The player has expired, but listen to some of Horror Vacui here.
Per our review of I Was Totally Destroying It’s second album, Horror Vacui, and our feature about the band in this week’s newspaper, it’s safe to assume that we’re pretty into IWTDI’s work of late (which, we know, might shock some). Trouble is, you can’t pick the record, released via Portland label Greyday Records, in stores until Tuesday. After the jump, though, you’ll find the whole thing streaming—at least until the band’s CD release show at Cat’s Cradle Saturday, Oct. 10, at 8:30 p.m.

But, wait, I thought these dudes loved playing in the rain?
Per expectations of nature’s wrath, and via WKNC’s blog, tomorrow’s split bill with Luego and I Was Totally Destroying It on N.C. State’s campus has been moved to The Wolves Den in Talley Student Center. The show is still at 6 p.m., the jams are still free and open to the public, and I Was Totally Destroying It will still make you feel like you just slammed a sixer of Sparks with your ears. Pull-quote it.

Sure, there are plenty of great shows you could catch around the Triangle tonight, but none deserve your attendance more than a five-deep bill of top-notch local indie rock at Tir Na Nog. It’s more than just another great line-up trotted out by the downtown Raleigh pub that has become known for its weekly Local Band-Local Beer series: all proceeds from the $5 cover charge—totally a bargain for this stacked roster—benefit HopeLine of North Carolina, a twenty-four hour crisis line that fields calls on suicide, child abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault and substance abuse, amongst other issues. The non-profit also lends an ear to teenagers through a round-the-clock hotline and makes daily check-in calls to senior citizens who live alone.
Tir Na Nog’s Chris Tamplin explains the non-profit’s urgent need for funds: “Hopeline relies on public funding as well as private donations, and with the economy the way it is, a lot of people aren’t opening up their wallets to charities.” Tamplin added that Hopeline representatives will be in attendance to provide information about the organization’s programs, answer questions, and collect donations above and beyond the five-spot collected at the door. “Hopeline really needs the help. They’ve been around since 1970, and to lose an organization like this would be devastating to our community.”
Even if it wasn’t a benefit, this event would still deserve your attention. In the second spot, bouncy pro-pop/anti-folk scene leaders The Future Kings of Nowhere plays its last full-band show in the area before frontman Shayne O’Neill moves to New York City. They’re bookended by a pair of indie pop sets: synth-centric Terpsikhore noobs On Photon bats leadoff at 9:30 p.m., while Chapel Hill’s power-pop princes (and princess) I Was Totally Destroying It follows the Future Kings. Durham’s Hammer No More The Fingers are in the penultimate slot, pulverizing its pogo rhythms with power trio crunch, while Lonnie Walker wraps the night up, blending ramshackle Americana with raring indie rock.

Two weeks after being dropped by new local label Neckbeard Records, Triangle hard-pop quintet I Was Totally Destroying It has now signed to excellent Portland imprint Greyday Records. The label—responsible for releases from Head of Femur, Southerly, Mayday and a dozen others—will release the band’s “double EP,” The Beached Margin/Done Waiting, on 12-inch vinyl on August 11. Printed in a limited edition of 250, each copy of the 11-track curio will include a digital download code for the entire EP and an exclusive digital bonus track. This EP was originally slated for CD-R release on Neckbeard in a similarly limited edition. The band’s second album, Horror Vacui, will chase the EP’s heels, as it’s due on Greyday October 13 on CD and through the expected digital outlets.
That’s not the only bit of news today for IWTDI: The band confirms its show Friday, May 22, at Local 506. Though the show remains a launch party for Neckbeard, IWTDI will play “because we want to share the stage with Lemming Malloy and Gray Young—not because we support or agree with the recent decisions or business practices of Neckbeard Records.”
“We’re all happy over here for IWTDI regarding their recent signing to Greyday,” says Neckbeard co-founder Steve Salevan, “and we’re looking forward to purchasing their new album as fans. We wish them the best in their future endeavors.”
Lemming Malloy will release its debut LP, The Return of the Norfolk Regiment, that night. It will be the first release for Neckeard, which—in full disclosure mode—is a new joint co-presented by longtime Independent Weekly contributor Bryan Reed.
