La Traviata. Sunday. Our “Underdog Opera” Triumphs!

Our underdog opera was a smash hit last night. I’m not an opera critic, buff or anything — before last night, I’d never been to an opera. But after writing about Raleigh’s Capital Opera company in the Indy this week, I had to see La Traviata for myself, if for no other reason than to be sure I hadn’t exaggerated by comparing it to Hoosiers (the underdog basketball story).
Conclusion: Hoosiers and then some. I mean, I’m not going to say this was great. The Metropolitan Opera (I imagine) is great. But for a small opera company operating on a shoestring budget whose purpose is to nurture local talent and young stars, this was better than great. It was inspired. You have one more chance to see it: La Traviata is at Fletcher Opera Theater in the Progress Energy Center downtown, 2 pm Sunday. Tickets are $25, $20 for seniors & students. You will not regret it, even if — especially if — you’re no opera buff at all. For tickets: Capital Opera. Or get there early, buy at the box office, and listen to Assad Meymandi’s pre-show talk, starting at 1 pm.

Bravo! And thanks to ‘Citizen’ for highlighting it for this opera novice. I hope others will also send them a contribution so we can keep them around.
