Spark Con starts tomorrow

The theory behind all the “creative class” buzz is pretty simple, really (and not all that new). It is that a billion Chinese, Indian and other emerging nations’ workers are ready to carry out the world’s economic plans — whether they be for making products or providing services — and to do so at low, low labor rates. So if Americans, Euros and others on the planet who’ve grown accustomed to a rather higher standard of living are going to maintain it for very much longer, we’d better all put our thinking caps on and “create” something. Create a new product, or a better version of an old one. Create a new process for making something better, or faster. Create a new way of providing services, or create a new service. Create art, music, learning — the things that will command a premium price in a richer, better-developed world. In short, think. Think of something you alone can do, or else think of something others can do in mass amounts at your direction.
So now apply all that theory to the place we live. How can we make the Triangle — already doing pretty well creativity-wise — even sharper, quicker, and THE place that THE most creative people will want to be? (Or think of it another way — THE place that helps get the most creativity possibility out of everybody who lives here.)
That’s what the Spark Con conference this weekend is about.
Workshops. Events. A whole bunch of ‘em, in and around downtown Raleigh, and centered on Exploris and Moore Square. Check out the schedule, starting Thursday night, and all day Friday and Saturday, ending Sunday. There’s music, art, film, fashion, and the all-important etcetera too.
If you want to see creative folks at work and play (same thing?), and/or throw your own creative notions on the fire to help “ignite the Creative Hub of the South,” there’s something on that schedule for you.
