Are Annuals going to blow up?
So, what do you think of Annuals? Be He Me, the debut from Raleigh’s Ace Fu-approved sextet Annuals, is finally starting to circulate in finished form, and it may be just a matter of time before things get crazy for these kids, all of whom first made their mark in other Triangle bands like Sedona and Timothy’s Weekend. Most of them went to Enloe High School, and now they’re going on tour with other buzz racketeers like Tapes ‘N Tapes and Art Brut.
More than two months before the release of the album, both Pitchfork and Spin raved: Pitchfork added opening cut “Brother” to their Infinite Mixtape, warning “we could be writing about these dudes all year,” while Spin raved about the band in its “Hey, This is Awesome!” column. Now, they’re in the coveted iTunes “Indie Spotlight” (What would CNN say?).
Be He Me seems more like a string of a few singles to me, but those—including the fantastic “Brother”—are enough to catapult it into some sort of memorable territory. For a full review, see next week’s Independent.
