Bonnie Raitt

This from Grant Britt:
Bonnie Raitt – Memorial Hall UNC Wednesday December 7, 05. $75- sold out show-
Raitt Still Rockin’
Her new album, Souls Alike, is missing her trademark slithery whomp—it’s downright melancholy. But Bonnie Raitt managed to stir things up with a mix of old and new material at her sold-out concert Wednesday night at UNC’s Memorial Hall. She dedicated some of the new stuff to family. Her hit single “I Will Not Be Broken” went out to her ailing older brother, whose brain cancer is now in remission. “Nick Of Time “ was for her parents, who passed away this year. But it wasn’t all sad and blue. Raitt got rockin’ with the T’Birds’ “I Believe I’m In Love With You,” and tore up the joint with keyboardist Jon Cleary singing Delbert McClinton’s part on “Good Man, Good Woman.”
Raitt waited until the third song into her encore to bring out former guitarist Will McFarlane to do a very un-ministerial version of Sam and Dave’s “I Thank You.” Raitt’s undiminished vocal skills, stellar guitar technique and magnificent back-up band made it all seem effortless- a smooth, two and a half-hour glide, courtesy of the queen of slide guitar.

After one record on Plastique Recordings and two on Yep Roc, The Comas have signed to Vagrant Records. Wow. That puts them right up there with Saves the Day, Hot Rod Circuit, The Get-Up Kids, Dashboard Confessional and The Alkaline Trio. I suppose you could take heart in the fact that Eels and Paul Westerberg also call Vagrant home—that is, if that kind of thing helps you sleep. Now, perhaps they can buy back the gear they reported stolen in Brooklyn several weeks ago. If you want to see what Vagrant has to say, click away. (more…)

Durham Carolers

Audio is up for the Durham Carolers. This goes in the collection on our new Music & More page.

In the Spirit: The Durham Carolers
durham carolers

Since 1935, the Durham Carolers have shared their distinct sound—part a cappella harmony, part gospel—with families in Durham. In the beginning, the group went caroling on Christmas Eve in different neighborhoods across town. Over the years, the performances have moved inside the homes and the members have changed, but the sound—the spirit, really—has not.

Read Mosi Secret’s story on the Carolers, a Durham tradition since the 1930s, and view Derek Anderson’s photo essay in this week’s paper or online at www.indyweek.com.

All tracks recorded at a recent reheasal at Bell-Yeager Free Will Baptist Church in Durham by Kirk Ross using an Edirol R-1.
