Annuals' Adam Baker, recording Hear Here: The Triangle at Flying Tiger Sound.
On Saturday, Aug. 29, Annuals, The Never, Hammer No More the Fingers and Birds of Avalon will play Cat’s Cradle to celebrate the release of Hear Here: The Triangle, a 17-track compilation featuring loads of new songs (and a few old cuts) from several of the Triangle’s best bands: The Rosebuds, Lonnie Walker, The Love Language, Birds of Avalon, The Kingsbury Manx and many more. A copy of the compilation—a joint production between Flying Tiger Sound, Terpsikhore Records and 88.1 WKNC FM—is included for $10 admission at the 8:30 p.m. Cradle show.
And it’s totally worth it, if for nothing more than the best Lonnie Walker song yet (”Feels Like Right,” which opens the disc) and the funniest The Rosebuds song yet (”Brad Cook Is Not Your Man,” which closes the disc). A promotional video for Hear Here has been making the rounds, and it includes “Flesh and Blood,” a Johnny Cash cover by Annuals that didn’t make the final cut due to licensing rights. The video approved tracklisting will be waiting after the jump. Continue reading »

Tight bros, way back when...
If you’re getting your Triangle music news from Raleigh Downtowner, who reviewed the Dynamite Brothers‘ rockin lil’ debut last November, or five years after its release (Hey man, those Hendrix comparisons have to sit a minute…), the second record from the Chapel Hill boys may not seem long overdue. But it’s been 2003 since the band gave us new material, and via the new Breakfast in Bed…with the Dynamite Brothers, it seems that they’ve taken their time to make it right, at least. Recorded in pieces by Hobex’s Greg Humphreys, The Old Ceremony’s Mark Simonsen and Dynamite bassist Shane Hartman, the 13-track affair features a small army of guests with the trio, from Humphreys and Taz Halloween to Hercules Europe Brass and emcee Juan Huevos (!). An early mix of one track, “In Time,” recently played over the closing credits of the first episode of HBO’s Eastbound and Down. “Neighborhood Pharmacist” and instrumental “Metered” also made the show recently.
“We wanted to create an album that tried to capture the way we play together live while at the same time exploring our deep affinity for classic soul, R & B, funk and rock. I would like to think we were looking hard at Funkadelic, the Upsetters, Marvin Gaye, Dr. John and the Chambers Brothers for some signs during the making of this album,” says drummer and singer Scott Nurkin, who’s also been busy behind the kit for Birds of Avalon. “The album tells somewhat of a story from beginning to end. A lot of these songs are based on things that actually happened on tour and characters we met along the way.”
The not-yet-mastered record has no firm release date or label, but it does have a tracklist. Continue reading »

Double Negative, Birds of Avalon, Whatever Brains, The Plague
A House, Raleigh
Saturday, Jan. 21
“We are The Plague,” exclaimed Hank Williams, the long-time Raleigh concert promoter, nearly breathless after the premiere of his new band, The Plague, “and you’re dead.” He was almost right: Saturday’s show at a house somewhere in Raleigh was a sardines-and-sweat affair, crowding revolving-door groups of a few hundred into a living room and in a stairwell to see three of the city’s best bands—Whatever Brains, Double Negative and Birds of Avalon—and one of its newest, The Plague. The steam within the tiny living room was nearly asphyxiating. People slid off of one another and into the floor, only to be lifted high above the pit to crowd surf and bump into Christmas lights. Between the short sets, the masses spilled out of the front and back entrances, smoking, sweating and steeling themselves with the cool February air in preparation for the next round. A perfect night. [Photos by D.L. Anderson]
