help him fill out a couple hours at a big music and arts festival where he lives. He wanted to perform as a duo and pad out the set with some of Martin’s own tunes, just rearranged in a string-band style. Continue reading »

Rumor: Mansion 462 closing?

Mansion in the Hill

Mansion in the Hill

While reporting this week’s story on the conversion of Chapel Hill dance hall Players to a part-time rock club, we heard whispers from a few folks that Mansion 462—the West Franklin Street room that opened last January between Chapel Hill anchors Local 506 and The Cave—was closing. Apparently, several bands had been emailing other area clubs to reschedule dates dropped from Mansion 462’s calendar. Co-owner Brad Waycaster confirms that the club did drop several shows, but he says Mansion 462 isn’t going anywhere. Continue reading »

Pipe announces Merge warm-up show: 07.17 at The Cave

Pipe!

Pipe!

Before Pipe plays the first, second, third or fourth night of Merge’s 20th birthday party (Merge isn’t announcing which bands play which night, an awkward strategy for a sold-out festival … that said, Merge, after 20 years, obviously knows what it’s doing), it will go underground. Pipe (MRG037, 054, 055, 123, for those of you keeping track at home) will play The Cave with Durham’s Tin Star. If you’re wondering how the two divergent bands fit together on this bill, Kevin Bacon would remind you that Ron Liberti is in Pipe and Bringerer. Tin Star drummer Barton Moyers is in Bringerer, too. Bam! The Friday, July 17, show starts at 10 p.m.

Fractured Discs will release Tin Star’s debut EP, Bettie Lane, in late July. The band will play an early CD release party Friday, July 3, at The Pinhook with Gray Young and Birds & Arrows. And, then, there’s the Pipe show… Continue reading »
