The Belleville Outfit and Casey Driessen
When it comes to music festivals, I’m a dabbler. Barring a few must-see acts, I tend to wander from stage to stage to try to catch bits of as many bands as possible, hoping to stumble across a surprise or two. At many festivals, that approach can be exhausting, making it easy to spend more time rushing off to see the next band than being able to get a true feel for the performers.
But thanks to generous set lengths and the close proximity of stages and tents, Shakori Hills is a sampler’s paradise. During my 13 hours at the festival, I was able to catch parts of 22 acts with enough time to actually relax and enjoy the music. I even managed a couple of cat naps. Hit the jump for minute-by-minute impressions.

The Fall edition of Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival in Silk Hope is set for Oct. 8-11, a little less than two months away. This morning, festival organizers announced the first 27 acts of this season’s celebration. The big names so far are the usual suspects—The Duhks, The Gourds, festival founders Donna the Buffalo. Among the most exciting acts in this initial batch, though, are young locals stretching beyond Shakori’s Hills Americana roots—eclectic hip-hoppers The Beast, melancholy Trekky kids Butterflies, the steamy soul of the Howie Dewitt Band—and national acts like The Belleville Outfit and Casey Driessen & the Colorfools, both of which never met a genre they couldn’t integrate. Also notable: Chatham County Lines, Christabel and the Jons, Midtown Dickens, Mosadi Music and new band Good-Timin’-Campin’ Hackney Farm Family Band Super Groove Ritual Joint.

Guided by Juno? To Corcoran!
The Mountain Goats, going it solo with just John Darnielle and a guitar and maybe a piano, will join The Beast, Language Arts and a score of other local hip-hop and spoken word artists Friday, Aug. 21, at CCB Plaza (201 N. Corcoran St.) for the second annual Durham Be Easy celebration. DBE “encourages fun, togetherness, understanding, and celebration within the community. This annual event brings all walks of life together in the heart of downtown Durham to enjoy arts entertainment,” according to its mission statement. The free event runs from 6-10 p.m., and, in the event of rain, will head into the Durham Armory.
4AD is giving away “Genesis 3:23″—a tune from Darnielle’s new album, The Life of the World to Come, due on 4AD on October 6—here.

Less than a week after The Rosebuds and Lost in the Trees played Golden Belt to raise funds for Durham Arts Council, another enclave of popular local musicians has announced its own fundraiser for the grant-, class- and space-providing nonprofit: Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon (who received a DAC grant in 1990 and has long supported the organization in return) will record a short session with The Beast—the eclectic hip-hop band fronted by her son, Pierce Freelon—Thursday, May 21, at the new Sound Pure Studios in Durham. The band and the singer will attempt to demystify the recording process in a panel with Sound Pure founder Todd Atlas, and dinner and wine donated by the nearby Piedmont will be served. Only 25 tickets will be sold for the intimate session. They’re available for $100 each through DAC. All things considered, not a bad deal.

Viking Storm, pt. II (Hammer No More The Fingers, The Future Kings of Nowhere, The Dry Heathens, Deleted Scenes, The Beast)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham
Saturday, April 4
Hammer No More The Fingers could have been upstaged.

There was the matter of the 16-foot Viking warship—resting across the Duke Coffeehouse stage, adorned with shields representing each of the nine bands that comprised the Viking Storm lineup. Then there were the Future Kings of Nowhere, resurrected as a team of lanky (Minnesota) Vikings, purple jerseys and crisp white football pants included. And, of course, a Final Four victory for the Tar Heels.
But the night, as expected, belonged to Hammer. And the standard for album releases in the Triangle, as expected, was raised.
