Red Collar: Distribution deal, red vinyl, Troika video

"It's so very red," said Collar via Twitter.

"It's so very red," said Collar via Twitter.

For Durham’s Red Collar, self-releasing its first full-length album, Pilgrim, in February was an impetus to take the show on the road and make a full-time go of rock ’n’ roll. The CDs were pressed and packaged, a publicity campaign was implemented and dates were booked. The band members packed into “Vandrew Blass,” the vehicle named for former keyboardist Andrew Blass. And, so far, it’s been paying off: The band picked up favorable reviews and college radio airtime nationwide and earned a slot at the recent CMJ Music Marathon in New York.

But Pilgrim, save for local consignment, wasn’t in stores. “One of the big problems with not having a label is not having physical distribution,” says guitarist Mike Jackson. That, though, is no longer a problem. Suburban Home Records and brother company Vinyl Collective picked up Pilgrim for distribution starting Dec. 1. The distribution deal coincides with a re-issue of Pilgrim as a limited-edition LP, pressed in a batch of 500 by Loose Charm Records.

The vinyl version is different than the CD, as the band shifted and pruned the track order. “It was harder than we thought,” says Jackson. “We had to cut some of the songs … We just couldn’t fit the album onto one LP and still have it sound good.”

“Stay” and “Hands Up,” which also appeared on Red Collar’s Hands Up EP, didn’t make the cut. They remain, though, on the LP’s digital component, a download card featuring all 11 tracks from the original CD version, plus an acoustic cover of Jawbreaker’s “Jinx Removing.”

Plus, vinyl has its own rewards: “There’s something more physical and immediate about having the record,” Jackson says. “CDs almost seem disposable at this point.”

Steve-O, on the mic

Steve-O, on the mic

2008 Indies Arts Award winner Steve “DJ Steve-O” Salevan will return to radio with a new show, The Hidden Places, Friday on Internet radio station, Taintradio, which I have yet to type without giggling. Salevan, a former WKNC 88.1 FM DJ, will co-host the show with Rachael Oehring, a Chapel Hill-based music publicist and, along with Salevan and Independent Weekly contributors Bryan Reed and Allie Mullin, co-owner of label Neckbeard Records.

The mixed-format show will air weekly on Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. and will combine local tunes with chats with musicians, fans and enthusiasts across the state. This Friday’s pre-recorded premiere episode includes Pox World Empire kingpins Zeno Gill and Maria Albani, as well as Bull City’s Jim Brantley, discussing, as Salevan says, “what it’s like to be someone in a band around here, what it’s like to start a group, and the culture of the Triangle.” Continue reading »

Live: American Aquarium loves you motherfuckers

Spencer Griffith · 30 Apr 2009, 10:54 AM · 1 Comment

American Aquarium, Red Collar, Holy Ghost Tent Revival
The Pour House, Raleigh
Saturday, April 25

Last Saturday night, Raleigh road warriors American Aquarium showcased Dances for the Lonely, its latest batch of tunes inspired by frontman BJ Barham’s cross-country adventures with his band—and, of course, his women. Heavy on the new stuff, Barham spent the first half of the 80 minute set relating those out-of-town tales to the local crowd (which he—err, affectionately—referred to as “motherfuckers”) by describing the New Orleans enchantress who’s the subject of “Louisiana Beauty Queen,” discussing the “Queen of the Scene” (“a girl who thought she was too fucking cool for everyone”) or calling out the high school friend whose white ride is mentioned in “PBR Promenade.” Introducing the soaring album opener “Katherine Belle,” Barham explained, “If you’ve ever been to Columbia, South Carolina, you know there’s not anything there except for beer and women, and I happen to enjoy both.” In one of the highlights of the night, Caitlin Cary made her way from behind the bar to the stage to lend her pipes to the song, as she does on the album. Hit the jump for the video and more words on American Aquarium and the rest of the bill.

Live: Red Collar gets on the road

Red Collar Road Work Ahead

Road work? One year's worth, in this case

The silver spraypainted Red Collar sign outside Triangle Brewing Company’s Durham warehouse space Saturday night read, “Road Work Ahead.” Maybe it was the only large piece of reflective orange metal they had lying around on Pearl Street, but it was entirely appropriate. Following the hometown release show for Pilgrim, Red Collar, finally, was hitting the road full-time. Or, as frontman Jason Kutchma referred to it during the album’s title cut, going home.

Hammer No More & Red Collar announce release extravaganzas (also, exclusive Hammer download here)

Grayson Currin · 2 Mar 2009, 9:22 PM · 2 Comments

After both bands made much ado about the upcoming announcements for their respective release shows for their new records, I wondered aloud when Red Collar and Hammer No More the Fingers would come loose on the details behind the dates. They’ve finally let the information slip, and you should start saving the dates.
