BTB and now Dana? Good times!

You just can’t keep a good blogger down, apparently. Last week, it was the return of Lunsford Lane (who’s got another great post up, btw). Today comes word that Dana McCall, of dental as well as Raleighing.com fame, has returned to the fray with his new gogoraleigh.com. I’ll say this for him — nobody likes a tall building better than our old friend Dana.

Hey, thanks! I lost my father in March and have been really wrapped up with moving my mother/yard sale/estate blah blah. That coupled with some changes I needed to make at work made 2007 a very trying year. I’m excited to have time to do this :)

Now, I don’t think ALL tall buildings are great. I honestly wish that the West condo building were smaller. About 15 months ago I counted about 144 spaces in downtown on which a Wachovia building-sized tower could go. I think we need to concentrate on getting more 4-6 story density before we occupy ourselves with going for 40 and whatnot.

The big roadblock ahead, though, is that brick and mortar retail nationally is choking on a big fat piece of steak called the internet. Stores that are not big boxes or don’t have some intense local appeal are going to start withering on the vine.

I’m afraid that the dream of much true retail in downtown Raleigh is a bit of a pipe dream. It’s going to take an updated paradigm to get downtown to be a convenient place to reside. (thinking….thinking…thinking…) Oh we’ll figure something out!

Dana — I think it was Janet Cowell who said, when she was on Council, that every 40-story building is 10 4-story buildings you don’t get. At some point in the distant future, Raleigh will be built-out with (hopefully) 4-6 story buildings; at that point, any replacements will necessarily (because of the economics of teardowns) have to be much taller. But as you say, we are nowhere near that point today. Where we’re at now, I’d say, is a slumping market where we’ve approved too many oversized towers, and they’re crowding each other out, not to mention all the potential 4-6 buildings that might’ve happened otherwise.

But as you say, we’ll figure something out! Give downtown Raleigh some transit and some curb appeal (Blount Street, e.g.) and I think retail can take hold in time. gogoraleigh indeed.
